I think you could have shown Alex a better example of Syd's better songs. Flaming, bike, astonomie domine jugband blues etc. This song is good but Syd's lyrics are epic.

There are a few theories on why Syd went crazy. He was already a gentle, fragile person before all the drugs. Family, friends, and band members believe he already had some kind of mental illness, and when he overdid the drugs, it acted ad an accelerant, or catalyst. It did something to him that he never recovered from. On top of that, they also say that Syd was never truly into the popular music scene. He wanted to start a band and play music, but once they took off and were getting pressure from the label for "hits," he got over it all and wanted out, and being crazy and not contributing was his way of quitting the scene, at least according to Nick Mason. Or it could be that he did too much LSD and his brain got fried. Could be one or a combination of reasons.

    • @garyschill7923
      @garyschill7923 2 роки тому

Syd has solo records which are pretty amazing, produced by his former bandmates (who found it a very trying experience). "The Madcap Laughs" is one of the album titles; "Octopus Ride" is one of the standout tracks. It's pretty amazing, albeit crude material. Syd's damaged mental state is evident in the recordings, making them even more powerful.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!, This is how it was back then for "Pink Floyd". They loved Sid and knew something was REALLY OFF, but, they seemed to be curious about where it was going to take them, so they allowed him to do his creative thing, til one day I guess they figured it was just too much and had to replace him, really sad.

  • @Trendyflute

Music is all about how much it resolves in the way it expects and doesn't challenge, versus how much it doesn't do what you expect and it does challenge you. And every listener wants a different balance. The more you hear, the more you're ok with being challenged by and large. For me today this song isn't that shocking or hard to follow, but a few years ago I would be right there with Alex's opinion. I bet Alex can come back to this years later (or maybe sooner) and have a different opinion.

When it comes to Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, Interstellar Overdrive is certainly indicative of his 'sound painting' approach to musicianship, it's overtly free form and enormously expressive! However, I think either See Emily Play, Matilda Mother, Flaming or Bike best illustrate his peculiar gift for melody and wordplay. Nobody wrote tripped out Pop like Psychedelic Syd, back when he 'Shone like the sun.'

The bass carried the "melody" if you can call it that. Waters's bass line gave Syd a foundation from which to experiment with the guitar. It's kinda cool because it does kind of give you a sensation of floating in interstellar space. But with the word Overdrive in the title, it seems like it needed to be more fast paced and aggressive. The felt like an experience that influenced a sort of passive musical response as opposed to a piece of music that elicits an experience.

Re: "Interstellar Overdrive" vs. "Revolution #9", which came first:
Fun fact: this, and the whole album THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, was recorded next door to the Beatles when they were doing SGT. PEPPER, and there was some cross-pollination, likely. Namely, the similar endings to both albums; compare the SGT. PEPPER sound-effect fade-out of side-two with the sound effect fade out after "Bike", the last song on PIPER.

A & A, this was a really good idea to do this song before doing more of Wish You Were Here. Good thinkin'. I would like to plead with you to listen to the whole Wish You Were Here album all in one shot, rather than just listening to SOYCD Pts 6-9. Please! The whole album flows so incredibly well as one work of art. I don't think Alex will feel as much impact from just doing SOYCD Pts 6-9 by itself. The tracks all segue into each other. Except, of course, between Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar. But even there, the mellowness of the end of WTTM moving into the strong smacking of the first sounds of Have a Cigar is just SO dramatic and well orchestrated that it's also a fantastic, thrilling transition. Please! Please! Please! the whole album!

67 Floyd reactions? There's still many bands to get to 1 on. Television, Kraftwerk, Wire, Stooges, Roxy Music.

The Batles & Pink Fliyd, you cannot get any more Polar Opposites, in terms of Songwriting & Production Style. Where to g next with Pink Floyd, Obsecured By Clouds "Free Four", "What's Uh The Deal..." "The Gold It's In...", "Childhoods End".

Just a jump in to the Floyd/Oz comment....
If you play Disney's Fantasia ( ESPECIALLY the scene) BALD MOUNTAIN along with BLACK SABBATH'S / DEATHS CALLING .. It'll blow your mind!!
Jack Osbourne also mention how much of Fantasia matches up w/ Sabbath!
Hope you give it a go?! 🎶🎧

Try "Be careful with that axe, Eugene" live off "Ummagumma" this time with guitar by Gilmour. This album was released in 1969 and was the final experimental break from the Sid Barrett influence.

Hey guys! A song you both need to check out is In Any Tongue by David Gilmour, from the live at Pompeii concert. I swear, the guitar solo is one of his best, right up there with Comfortably Numb!

Just to be clear, this much more in tune with the free jazz and new music of this era. One of their peer bands, AMM, produced music much further out than this. It is part of it's era, but you can hear amazing covers of this from very different bands. It is something I have listened to over and over again. Now it's time to pull out Careful with that Axe Eugene.
