thank you, looking for my Grandparents cafe on corner of Mere Street and Well Street, closed 1970ish. Run by Joseph Dormer. great pics.
I want to thank you for your Hackney videos , me and my mum have enjoyed them so much , they bring back so many memories . I feel so homesick for times gone by when I see some of them too . Much appreciated . All the best , Sarah .
Thank you too! Glad you and your Mum enjoyed them that is all we have left now are our memories as most have been pulled down and gone forever
One thing I thought was really strange. After Gibbons closed, well, closed, as in the original owners of the store left, another shop was opened in the same place but they didn't last very long.
There was some sort of a fire or an explosion that destroyed the building. I bought a couple of chairs in that new shop on separate occasions. The chairs were OK but the way the new owners ran that shop seemed a bit iffy to me and they weren't very friendly at all.
Then, oddly, they got a couple of their carpet fitters to deliver the second chair to me which was ridiculous. They weren't proper delivery men at all and one of them was in a terrible mood, moaning at me "We're carpet fitters mate, we're not supposed to be doing this"...blah blah blah.
They were having trouble getting the last chair through my door and he said "Oh, I am fed up with this, now look mate, it's not fitting,, you're gonna have to break your door down to get this in". I pointed out to him that the first one was exactly the same size and that went in. They got in eventually and then he left in a huff.
I don't know what was going on in that place but I didn't buy anything else from them after that experience and then just a few weeks later, I heard a fire destroyed the building. Make of that what you will but I reckon something very funny was going on there. Thanks.
Thanks for the memories
how Beautiful it was....
great mate

Will always be a Hackney girl in my heart. It has changed so much.. regeneration and the people who came with the ‘uplift’ have erased the community spirit. I visit and walk around maybe once a year and take as many pics of things that remain the same which unfortunately is not a lot.
GREAT MEMORIES OF HACKNEY BUT SOMETIMES THE SIZE OF THE TEXT OBSCURES THE PHOTOS

Your descriptions are obscuring some of the photographic details
These photos are ruined by the way the writing is imposed across the photo either on purpose or perhaps incompetence I suspect the latter!.
