A DALI signal is very often used in the field of building control for simple and straightforward control of lighting and lighting scenes. Devices with a DALI interface (mainly limited to luminaire control gear, sensors and push-buttons for lighting applications) are assigned unique DALI short addresses (up to 64 per line) via which the DALI control unit queries the status of the lamps and control gear (bidirectional communication) and sets them to the desired operating state. One advantage of the DALI standard is that two conductors of a 5-pole sheathed cable can be used for signal transmission, i.e. the insulated but unshielded signal cable can be located parallel to a voltage-carrying cable without having to fear that communication could be disturbed by unavoidable voltage inductions. This simplifies building installation and cabling considerably. The DALI control signal itself comes from a gateway (usually a KNX to DALI coupler/signal converter) or a stand-alone push-button or control device. The dimming behaviour (linear or algorithmic) as well as the PowerOn behaviour etc. of a control gear can optionally be parameterised directly at its DALI interface using a so-called DALI USB mouse or our DALI Bluetooth interface with free app for smartphones.
