Hello Davie! Through the past 62 years I've caught many trout on the Royal Coachman when nothing else would work. It is a attractor pattern and more. I've never been able to figure out what it resembles. Wonderful fly. Best wishes to you from Elizabethton, Tennessee USA
I found that if you tye the peacock hul with the string it both strengthens the hurl and keeps it neat Thanks alot Davie keep these great videos coming Thomas
This softhackle Royal Coachman looks easy to tie but I am having a devil of a job with the final hackle tie in. 3 tries down ??? to go before I put on in my fly wallet! Great video Davie
This fly is an absolute panfish killer here in the pacific Northwest. Just came off the pond using a variant of this fly. The bluegill during the witching hour wouldn't stay off my line.
Hi phryar, I know the feathers you are talking about and I would say that the fly would look and fish even better...Well Done... Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it comes... All the very best Davie
@skipperfox007 My pleasure Alan.Lately I've been using polyester sewing thread from the supermarket instead of purpose made tying thread. It's strong, comes in every colour ,in sizes of fine to thick ,doesn't absorb water & at $3.00 for 12 spools a bloody good bargain ! Hope you feel better soon,it's great talking to you here ! Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you? Kind Regards,Tony...
@skipperfox007 Hi, My thread used to break when I started to tie coz my thread kept touching the hook point..You'll notice Davie's thread never touches the hook point..The hook point wont cut the thread but it will fray & damage it enough for the thread to break under normal tension.. My problem was that I didn't get enough tension from my aging bobbins , so I stuck duct tape across the actual bobbin holes & that strategy gives me just enough tension.. Hope this helps?? Mr. Davie, you are a magician of the feather, very good dexterity. very nice fly. It's a pleasure to watch you make flies.
Lovely looking fly Davie. Well explained as usual and very well tied. Thank you for sharing.

Many thanks Davie - that's a great help!!

I don't have a white hen cape at the moment, so I tried using the white feathers from under a grouse wing, and it makes for a very nice spidery hackle

+Davie McPhail Thanks for the encouragement!
Seasonal greetings to you too,

Using a white collar instead of a quill wing looks so much easier.
My guess is it would fish better as well.

I never seen this version before. very different, but cool.
Good job with the video Davie. I live in the USA and was wondering how you tie your caddis flies across the big pond?
Hi Davie - great video, as usual!!
Could you tell me where you acquired the white hen feather??
Thanks
George

Hey Davie, nice one mate. This is a lake fly right? Is it fished on a sinking line or greased in the film?

muy buena
do you think creating this pattern as woolly bugger (size 8-10) and fished as a streamer would be effective?
