Everything happened as it had to happen. I mean, Gordon Raphael did a very good job on Is This It, but I highly doubt he would have produced Up The Bracket well. Mick Jones hit the nail on the head and managed to help The Libertines define their sound for good. From what I have been able to notice in all the sources I have obtained, The Libertines took a long time to find their sound, they had not defined their concept since the late 90s and I think they needed the guitarist from The Clash to do it. Mick Jones simply had to be the producer of Up The Bracket and he delivered an excellent job. Finally, I would like to add a point of view that seems curious to me: The Libertines would not have existed without The Strokes, but I think that The Libertines' proposal ended up being more honest and pure. For me, both bands are complementary and I think they were the best of the 2000s garage rock revival scene.
Love Gordon but glad he never produced the Libs, would have made them come across more like a strokes wannabe band imo. I adore the ramshackle sound of up the bracket but I think Bernard Butler did a great job with the tracks he did with them too
To be honest there's just no comparison between the libertines and the strokes. The libertines were like a drug addled meteor burning up in the earth's atmosphere at a 1000mph while the strokes was like a self conscious bedford van rattling down the road at milk float speed No comparison.
I know everyone has their own opinion but Jesus mate! That first album is the best album of the last 25 years! Is this it is perfect but up the bracket is much more!
You're both right imo, first album were mostly songs that they put together to appease record labels, not their true sound. I love that album and think it's a masterpiece, but at the same time recognise that it's a tad fake and manufactured to be the "British strokes", the original version of bucket shop is a testament to their original sound, and anthems for doomed youth the only time they've effectively used that sound for libertine releases.
The Strokes and The Libertines were almost the only two bands I listened to in 2001 -2005. Saw The Libs live in Chicago in 2004. I was impressed with how tight the band sounded. I was reading Q magazine and they described them as "London's answer to The Strokes". Before all that, I saw the video for "Last Night" and thought I saw a baby Iggy Pop lol. That was the last great rock Renaissance in my opinion. When The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Black Angels came into light they were on that list too. I'm still waiting for something to happen.
Such a great guy - working with him was one of my favourite sessions

There are countless versions/variations of the libs progression on tape. Definitely a roughness but thats the charm

No comparison.
