    Excellent lesson really covers a lot but enough to get going to pickup the concept

      I appreciate the thought.
      These videos will never be as comprehensive as a course. I have those materials available elsewhere (and big changes to those very soon).
      UA-cam vids have to stay at this higher level to perform well.

    After seeing Oscar Peterson do a short demo of this technique I was hooked!
    One thing to note, you're going to get the best results on a piano with toned down high overtones. This won't sound right on a Yamaha with a lot of twing to it, the German and American Golden tone are generally the best to get a similar overtone structure to an actual read section.
    (this technique literally doesn't work on beat up old upright pianos, trust me, I have one)

    Great lesson. Would love to see an examination of other greats like Teddy Wilson, Wynton Kelly, Red Garland etc.

      Yes! Last week I started a new series breaking down tunes from my favorite recordings. Teddy and Red are already on the backlog list. Do you have a favorite Wynton Kelly tune I should consider?
      Thanks!

      @@JoshWalshMusic Awesome, appreciate the work you are doing. I would suggest 'Dig Dis' or 'Remember' from Hank Mobley's Soul Station album, so swingin'!

    Hey Josh, what piano VST you using for this? It sounds phenomenal!

    • @JoshWalshMusic
      @JoshWalshMusic  6 місяців тому +1

      Hey Piotr. Very astute take on the overtones. Indeed it sounds flat to me on old upright pianos too. But I do it anyway, because I can’t help myself.
      My goto VST for these videos is the Studio grand preset in Keyscape. It is incredible, though takes a pretty beefy computer to run it at low latency with the full sample loaded.

      @@JoshWalshMusic Haha, as one should! Gotta experiment or life gets boring!
      Also Keyscape I thought sounded similar, though you must've twesked the preset a bit, it sounds quite a bit better :D I've got Keyscape and the Yamaha C7 though I've found it to be rather flat a lot of the time.

      @@PiotrBarcz I have tweaked it quite a bit. Actually, UA-cam compression makes it sound a lot worse.
      The main reason for the flat vs full sound, in my experience, has to do with ensuring you have the full samples loading. Otherwise the overtones aren’t all there.
      As I mentioned, this takes up a lot of RAM. I run it on a Mac Studio with 192gb of RAM, so I have no issue. (Though I’m also recording four, 4k 60fps camera feeds at the same time).

    • @PiotrBarcz
      @PiotrBarcz 6 місяців тому

      @@JoshWalshMusic Yeah I was going to say it sounds better on your videos then it does through my own ASIO setup. I always load the full samples, I have 32 gigabytes of ram in my main computer so it isn't an issue.
      The flatness also has to do with the strange dynamic curve, you have to set it right, otherwise the volume cap is too low and you can't get a good twang (hard to keep it from twanging constantly though).

    You the man! Great way to harmonize melodies! P.S I think you should add the Bb-7 in the 4th bar of the pdf..?

      Hmm I’ll check it out. I try to be more accurate than the real book (not a high bar) but I’m not perfect!

    🔥🔥...what would be the reason to use drop 2 vs the normal block voicings?

    • @JoshWalshMusic
      @JoshWalshMusic  Рік тому +2

      Just a different sound. Drop 2 are more modern sounding as they emphasize the 10th instead of the octave.
      Check out the intro to Oscar Peterson’s It’s Allright With Me for some 🔥🔥🔥 drop 2s.
