Timo achieved something very, very rare in TT. For any Chinese national player or anybody to go through the top 3 Chinese players in one tournament is s......o tough. I don't recall anybody did that in the 40mm ball era. Too bad, Boll failed to win the WTTC Single title. Boll and Ma Lin are the 2 players that should have won at least one WTTC world champion. The world needs more Timo Boll level TT players.
It was a fluke because the Chinese team was jet lagged.He could beat Wang Liqin but he hardly ever beat Ma Lin and was pretty useless against Wang Hao.Now beating them back to back...He did lose in the group stage to Samsonov and failed in that year same year to Smirnov at the European Championship.The closer to beating them back to back was Ryu Seung Min in 2007 without even having a coach alongside him.

Timo Boll's style of playing is versatile, but requires speed. He had speed in his young time, and he really was the best in the world at that time. But now his age does not allow speed. Take a comparison with Samsonov. The Samsonov's style of playing demands less speed, and is more safety, but is not versatile. Samsonov always plays stable, but was never really the best player in the world in his best time. At the German Open 2016, Timo Boll lost vs Samsonov.
