    I was immediately attracted to this app when I saw a realistic water colour pallet just like my real ones. The colours you chose go in these oblong pallet spaces and stay there for use just like a real painting process. No others do this so realistically, except Corel’s Painter programmes. The rest is very good except the resolution problem. I look forward to this point being addressed. I am a traditional painter in all real media, so I think the developers have really grasped the nature of traditional methods. Great

    I Own both Rebelle 7 Pro and this software. I love both, very different but both excellent. This is far less complex than Rebelle, but it is a Very Good painting software, and above of all very easy of use and with a nice brush blending engine. I found that the Dry Brush in the Oil Paint Tools acts like a tracer of the previous layer too, fantastic! With the updates now it is possible to have custom canvas sizes and this is very useful. I love the brushes.

    a. custom canvas sizes.
    b. a more minimal interface with this brush engine
    I just don't like this kind of app design, it just makes it feel more like a toy or a game, not like an art tool. Other people might differ, but its not my thing.

    I agree that the canvas size is a big problem for serious artists, but I think that's the price we pay for such a fantastic brush engine. My bog standard iPad runs it ok, but there is significant lag. Perhaps one of the solutions may be to either build in an upscaling option (and there's some pretty decent ai resizing algorithims these days) or update the desktop app and have the option on the iPad to record a script file that can be played back within the desktop app at higher resoltion...Neither is ideal, but I have a feeling if they can come up with a few decent updates this may become my favourite painting app...just about to fire off an email to the developers with my suggestions...thanks for the great review video :)

    I have Realistic Paint Studio and the way I get around the canvas limitation is I blow it up with Gigapixel App from TapazLabs (I’m not sponsored) and overall it does a pretty good job of blowing up my work and the only trade off I’ve noticed is on the works that rely heavily on the detail of the paint brush texture I lose about 10% of that but in exchange my clients have yet to even notice and I sell digital prints that emulate natural media to private collectors. You can try it for free, just Google it up.

    I got it last night, and really like it. Was a little put off by the quirky depiction of surfaces like books and canvases and not just a flat screen. But got used to it pretty quick.
    I bought a 24 inch Huion last week and it feels like I have a lap desk with all my gear on it. It's kind of cool lol.

    Yeah, I had tested it before your video... but... canvas sizes, man! No way for professional work... Most apps mimicking trad painting have this HUGE problem. Clients ask one to print stuff of 1.5 meters wide, 300dpi. NO WAY. Good toy, a solid promise, but... not as is now. Rebelle 3 has a bit less this problem, but u can't either work and print a 1.5 x 1 meter canvas, 300 dpi. For me, till things changes, it's all (in desktop) Clip Studio (great trad brushes, even if is not a 1:1 mimic) and Krita.

    • @cisp360
      @cisp360 4 роки тому +3

      I agree. I was sad though because this app has the most realistic pencil. There is no setting or custom brush in clip studio paint or krita that comes as close to being a real color pencil than the one in this app. All other apps such as rebelle 3 or artrage 6 who claim that they have realistic pencil but the results are just fake. Rebelle 3 has okay watercolor but it is too slow even on brand new pc that I built for rendering 3D graphics. The watercolor in rebelle 3 is limited too. For example, if you make a huge canvas, you will have problem if you want to do washes.
      For me now, regarding watercolor, the only app worth using is Expresii. It is fast and you can have like 12k by 12k resolution. The result if superb. You can see the fiber of the paper, the infinite subtlety of the brush and ink. However, the watercolor style in Expresii is sumi-e, not western watercolor. But I did get amazing result using the app. So much so that I am jealous because my real watercolor skill cannot be this good because I cannot hit ctrl-z in real life :))

      krita was the first to honestly surprise me in that department way back in 2015-16ish
      i decided to stress test it with a 6ft x 9ft @300dpi on my pc and it actually worked
      David Revoy had for at the time, the coolest brushes too for Krita, and I still enjoy them. It's just Krita is Krita, stability woes kill me

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons 4 роки тому +2

      Krita does not crash on me anymore, since a while. It used to, but haven't noticed more crashes. They improve the code base at high speed... I've met in person the actual original developer, he is an extremely nice guy, he actually informed me a lot about stuff from other apps as well (in open source realm).
      They have now an ongoing-incoming new impasto engine, to better simulate oils (and other techniques) and that's really exciting. And yes, it also surprised me with the capability with large canvases. And they were first in adding line stabilization when Affinity Photo and even Photoshop did not have it yet ! (Photoshop has taken decades to add line smoothing to its PS CC 2018! Goes a long way in telling you how much a industry standard is not questioned... I've learnt and worked in companies with PS, and I am fully capable with it, I like its UI, so, is not criticizing what I can't use... ;) )
      Expresii is a jewel, I discovered it a while ago (from reading a comment in a Fresco video, lol), yep... Is a bit basic in features compared with these other softwares, but perfectly capable with the act of painting it self (and is zero issues to export to Affinity Photo, dirty cheap Photoshop, imo, and really good, for whatever extra retouch is needed). And yes, incredibly well optimized to work even in cheap tablets, and that reflects to in that it can work great in large canvases if handling decent (does not need anything too special) computers with enough memory, etc.
      The problem with Rebelle is that it does not mind that you have 32 GB of RAM, a 3900X and a good card, even a SSD disk. It simply can't deal with canvases (and I checked this with the developers, it is just like that, *but they might solve it for version 4!*) of the sizes needed for many commercial projects, specially those bigger than A4 and the usual 300 dpi. But is a MUCH better case than the sizes proposed by this tool, _Realistic Paint_ . Art Rage is in a middle place... You can do bigger canvases than with Rebelle, but is not as well perfoming as Clip Studio or Krita at those sizes. All of these (including Rebelle and PS, but (since recent CC versions, not CS5 and etc) PS at least can use QUITE the GPU for improving painting performance) are CPU and RAM based, not GPU. Even Affinity Photo is mainly CPU (BUT! uses BETTER the multiple threads than PS, while PS is mostly single threaded in what counts...old code base).
      I'm told that this is not a random weird matter, simply the BUS speed is not fast enough to transfer from GPU and the main system, and back, at enough speed, constantly, versus doing it all in CPU and RAM.
      Expressii's author was in its day the creator of a FABULOUS oil painting simulation (we're talking about MANY years ago!!!!), an algorithm, library or code base or however they call that that was purchased or sth, dunno if for MS, then resold to Adobe, if I remember well, don't quote me on that... He has posted around here, and said that he recognizes part of his algo in Fresco (or it's Alfresco?), de new painting app of Adobe for the iPad...I can't remember the name as I don't care about 12 inches tablets, iPads and whatnot, lol... I need my 23 inches and up screens, painting on them or not for professional work...
      I spoke to him and told him that would be amazing if he would implement that oil painting to Expressii, that a lot more buyers would be interested than only in eastern watercolor painting. IMO, watercolors already do not count on a majority of current painters (although a very large number, of western watercolor), at least, not the digital ones (most paint with that digital touch, even if painterly), let alone ask them to paint with two colors loaded in brush, and produce results non controlled (a bit like water also "paints" by itself, but in a major degree). Is a catch-22, as while he leaves it being a bit too much niche, masses won't be that much interested, and if he does not get the masses, neither the income to support further areas of development (like the oils implementation)... so, after promoting it quite in several media, I left my following of the app in stand-by, to see if at some point something changes...
      If Expressii ever gets that oil painting in, will have in me a customer, that's for sure.

However the 3d texture is less interesting than Art Set 4 again. I haven't tried artstuidio but I am really looking for realistic old school painting app. Please review art set. Thank you.

    I just tried it on my PC and found the pen pressure WAY off. I have to push very hard to make any kind of mark and it feels like half the pressure spectrum doesn't register at all. I've got a Huion tablet/pen-display but I've never had this issue in ClipStudio, Photoshop, or Sketchbook. Anyone else notice this? Is there any way to adjust it in the program without having to change my global settings? I haven't tried it on the iPad yet.

      same with me...I have an xp-pen artist 15.6 hd

      Yes, I got the same problem with my Huion. Guess it is because mine doesn't support tilt because it works fine on my windows tablet that supports it.

    Also they have to revamp the import/export options... u cant Export just the picture without canvas Textur and u cant import for example png with an Outline picture for doing just the coloring

      You can export the plain images without the canvas from the main screen. Haven't tried importing much yet.

      Color with Kurt what i mean is exporting it with opacity, like just the linework for example....

      Yeah I don't believe this is that sort of app. I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't an option for a while. Just not a focus.

      Color with Kurt its a pitty, cause i would like to draw the sketch in RPS (i like the feel of the pencils), do the inking in procreate (i like the inking there better) and then Switch again to RPS to Color there for example with watercolors,that would be perfect!

      It's just a guess on my part, but I agree with you. :)

    I got it for $12 today and it’s incredible fun. BUT... there’s no way to export/import a normal png, jpg, tff or psd image file which makes it cool, but not really useful.

    It's super buggy. I can't seem to use the pastels at all...and it pins my gpu and cpu.

    • @colorwithkurt
      @colorwithkurt  4 роки тому +1

      It requires a good gpu for sure. I didn't have any issues but I have a strong PC. I could see some devices struggling with it though. Probably not optimized well enough for some.

      @@colorwithkurt I have an I7 with 32 gigs of ram and a good GPU. I just find some of the brushes don’t work at all for me with my Wacom or work with touch (I have a 23 inch touchscreen) some won’t work with touch...some will...and the pastels won’t work at all lol..it’s hit and miss. I just updated it so might just be the update, prior to the update I couldn’t run it at all it just pinned my CPU. I’m sure in future updates it will get better. I do like what works though!! Haha

    I dont know why but when i export a jpeg from procreate and then check the size in photoshop.. it also shows 72 dpi instead of 300 although i do everything in 300 dpi in procreate

    • @iddeegee
      @iddeegee 3 роки тому

      check the resolution in pixels, the dpi is used for physical dimensions which allows you to understand the print quality vs. canvas size. For example 3000x2000px(72dpi) give you a 42x27 in. print with a bad 72dpi quality. At the same time you can get a 10x6,6in. print at 300pdi quality from 3000x2000 pixels

      It's so slow for me too! I was looking to see if it was slow for anyone else. I dont have a fast laptop though so it's a little disappointing. I'll have to try it on my iPad and see if it's faster there

    • @gusduenasArt

      @@inuloveskago on the contrary, mine has a rizen 7 1700x quad core processor, radeon rx580 8gb grafic card and 16gb ram ddr4 3000...this is not supposed to be slow. My best bet is that is probably an ipad or window tablet app that has been ported for pc or a a mac/osx app ported to pc...

      @@gusduenasArt Ah okay. I did end up getting it for the iPad instead after it kept lagging with my drawing monitor and it worked amazing there. Glad I only went for the trial on pc first. The app is actually fun with the tools, not the canvas size so much. It's disappointing that it doesn't work so well on PC because it would be so much fun on a drawing monitor since the size is bigger.
      Wonder if I can hook up my iPad to the drawing monitor lol

    great video and it indeed looks nice but 13 euro's for the app and extra 7 bucks for all the brushes is a no no for me since its pretty limited besides their pricing.... also the 2.7 user score doesn't help.

    Currently this application is nothing but a toy. The limitations are just far to restrictive for even casual use. So much promise, so broken...
