What I love about her is that she's just honest and doesn't try to blow the seriousness of the music out of proportion. She just wants herself and us to enjoy it.
Having lived in China (Beijing) for over a decade, I met her by accident, because a friend of mine studied at the conservatory. She was and is a very charming and open person, very skilled, very determined in a natural way. I love her as a person and wish her All the Very Best, always.
Yuja is just the best! Her talent in piano is obvious but, her silliness and laughter is just as inspiring. This was an amazing interview! Thank you so much.
The other day I shared my thought with a much older man and we kind of both agreed on how honest her performances were, and I feel that I will be able to touch the true implications or whatever true feelings, motivations, or reasonings in old masters' minds, just from listening to her playing. This is the first time since then that I've stumbled upon another use of the "honest" word about Yuja Wang, so I got excited and these words jus flown out.
It's wonderful that someone like YUJA WANG can be alive in my life time and show me how diversified a classical pianist can be. I'd love to play piano duets with her if ever we had the chance. I've been playing piano for 65 years of my 69 years and find music a place to relax, to pass the time, to enjoy all types of piano music and to share music with others. It's not for everyone, but the gift stays with you all your life. I hope Yuja Wang continues to show off her obvious talent for many years yet,, and to give the world this special type of music. Enjoy your life, Yuja. And someone will relish you when you're ready to share your life with that person. Thanks for your music!!!
4:55 I don’t understand how any human being is capable of maintaining works of such incredible difficulty and length without even physically practicing it. I also think that Yuja’s perspective on pianism and music in general is very very inspiring and refreshing. She is a miracle to both music and the world.
@@pjbpiano sorry but that’s not true. Yes, talent is important but 99% of the cases (save 1% for that ultra genius) those people are a result of incredible hard work from a very very young age. We are talking about insane amount of studying and practicing to reach that level, that’s all they do. The “not practicing” part mentioned here comes after decades of honing her skills (physical and muscle memory) to such a ridiculous level that now makes something like a Prokofiev 2nd Piano Concerto that you and I find impossible to fathom, natural for her to learn. So yes talent is important (not gonna lie here) but what you give (time, studying, practice, sacrifices etc) is always what you get out.
@@gpapa31 you might not believe this, but it’s not practice that will get you to her level. You need to have certain biological advantages first of all. People that do not have very strong muscle memory in addition to mental memory cannot reach this level. I have a friend that once he studies a piece, he will always be able to recall it-no matter how many years pass by. If he needs to perform it, all he would need is a few days to put the piece back in shape. I believe all concert pianists have this ability. If you are someone that just after a few weeks of studying a piece, you cannot physically or mentally recall it, you will not reach Yuja Wang’s level. Also, there are people whom technique is intuitive to them. If you’re not one of those people, you will become a great pianist if you practice all the right moves, but there are some things you will never be able to do. Yuja has all the prerequisites. @@pjbpiano I have an incline of what you’re saying and yes that is something that would apply to someone like Wang but the reason (apart from the great talent) is that she started doing this at a very very young age. Talent is something that is genetically inherited and there’s no doubt genes are important. Genes are the blueprint of life. I LOVED her response to the New York critic who wrote "If her skirt had of been any shorter, the concert would have been R rated!".....Yuja: "I don't give a shit about what he thinks!"
That was an L.A. critic, and she would"give a shit" about what he wrote if it had been complimentary. Her sometimes vulgar language is often on the same level as her tawdry stage attire. Ms. Wang should keep in mind that there are a lot of girls (especially Asian music students) who look up to her as a role model and she certainly should care about that.
The only thing I would say in response is - for many young heterosexual males seeing an attractive young woman such as Yuga Wang wearing a micro mini skirt with spikey high heels on stage is undeniably distracting, however great the playing. Attention should not be diverted in such a way from what should be a rewarding experience hearing a great masterwork brilliantly performed. An elegant gown would add to the occasion visually without looking inappropriately vampish.
Im sure she realizes that young girls look up to her and care about it. I think thats why her choice in wearing something she feels comfortable in is all the better.. It tells girls they can express themselves and don't need to give about a fuck about what boring, prude, tired ass people, in the classical community think. Thank god for once someone is breaking the rules a bit. Some people in the classical community need to lighten the fuck up. At the end of the day its about sharing the experience of music.

@@TheGreatPerahia Yuja always seems nervous when she is interviewed. She is an awesome talent, highly intelligent, physically attractive and with a great sense of humour, but she really cares what people think. That is one reason why I admire her willingness to innovate and push the boundaries. For someone like Yuja, that is a frightening thing to do. Trying to create something new is not always going to be successful. Even when something new is great, some are bound to criticise. Wonderful interview with an amazing artist. Many levels of genius on display; flawless piano, superior memory, clear and concise speech, pitch perfect humor. Expresses herself very well in her second language. Knows that Music is Philosophy. And has obviously grown into each composer's heartfelt expressions. Bravo!!! Hope to see her live in concert soon. AFTER 2020, of course.
Refreshing honesty, humble sensitivity virtuosity and a lovely beauty. A most outstanding pianist I’ve experience and am grateful she is in this planet sharing all that love 💕 🎶👏🏼
I like her very much! Lucky I met her once in a Conservatory in the City. She is not only a famous Chinese Pianist who live on stage, but also a very nice and sweet girl who lives in real life.
yes I love when she plays her favorite piece - by Chopin- I love the way she plays that. She likes romance pieces - the emotional thing. I find it interesting that some musicians are so emotional in their playing. So much of their expression goes into the music - being muses for us. But then you wonder about the status of their hearts. I was impressed with her response to the question of what she wants most in life that she does not have. There is so much I want to say in response to that but I would go on and on. I felt sad when she was responding to that question. Her demeanor changed so much after the quick joking. She is really compelling, but yes she is human. I am having Yuja withdrawal and I need to go see her perform again. Her recordings are wonderful, but she must be seen and heard. Thanks Yuja! I hope you feel loved and love.
Recently in New York she has been interviewed by a woman from a musical newspaper. She told more about hear mood, the difficulty and sacrifices she faces when being always on the road, and feeling somehow forgotten after the end of a tour with an orchestra. But deep inside I think she is really happy when on stage, and as far as she can perform, she will be happy.
Such a beautiful interview (and human being!): yes, her 'way of life' must be intertwined with her artistry, because separating them will cause either a 'boring' experience or losing her spontaneity which is so much part of her artistry!
Yuja Wang is an inspiration to so many people in the world. I wish her the best of good health and happiness. This is an awesome interview that showcases raw talent and genuine authenticity. Keep up the great work!

I just hope this precious lady survives all this picking over her life, and develops her art, her greatest gift to all who love her. Edit, Sept 2020 - sheer delight just grows as time passes; If she hadn't her artistry, she would simply be the most treasured friend anyone could wish for. 🎵😊😊
only someone with such a pure heart can play the piano with such brilliance.
Thanks for watching, EcuaLA!
Thank you very much for letting us to know this amazing person and artist a bit more closely.
"Tell me to stop! Otherwise I won't!
SO ADORABLE!!!!!
Impressed by how American she is, and how much still of this generation. Her taste is as impeccable as her playing.
There's something so endearing about her. Gosh.
I think it's the innocent child-like part of her.
My favorite living pianist..😊👂
Yuja Wang integrated virtuosity with depth of meaning.
And still does! Thanks for watching, Michael Wong!
Интересно наблюдать диалог. И ответы музыкальными фразами.
My favorite interview with Yuja Wang. Thank you..
Refreshing honesty, humble sensitivity virtuosity and a lovely beauty. A most outstanding pianist I’ve experience and am grateful she is in this planet sharing all that love 💕 🎶👏🏼
Thank you for the interview as well as posting the names of the composers and their works.
Thanks for watching, Gary Kuo!
I totally relate to what she says about practicing. For me too, the very first time I perform something is better than any subsequent time.
Amazing interview, so deep and genuine
Me encanta la música que haces, pero también me encanta tu naturalidad y tu forma de reir. Me agrada tu sentido del humor, de buen humor.
Goodness , she looks like a doll, has the body of a goddess and plays like heaven! Nature has spoilt her and given us a gift!
I just love her playing the Gluck melody. She plays that better than anyone else IMO.
nice,beautifull,
so talented woman
Talented, smart, attractive AND a sense of humor. As enigmaticmisfit wrote in an earlier post, "She is an amazing artist."
Had the pleasure of listening to her and the Concertgebouw with Mariss Jansons in Shostakovitjs first. What an evening in Amsterdam:-)
Most amazing person. Totally love her! The best!!!
I've met her In 2006. She's such a nice and bubbly person !
I like her very much! Lucky I met her once in a Conservatory in the City. She is not only a famous Chinese Pianist who live on stage, but also a very nice and sweet girl who lives in real life.
Such an artists spirit, i love her.
yes I love when she plays her favorite piece - by Chopin- I love the way she plays that.
Yuja Wang is a genius!
She could do anything she put her mind to! 💗
she's a fucking hero!!! what a cool lady!!!
Such a beautiful interview (and human being!): yes, her 'way of life' must be intertwined with her artistry, because separating them will cause either a 'boring' experience or losing her spontaneity which is so much part of her artistry!
this is a great series
Yuja Wang is an inspiration to so many people in the world. I wish her the best of good health and happiness. This is an awesome interview that showcases raw talent and genuine authenticity. Keep up the great work!
