Generally the rifle is canted (tilted) to bring the sight to the shooter’s eye instead of tilting the head to align the eye to the sight if the rifle is held vertically. Having the rifle vertically aligned is considered optimal but depending on the shooters anatomy this may not be possible to do without tilting the head to see through the sights. Tilting the head can cause issues with balance and increase the size of the “hold” so a compromise has to be found.
