What's going on everybody?!? SeanPierceJohnson here with this week's episode of "Stompbox Saturday"! On the stompin' block this week is the Quintessence Harmony by TC Electronic.
It's been years since I owned a harmonizer pedal. Harmonizers are fun and allow one guitar to be turned into multiple voices, which can be handy for songwriting, coming up with interesting guitar parts, or even as a music theory learning tool!
In this video we'll explore some of the uses for Quintessences, the different sounds available, and a Toneprint I created for myself that will easily replace a terrible, useless bassist!

That riff is awesome ! Thanks for putting up this vid. : )
Thanks for watching! Wouldn’t be doing this without you guys.
Thank you so much! This answered pretty much all my questions about this pedal!
Glad I could help!
This is very helpful. I've had this in my pedal bin as I got a deal on it. Now I can use it! Thanks
Glad it helped! Have fun and thanks for watching
Great demo - thanks alot, I found it really useful.
Thanks Jack ✌️❤️🤘
Saul Goodman playing Guitar. Nice video!
Awesome demo. Very hard to find someone who shows properly what this can do. 😎
It’s such a good harmonizer, but I really wish they didn’t include all of the modes- anyone who has reasonable theory knowledge (the kind that will actually be exploring past straight major and minor harmony) will be able to quickly recall the relative major of whichever mode they wish to use. These TC pedals typically have 11 knob positions Max- if they had the scale knob with eleven positions: Major, Melodic Minor, Hungarian Minor, Octatonic, Whole Tone, and 6 custom slots, it would be so much more versatile! Hell- even if they kept it to 7 positions, and only gave us 2 custom slots it would be way more useful.
My thoughts exactly. The reviewer is explaining the modes like they’re are there own entity. When they’re are all starting & stoping points of major scale. Well the ones on the pedal..
You can tone print all of that ...
@@johncruz1811 Isn't the point though is to choose the mode and the interval, so the pedal, say, knows that the 4th has to be sharped in Lydian vs. non-sharped in Ionian, etc.? So if you play a note, it knows "add the #4 interval". It has nothing to do with whether you know modes, it is how the pedal knows how to add the proper interval. I have never used this pedal, just looking into it. Tell me if I am thinking about it wrong.

Key of c
C ionian or c major
CDEFGABC
F Lydian or f major
FGABCDEF
New key of g
G Ionian or G major
GABCDEF#G
C Lydian or c major
CDEF#GABC
Do you see how the Lydian mode is just a starting and stopping point on the major
key/scale. So let’s say you’re soloing in C major and you want to get the Lydian sound all you would have to do is play in the key of G major. Now let’s say you also want to add a harmony to your Lydian solo. Set it to ionian and play in G major. There are plenty of people that say you need to know each mode individually, And not to think of it from its major home. I’m not saying they’re right or wrong. but, for the instance of a small pedal with limited space, it makes sense to think of it that way. So, you can use the other slots for other exotic scales.
We’re also talking about the modes not the intervals.
Thx for the Vid, i just ordered one.. I used alot of the harmonizer on the Amplitube program. All my solos include harmonizer solos, some solos i made are completely only with Harmonizer ON. Im obsessed with doing harmonizing solo.. it sounds just fkn epic.
awesome! hope you enjoy it. thanks for watching and I hope you'll Subscribe and come back for more videos
awesome, i have not yet considered getting one, but with the last riff you played..... it's.... interesting, and like you said, there is a learning curve
Definitely a learning curve. Some pedals are that way, you can’t grasp the full usage right away but you can get the basics. Time will tell how this plays into the collection. It’s still great fun though
Great video. Thanks for explaining the music theory behind this. Was the pedal in front of the amp or in effects loop?
thanks so much! glad to explain the theory. I always put harmonizer/pitch shifter FIRST in my chain. So from Guitar to pitch pedal. In my experience this gets you the most accurate harmonizing and pitch shifting.
I never run stuff like this in the loop...but that's just me
Great demo. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great thing about the 5th is doesn’t matter what key you select. Also the toneprints are great. I put octaves in mine. Eliminates the need for an octave pedal.
True. Though I have found it can be a bit touchy. There was a firmware update a short while after I got mine but then TC redesigned their website and I couldn't find it anymore.
Except for the 7th note of the major scale which needs a flat 5th.
Sean Pierce... Cool Guy....Met at th amp show Oct 2019. Thanks for what you do Sean ! Greg J
thanks for watching Greg! glad we got to meet in person
Can anybody explain what difference the mode knob makes compared to just setting the pedal for the relative major key, or is this just a wasted knob?
would this pedal be good for the Allman Brothers type harmony riffs they used to do ?
Hop Zombie!! Good to see a great New Zealand beer getting represented! Epic is way too tasty.
I actually got that shirt when I visited New Zealand last year. I even got to have beers with Luke Nicholas himself! It was a fantastic trip and I can’t wait to go back. 👍
And yes, Epic beers are fantastic!
That's awesome! Also enjoyed the video but definitely had hops on my mind the whole time hahahah, very informative!
This is freaking badass 🤘👹🤘
Are those delay intervals near the end a Tone Print or did you use a delay pedal? This would be trippy paired with my Echolution 2 Ultra Pro.
Thanks.
I achieved those through the Toneprint app. You can adjust a small delay time of the two harmonized notes to create the cascading effect.
Thank You. Logical knob layou, momentary is great
What is the max the pitch shifted note can be delayed (setting adjustable inside the software) thanks!
Can’t remember unfortunately
Can I use this pedal just to play music, improvise, without focusing on scales, please ? Or will go out of tune ?🙏
Unbelievably I was riddled because intervals didn't suit at all...
The # latch was set to normal but my guitar was tuned in Eb.
After watching this video it all made sense all of a sudden; major thanks! (see what I did there ghehehe)
Thanks Sean my question is on the early queen recordings what was the most common interval that Brian May used with his Eventide Harmonizers please?
Hey Will,
I'm not much of a Brian May expert but I know he often threw Thirds into his harmonies. I also hear fifths and sixths in his harmonies as well.
If anyone who sees this knows more than I do about Brian May's tone please do chime in!
- Sean
SeanPierceJohnson aw thank you Sean I first got interested in Brian Mays sound around Night At The Opera so I ended up getting a Rocktron Intelefex
I have been chasing Brian Mays harmonies ever since
I’m not a Brian May expert by any means, but I have heard and replicated the guitar tracks of Bohemian Rhapsody. On that song he doesn’t use a harmonizer-he plays the individual parts. And they aren’t simple intervals. Some of the harmonies rise when the melody falls or vice-versa. So it wouldn’t be possible to exactly replicate with a harmonizer.
Bob Carroll I have seen dr. Mays rig along time ago right around Night at the opera and he had multiple Eventide Harmonizers so I guess I will always lean to the h9 series of pedals although I do love tc electronic on the subject of guitar tracking I definitely understand the concept of layering tracks
Hi, thanks for share this great video tutorial, i noticed you record both tracks of the Quintessence (original tone and harmonized), i want it to record both lines at once to avoid make 2 diferent guitar lines, scales etc. How do you notice the fast tracking lines, licks, fast scales pasages, good job ? any tone sucking ?.. thx for ur answer
Hi Giovanni,
So I’m going to answer as best I can. I do record both at the same time using the Blend/Mix control on the pedal. I don’t think you can send the Dry guitar to one output and the harmony to the other.
As far as I notice, the audio tracks very well. I don’t have many issues outside of the pitches not being in the selected keys.
As far as tone suck I didn’t notice any.
Awesome guitar playing 👏👏👏👏
at 7:10 you on the 5th you mention Owner of a Lonely Heart. i'm also hearing Prince's When Doves Cry. cool demo, i'm almost sold on this!
thanks Tim!
What are the „key” and „scale” knobs for? He turns them but it is him who plays in these different scales and keys, not the pedal.
Have you tried using the momentary feature while playing Fleetwood Macs Albatross?
I don’t know how to play Albatross so no I havent
Can this pedal support two signal outputs? I want to send one signal to an amp another to a PA
Do you mean like sending a dry signal to one output and a harmony to the other?
I wonder how it copes with slide guitar in standard tunings? And say, if you finger two notes a third apart, what the harmoniser makes of it?
harmonizers GENERALLY don't harmonize with more than one not. some may be there but I haven't played them
hi, im about to get one. will this work with a multieffect pedal? like if i put this in front/behind the multieffect will i get desired sound?
whatever you do with it, i would put it at the beginning of the pedal chain always. pitch shifting and harmony pedals are much better at the front of your chain so the effect has as true of a signal from your guitar as possible
@@SeanPierceJohnson i see! thanks so much!! :)
It’s nice to see a guitarist who actually knows their theory.
Thanks 👍 hope the video was helpful
Gonna play some Thin Lizzy with this
very appropriate!
Great playing. what do you think is better brainwaves or Quintessence?
Thanks Anthony. I haven't tried the Brainwaves so I can't compare it to Quintessence.
Is the knob with just major based scales redundant if you already have a key knob ?
(C major (ionian) = D dorian = E phrygian =F lydian = G myxolydian = A aeolian = B (nobody cares ;))
Would be nice if they had used that knob for some alternative scales :)
Hi can you tell us your settings for the harp like effect at the end?
man, I made this video three years ago...i have no idea what I did.
what I can tell you is you have to use the Toneprint editor to make it happen...you can mess with the delay times of the harmonized pitches.
Little Nicky Rocking out!
But those are my roommate's pedals!
does it works to down tune a half tone or a tune and a half?
I’m sure you could make something to do that effect as a TonePrint but that’s a job probably better suited for the Brainwaves pitch shifter that TC makes.
Good Video
Thank you 🙏
great !
thanks my friend
. . . good nice, nice!
15:39 OMG faaaaaaaaaaccccckkkkk that tone is incredible
you look like Zohan from you don't mess with Zohan
but...Zohan had a goatee and his hair was MUCH MORE silky smooth
So I picked one of these up about a month ago and I haven't had time to explore it much. I need a proper Whammy Toneprint. Apparently, that's actually quite tricky to achieve with this. There is a 5th^ "Nerd Whammy" but that isn't +1/+2 effect that I need for that song - the one that every covers band in the world plays (you know the one...)
*sigh* shoulda kept my Pitchfork.
Apart from that, based on my limited experience with it I would say: it's AWESOME for the three scales/modes I can play and this is, as always, a cool demo. I wanna stack it with my Micro POG and/or Boss MO-2 then into Boss Tera Echo. That is gonna be...interesting. Opamp Muff for gain.
To wit: ua-cam.com/video/-GYlPyAgASg/v-deo.html
I literally know no theory at all (apart from chord shapes and scale shapes- *as* shapes, tho, not as harmonic relations) which is why I love this pedal. It's great for dumb guys like me, it does 5/6 of the thinking for you.
What's a Super Locrian? A new Marvel film?
I think Super Locrian is a Phase 5 Marvel movie...😆
I'll be dead by then!
"Lean On Me"! Lol
Had to do it
some of you fast playing "tracking" sounds like the old Les Paul stuff he used to do when he would layer his stuff while playing live.
Dig it 👍 love me some good ol’ Les Paul
18:15
; )
Without midi and being able to pull up presets most pedals are one trick ponies once they are on the floor! Knobs should also be able to be locked once your tone is found!
🎮Mario
big voice: cigarettE?
Um...what?
I find the brainwaves alot better than this
Haven’t gotten the chance to try that yet
Aeolian is minor
yeah...that's what i said
I'd rather listen to a chain saw then this immature "drivel"
your vibrato needs work...
so you're telling me you wouldn't make silly/extreme vibrato with one of these sounds just to have some fun?
