G'day Everyone, I'm BACK! Monty Website: montycompost.co/ Use code SELFSUFFICIENTME at checkout for a 20% discount. Background story: I first met Ash about 4 years ago when she approached me with this "crazy idea" to make a compost "sniffer" (Monty). I'm pleased to see the progress on Monty and after 12 months of use it is not only working well but it has continually improved through software updates. Lastly, in case you didn't know, I have been sick with a bad and unusual strain of the flu. I'm slowly getting better. Thank you all for the support! Cheers, Mark :)

      I love a good gadget!
I'm thinking this gadget would be great in my outdoor mushroom beds too!
      Because I'm in Texas, the
fall/winter temperatures outside are very inconsistent, and so is the moisture, & humidity.
I'm always wondering what's happening out there!
I don't know if the mushroom bed gives off gasses specific to mushrooms, but it's a bed of woodchips, so there's always composting happening in there.
      Nice gadget!!

    • @gardengatesopen
      @gardengatesopen 8 місяців тому +5

      I just ordered one!
I'm super jazzed to get it!
We're just getting into mushroom growing season over here in Texas, and my bed of woodchips with my Lions Mane mushrooms is where I'll be using the Monty!
It's constantly breaking down and composting, so I am excited to monitor it!
But there was a little discrepancy in the order process I figured I would just let everyone know about...
I first entered my shopping choice
(The Monty) & then went to the checkout page WITHOUT making an account or signing up with their website for emails.
The website offered a base price of $130. (USD)
      That was all good.
And with the Self Sufficient ME discount code my total
      (without shipping or tax)
      came to $104. USD
      (That is even better!!)
At that time I hadn't filled out the whole order page,
      so as I usually do,
I first signed up to "create an account" with this company just to help my order process, in case anything goes wrong later.
      So I did that.
      Well !
Low & behold my order base price jumped up to $199.00 (USD) !!!
That was before any discount codes.
      Even with Mark's discount,
      (which would be $160.)
or the company's offer of $10. off,
      (Which would be $190.)
      (you can't use both codes)
the base price of $200. was just a bit too pricey for me!
Especially since I had already been offered a base price of $130.
      by the website!
So in order to get back to the price offering of $130.
I had to unsubscribe from the website,
      and exit the entire website,
      and start all over.
I went back to You Tube, and clicked on Mark's information page, then clicked on the link to Monty Compost which Mark provides.
(Somehow bringing the base price down to $130. (USD).)
      So yes -
I was back where I started at the Monty website with the offering price at $130. once again.
(THIS TIME on the website, the base price was $163.00 (USD) again.)
Plus, the company is offering a $50. discount with the price ALREADY SLASHED,
(What I'm trying to say is-
Part of that price difference the company is offering a sale price of $50. off.
But if you create an account, that $50 sale discount is erased.)
So BEFORE creating an account, we ARE able to use Mark's discount code, AND use the company's sale price.
      I DID order.
      and with the discount
      Subtotal is $104. (USD)
      plus shipping,
      my total is $114. (USD)
      SOLD!!!
I plan on going back and creating an account with the website later.
It's really great to be able have these discounts!
      Thanks Monty Compost
      AND Mark !!!
I'm looking forward to using it !
Now I can finish watching the video! ha! 👍

What, would you say, is your best methods of keeping your veggies alive, when you have such extreme heat? Every year I try, but there is a point where it seems impossible to keep things alive, once the temperature exceeds 46 deg C (115 deg F,) here in Paphos, Cyprus. Luckily, it is only a couple of months, usually, but lately it seems like it is taking longer and longer to reach the cooler Autumn temps, here. I have an irrigation system and shade cloth-covered areas and I understand that beyond a certain point, plants will not put out flowers, which means no fruit. But my concern is just getting them through this point alive, so that they begin producing new fruit. For example capsicum (sweet peppers) is supposedly not an annual. I have no problem getting it through winter (we have neither frost nor snow, where I live, but sometimes short hail storms which my shade cloth protects from.) But I cannot get a single pepper through the summer heat. They may still be alive upon the tail end of summer, but it will never recover; never produce flowers again, let alone fruit.

Thank you for being so considerate to the skink! The tail is suck an important tool for escaping predators, and with how small it was, handling it could potentially be dangerous. As someone who loves reptiles a whole ton, it's always refreshing to see someone respect them and treat them with care. Even if it's someone I've seen do it before :)

      You're right,
      composting does take time!
      But...
The thing about making your own compost is the QUALITY is always SOOOO MUCH BETTER
when you've made it at home.
Especially when you consider the live microbes in the soil.
Bagged compost may not be expensive to buy,
      however,
a lot of the original microbes have died off while sitting in that bag.
By the time you've gotten it home, while yes, it's still a good product,
it's not nearly as good and effective as compost that you've just moved from your own growing stash.
As for the time it takes,
well, once you START composting, it simply continues!
And then you've always got compost ready to be added to the garden.
I look at it this way-
If I set it up, it basically works on its own while I'm off doing other things.
If I never set it up,
I'm still off doing other things,
and then I ALSO don't have any compost!
      AND
At home, there's zero plastic bags involved.
      Either way,
      time is marching on,
I may as well let it work in my favor.
Plus, it's always better when it's homemade.
      AND
I don't have to be concerned about any pesticides or herbicides that might be hiding in it.
Which has been a problem in commercially grown soil & compost.
All good reasons for making your own compost vs. buying it.👍

    She's a good spokes person.
I'm American that is awesome gardening thing to have.
I swear, I watch your channel to see if your going to wrestle a cabbage to the ground or sneak up on a carrot.
It is good to care about nature but quit playing with snakes, we can't loose another Aussie.
I know that is probley wrong but I thought it was funny.
I really do enjoy the channel...
This year was my first year gardening in 7 years.
I bought a 6 pack of purple Cherokee tomato plant's on clearance in July and fell in love.
    I killed 4 of them.
So far it's still too hot here for them to bare fruit but I got flowers. I manly got them to grow for seeds next spring.
They are so tasty the ones I've had...
Then the next thing I know I'm growing mustards, turnips and brassica's of alll kinds and got a compost bin.
Had my first harvest of bok choy last week and made Tom Kha Soup.
    Thank you for for channel!
I'm insecure about my gardening and some of us just need a little reassuring and insparation.

Good morning Mark! You are sounding so much better than the last time we heard from you! This sounds like something that would appeal to someone who is into stats and figures, so thanks, but no thanks. I'm more of an old school put the leaves and clippings in a pile and leave it (or bury it) gardener. I'm sure Monty has its appeal.

I totally agree! Unfortunately sustainability education was quite minimal when I was at school which is sad to look back on 😢Actually one of the things we’re doing is partnering with schools in Australia to use Monty as an educational tool in classrooms so composting can become a part of the curriculum 💚

Hi Mark. Great video and awesome product. I live in beautiful South Australia, I want to have a compost bin in my back yard. Two concerns. I have a neighbour on the north side fence with bedroom Windows, I get sunrise in the morning from the east and sunset in the West. The South side of the yard can not be used for no space. I don't have any shade on on the other sides. What would be my next best option for placement for the bin. Or can I use some green shade cloth off the fence to cover the bin a little. Cheers Kate.

With any citrus in compost, halving or quartering the fruit assists in decomposition. Putting fruit etc, through a shredder /mulcher accelerates decomp /compost.
