from what i've seen, everyone who hated Book of Night are fans of the folk of air series. They expected something similar and got thrown off when she wrote something completely different. Everyone who hasn't read the series seems to love Book of Night, which tells me that it's a solid book on it's own. It's just that the masses are comparing it to its big sibling so to speak.
Hide is sounding similar to a WEBTOON called Gremoryland..bunch of kids go to an amusement park, some end up dying, there’s subplots and backstories like romance and that, a missing friend, they end up being killed off..
I’m glad you liked book of night! I had to dnf bc it reminded me of a former Disney star going wild to distance themselves from their childhood persona
wait i'm actually so glad to see that you enjoyed book of night😭 i gave it i think 4.5 stars and i have yet to really see anyone who felt as positively about it as i do... glad to see i'm not alone lmao
I think Nine Lives mixes two Agatha Christie books. The Pale Horse has a list of people who start dying. I think it’s easy to look at Agatha Christie’s work and think because her books are very accessible, that it’s something easily achievable if you’re a decent author. But I think part of her skill was making it look straightforward.
Ok as someone who has never read Holly Black's Cruel Prince, I feel like I can dive into it without any expectations! And only afterwards... Try the cruel prince series
What a fun video idea! I really enjoyed Book of Night! I was also a fan of The Folk of the Air series and The Darkest Part of the Forest, so it's possible to be a fan of her other work and enjoy this one. If people are looking for a continuation of the same feels from Cruel Prince/etc, then Book of Night is not that. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I'm shocked Gallant showed up for so many people, I read it this year and loved it. My friend who also read it thought the ending should have been different, so that's the only reason I could think of for people to hate it 🤔
This is a good idea! Someone's 'trash' is someone else's 'treasure'. I have to read Colleen Hoover since everyone seems to hate her lol And Nine Lives....I was incensed at the ending (Peter Swanson is a twistoholic...does twists for the sake of twists)
Absolutely fascinated that you loved Book of Night ❤ I don’t love urban fantasy so I don’t know that I’ll ever read it but it’s nice to hear a different opinion!
Ok, I'm going to read Book of Night! I didn't read it at first because the library hold was gonna take like 6 months lol then I heard literally nothing but horrible reviews. But I think that based on what you said about expectations, I understand what kind of mindset to have. I'm excited to give it a try!
I actually felt similarly about Book of Night. I had maybe read one of Holly Black's previous books but that's really it and went into it with low expectations when I saw so many people not enjoying it but I actually really enjoyed it. It wasn't a 5 star for me but was a 4 and I didn't really understand the complaints? Also, I don't mind an unlikable main character haha so I was still rooting for her. I do think parts of it felt very 'simple' but I don't think it was a bad thing. It was a fun ride! 💖
I have a version of And Then There were None that was after the slurs were changed (it was still 10 little Indians, which is still erm...) but before the ending was rewritten. I didn't think I needed to like the characters, since I expected them all to die. I'd love to read a retelling of it. Maybe not this one though. Someone already mentioned Gremoryland, a webcomic about a killer carnival story, and I also recommend it. Warning, it's more abstract than it first seems. Fun thriller though.
Okay, first I love the style of this video! It’s so creative! And I really enjoyed hearing your different perspective on Book of Night (plot twist for sure 🤣). I still think I want to give Holly Black’s Cruel Prince books chance 😄
I love Gallant D: I’m a big fan of V E Schwab. It’s not like her other books, but it was still very up my ally and I think, though it’s kinda slow and a lil confusing, it’s still a good read and it’s fun to see the creativity
I know this is old but I haven't ready many Holly Black adult. But Tithe, and Ironside.. I know there is one in the middle.. are amazing ya urban fantasy and I highly recommend if you can read ya still. I HATED Coldest Girl in Coldtown
Now that I think about it I haven’t heard anything about Book of Night either. As someone who loved Cruel Prince I’m interested to see what I’ll think now 😅💕
First I’m ashamed I’m seeing this video so late 🙈 but I’m not going to lie I’m happy you disliked the ending of Nine Lives because of course I HATED IT!!!. It was terrible LOL! I’m happy The Book of Night worked for you, that was a book I was hoping to really like. I haven’t read anything by Holly Black but for whatever reason I just couldn’t get into that one. This was such a fun video!!
Ive loved pretty much everything Holly Black has written, Im excited to get into Book of Night. I fee llike a lot of people were expecting something Cruel Prince meats Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo then got upset when it wasn't. Shame Hide wasn't better, love the idea of it.
It sucks when you love a book that everyone else hates, because you're so excited to talk about it and share it with people but everyone around is just trying to convince you that it sucks and you shouldn't like it
"Rock, paper, scissor" is one of my all time favorite thrillers (and I am reading only thriller/crimes, so at this point it is very difficult to give a book 5 stars, because most of the books remind my of another book). On the other hand "Lock every door" that had so many recommendations and I couldn't wait to read it - I was dissapointed, it was so bad and predictable for me.
You’re definitely the only one I’ve seen rate (or even finish in some cases lol) book of night . But I can relate because some of my favorite books are books everyone else hates lol.

hmm I haven’t actually read any other Holly Black besides the darkest part of the forest and the spiderwick chronicles which she co-wrote… so maybe I should pick up book of night prior to the cruel prince 🤔🧐 💛💖
I thought Book of Night barely had a plot and didn't give enough for the magic system. I went into this with no expectations because I've never read a Holly Black and was somehow still disappointed.
