I saw Funny Girl with my mom in 1968. I was 14 years old, and when the camera focused on Omar Sharif in the audience watching Barbra Streisand on stage, I was smitten. His beautiful eyes, dark and piercing would mesmerize me for the rest of my life. I never saw Lawrence of Arabia until last year, and even now when I watch it, I can feel my legs just turn to butter when he is on screen. I grew to love his story telling, his intelligence, appreciation that he could speak 5 languages, and eventually that gorgeous head of silver hair. He was a very classy gentleman, and I cried when he passed on.

I saw Dr. Zhivago when I was 15 years old. I was so impressed I brought my mother to see the film. We both fell in love with Omar Sharif. Those hypnotic enchanting warm dark eyes have always captivated me. I would follow him anywhere at the sound of his voice. Omar Sharif was the greatest storyteller. I loved Dr. Zhivago so much from the age of 15 until now that I stopped counting after seeing the movie 25 times and I own it too.
I kept a wonderful scrapbook of Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. My best friend named my goddaughter Lara. 😇🥰💝

Although Lawrence and Dr Zhivago were 1960's films, they were very much of the 50's "epic" genre but having said that, you could easily argue that they were 2 of the most influential and important film of the decade. They were certainly Sharif's best films and set him up for a career. What a great actor

He really was a charming man. He was very intelligent and a sensitive actor. He also did not have a need to be caught up in the Hollywood actor lifestyle. He did what brought him pleasure for himself, not for anyone else or fame. Not like talentless actors and semi famous nobodys nowadays. He acted because it brought him pleasure, he gambled because it brought him pleasure, and bred horses because it brought him pleasure...simple. He didn't need to impress anyone. He was humble, very likable and honest. And......dead gorgeous!!

@@diane4537 it's a beautiful love story if you like that. It was written in communist Russia by a man named Pasternak. He stayed in Russia because he was fortunate. Stalin liked his book even though it showed the worst of the Russian Revolution. He started writing it and then he wrote for the woman he loved The beautiful Julie Christie was in as Zhivago's who committed adultery with. Charlie Chaplin's daughter played his wife. Even though he committed adultery the movie made you like him because of the different things that happened during the revolution. One of my favourite actors, Alec Guinness and another one Rod Stieger along with Tom Courtney. Rod was in the movie, "In the Heat of the Night" movie. He was the sheriff who resembled Carol o'Connor. Most Europeans speak several languages, often 4 or 5 quite fluently, but it is "useful" language, not a literal type of learning, and many speak a language but do not write it. Learning phrases in many languages to get what you want, and where you wish to go or eat is fairly easy. But to really KNOW a language takes far more skill. But Sharif is a brilliant guy, so I'd never doubt his abilities at anything!

Sharif did well in 'Dr. Zhivago' in spite of being concerned at Lean's lack of detailed direction for him. Played the naivety and sympathetic nature of the character so well, that it didn't matter that he obviously wasn't Russian. He seemed right in the part, even physically.

Omar Sharif was from one of Egypt's wealthiest families, wealthy even by Western standards. His mother was a personal friend of the King of Egypt. He was not new to money, cameras or status when he went to work in Hollywood. This is why he seemed to be "playing" rather than working most of the time. As talented as he was, he was a born playboy.

He was a terrific actor. Great sense of humor. I will never comprehend what women found in him, he wasn’t ugly, but he wasn’t that handsome. Very articular. Impecable way of expressing himself.

Omar Sharif's sense of humor was very much like the Italian sense of humor of his generation. Maybe because his generation was greatly influenced by the Italian movies & culture, especially by the great Italian directors Rossellini, Fellini, De Sica, etc.
