  • Contacting some PMR446 stations on Channel 8 from the first location in this series. Today I'm on Broadoak Hill in South Bristol.
    Radio - geni.us/rt98 (UHF variant)
    Magmount - bit.ly/327mDtG
    Antenna - bit.ly/339gYCv
    I'm not an amateur radio operator but I love testing out radio gear and have always enjoyed trying out different locations to see where they can reach the best. I'm using CH08 which is the calling channel for PMR446.
    Thanks to everyone who I spoke to during the filming of this video. It was great to get a few contacts and I hope to speak to you all again in the future.
    Thanks also to @Ringway Manchester who gave me the idea for this format. He does a very similar thing in the North-West of the UK except he's much, much better at it than me!
    Thanks for watching.

    The radio used in this test is the tiny RT98 - geni.us/rt98 --- If you enjoyed the test and would like to support the channel, please use this affiliate link to check out the RT98 on Amazon. Thank you!

      Glad you found it and good to talk to you back in the summer of 2020. There’s not much opportunity to get on the 446 at the moment with lockdown as I only have a radio in the car. I’m hoping to do more like this in future.

    You did well indeed 😊. I've recorded some foreign transmissions on 446 on my SDR setup during what seemed to be atmospheric openings, they would fade at times and sounded like US police chatter, no idea why, cool nevertheless.

      @@tdcattech no worries dear friend. I recently purchased a little Baofeng radio. The UV-5R, well I actually bought two for under £40. And I must admit they are great rugged little radios. I also use a magmount antenna for the car, and what a difference in range. I'm also studying for my ham license which is very interesting. Anyway from our home to yours, 73 my friend. Paul.

    Hi, what radio is that you are using in the car? Is it 0.5 watt?

  • @christophersmith1155
    @christophersmith1155 8 місяців тому

    I WISH FRS/GMRS WAS MORE POPULAR HERE IN THE USA. EUROPE HAS 0.5 or 1/2 OF A WATT. WE ARE ALLOWED 2 WATTS AND COULD REALLY BENEFIT AND ENJOY IT WITHOUT A LICENSE. ON GMRS WE ARE ALLOWED 5 WATTS ON CHANNELS 1-7 AND 50 WATTS ON CHANNELS 15-22 WITH A LICENSE.

    Hi is pmr going that distance,and as far as I know,you can't get a magmount antenna for pmr, you must be breaking the law by using a ham radio or something similar,this is not a true test of the pmr frequency.

    Nice little Badboy Radio, What Power does it have , Variable?

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  3 роки тому

      5W, 10W and 15W. I've measured the power output into a dummy load and it's pretty accurate. It gets pretty hot on 5W so I can imagine that regular 15W use would create huge heat unless controlled somehow.

      PMR 446Mhz is limited to 0.5Watts. it usually works around 2km. But it can work long distance based on line of sight. if you stand on a high hill, you can reach far.
