    That's one way to do it! I've read a little about vertical tillage, it's purpose is to make a uniform seed bead reduce compaction layers for better plant yields because the roots can get deep were moisture is.

      it was difficult for me to run a tractor without doing deep soil cutting or deep chiseling. with almost no disturbance of the soil my old school way of doing things was screaming at me, "you are just wasting fuel and time" I fought back by saying I'm trying something new. thanks for watching.

      Soybean Farmer I think it worked out great for ya. I think after you plow do the same in the spring before you plant That 4020 is a great everything tractor.

      Michigan Farming, does it sound strange to say, "I really like my 4020" :)

    New subscriber here. That disk is doing a bang-up job. I'd be happy too. Sizing the residue and mixing a little soil to help the breakdown. My disk won't go straight like yours, wish it did. Your right up to speed now with your VT disk. Visited family in Lenore, what part of North Carolina you in. I've downsized the farm, never was big time, we have a lot in common. Thanks doug .

      Hi Douglas and welcome to my channel. from your comment this morning at Northern farmer channel "We portray ourselves" I am drawing a conclusion that you live in Canada? I spent 18 years employed at RTP with Nortel working closely with Canadian BNR. As a result I traveled frequently to Ottawa were I experienced the correct meaning of the word 'cold' weather. when I see the Northern farmer outside in that cold I get flashbacks to January in Ottawa trying to get the rent-a-car warmed up so I could leave the office. my Farm is in the central part of NC about 20 mile east of Raleigh but Raleigh grows every year so next year it might be 19 miles. yep Doug, I am delighted with my experiment and how well it works. today I moved up to 6th gear and with the increase in ground speed there was a performance increase with the cutting and mixing of the surface residue. Doug, thanks for subscribing and watching. I hope you get some entertainment from my previous uploads.

    Sorry to hear about your filling. As Gomer Pyle would say surprise surprise you can move the gains and vertical till with your disc. Seems to work just like you wanted for vertical till and change it to cut when needed.

      Did one heck of a fine job cutting up surface residue. If I had the money I'd like to modify it and move the blades in closer and get better residue cutting.

    I never knew they would go to that shallow of an angle. Ur straw chopper does good to I wish my 525 would do that good. That will be good to leave some residue on top the soil. Nice video

      Jake, thanks man. 16 years ago when I first brought the 3300 home and put it to work the older Farmer who has through the years helped me stopped by and watched me pick beans. I stopped, he walked over and walked around the 3300 then asked what I paid for it. I told him, he replied, you bought the chopper and they threw in the combine. man was he right about that. picking beans, shelling corn, a good chopper is the first step to breaking down the residue. wheat, not so much since raking and baling for selling might be on the list of additional income. Jake thanks for commenting and watching..

    Your doing the same thing I do, Just try it and see if it works or not ! To me it looks like it worked pretty good for what you wanted it to do, Like you said its not a $30.000 machine but by golly it did the same thing ! Now you have another tool in your tool box to use ! Keep up the great work. Bandit

      yep, got to try something new when the same old same old just don't work anymore. did some more today at a faster ground speed and the results were even better than the day before. running in 6th gear produced an improved cutting of the surface residue as well as mixing a bit better. Bandit, thanks for commenting and watching.

    We do the exact same thing in our hay fields because it makes it easier for the seed and fertilize to get in the ground. Do you happen to be a member on Agtalk forum?

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  7 років тому +1

      no not a member of Agtalk. this is a new to me practice I hope will improve my soil and up bean yields. without a willingness to try something new I would keep on doing the same things and getting less and less in return. when conditions change then changing practices are required. thanks for watching.

    Just a couple of thoughts about your field. Is the field a perfect rectangle? I ask because I noticed that you have done it over at least twice with this machine and it looks as though you may be using the same wheel marks. I guess that everything else that has been done has been done parallel or actually in these wheelings -tyre marks from you tractor (eg cultivation, seeding, spraying, combining etc) and this quickly leads to soil compaction especially if the soil is wet.
    Assuming that the long headlands are not exactly parallel then it would be beneficial to start work from this normal "finish" headland. It will be a slightly rougher ride but the tractor will develop a rolling motion from side to side. This is nothing like as rough a ride as if you were working the soil at right angles to the direction you have appear to have used up to now where you are likely to be bouncing up and down and the tractor grunting to climb out of one set of wheelings into the next.
    Lastly have you dug any soil pits in the field to examine the soil profile to establish the current average depth of root penetration, soil life activity and to establish the depth of any compacted area of soil? If so I strongly suggest you do so before ploughing.

    great video... I think that's a dual purpose tool. not only is it cutting up the residue but its also forcing some of the residue into the cutting grooves to increase your nitrogen dispersion ahead of your plowing it under. oughta help your output next season, in my opinion. keep em coming. thx, ks

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  7 років тому

      yep, dual functioning tool. never thought before to attempt a vertical tillage with it. did some more today at a faster ground travel speed and it worked even better. experimentation has allowed me to obtain a new tillage tool without having to buy anything. thanks for watching.

    This is the 4th time I have tried to comment.....Doing what you wanted it to do.....will aid in plowing by aiding in the flow under the frame, plus giving the weed seed some distance from daylight

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  7 років тому

      some kind of technical difficulty has plagued me recently with commenting at other channels. I have lost the entire comment. to avoid retyping I did a copy of the entire comment just before clicking on the reply block so if it was lost I could do a paste to put it back in. annoying glitch. yes, I am hoping by cutting the residue it will not get hung up in the plow and interfere with the turning action of flipping the dirt. yep, putting the surface weed seed deep down under is my final objective. coulters on the plow will help also. thanks for the comment and for watching.

      with the results I got today on the second outing with my new use of an existing implement I could not be more delighted. today I went from 5th to 6th gear, the increased ground travel speed produced a better cutting action on the surface residue. I got me a poor man's vertical tillage tool and I did not even know I had it. experimentation is a good thing. thanks for watching and commenting.

    Soybean Farmer-Dad was going to buy a Kuhn excelerator but he does not like how the vertical tillage does not turn the soil or get rid of the weeds. But since you can also make yours a disk dad would probably like that but we can't turn our 496 disc into a vertical till.

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  7 років тому

      Ethan Weatherhead - vertical tillage is not about turning soil it is about cutting the surface residue left from the crop just harvested into smaller pieces for the purpose of faster decomposition while remaining on the surface. it stressed me to do it because I was used to seeing the dirt cut and turned when pulling a disc. until several weeks had passed I felt like I had accomplished nothing on the land I tested the practice on. now several months later I can most definitely see the benefits of vertical tillage. check out this old video on my channel. ua-cam.com/video/Akqf0M4BzZw/v-deo.html

      Soybean Farmer- Dad just did not want to spend 30,000 dollars on an implement that will not turn the soil or knock the weeds out.

    How fast are you going? My son works on his friends farm and they do Vertical Tillage with a 25' Tiller and they run about 10 mph. He did some on our ground this year and we had real good weed control and seed germination.

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  7 років тому

      5th gear about 4mph. this to me is a setup preprocess for heavy deep plowing to come at a later date. the plowing will be a first here on this farm in over 20 years. hoping to put weed seed deep under with the plow.

  • @cjfarms2239
    @cjfarms2239 7 років тому

    if you look at our older videos you can see our great plains ultra till, its a veritical tillage to, and with them you should be going fairly fast, but with the ultra till, it has straight blades on the front, like what your disk is, then the these rolling baskets that pull the trash up, and dirt, and it makes a very good seed bed

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  7 років тому

      today when I went back out I ran in 6th gear, faster than yesterday. made some video and saw what I think is a lot better cutting of the surface residue. I already watched the video with the rolling baskets and I am considering trying to find a set I can put on this disc. funny that, I don't have the coulters for the plow and I'm now wanting something else. got to get the plow right first.

    • @cjfarms2239
      @cjfarms2239 7 років тому

      which rolling baskets, the spikey ones or the ones at the back of the machine?

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  7 років тому

      Ultra tillin - Published on Oct 29, 2015 the rolling baskets on the back would be easier to find but the spikey ones would do the most good for what I am wanting to accomplish.

    • @cjfarms2239
      @cjfarms2239 7 років тому

      ah okay, and yes the spikey ones are the ones you need, but they are more $$$$$$$ i would guess, and i have some magnet mount shots on the ultra till, that i never uploaded, if you want to see the action of it in soybean stubble if you want

    Has it decreased your time working on the bean residue?

    • @SoybeanFarmer3300
      @SoybeanFarmer3300  6 років тому

      Walter B - yes. last year I noticed during spring field work the smaller cut pieces of soybean residue were being disc under in one pass and trash was not building up on my coulterless plow. since the ground disturbance with vertical tillage was minimal there were no real concerns about erosion over the winter months. thanks for asking and watching.

      yea, that would work since there is almost no drag resistance with the gains set vertical. I might go next week and get the coupler converters off the grain drill cylinder and do the Allen field if it dries out enough.
