You're on a roll, excellent work! The Apple II Community owes you a debt of gratitude, even more so than before!! :)
We heard you, it sounded bad, so we reviewed the sound f/x. You can find an updated version of Space Ace @ www.brutaldeluxe.fr/products/apple2gs/spaceace/ - We will update the Dragon's Lair series if the fix is successful.
THIS IS CRAZY! Are there any write-ups about how you guys managed to rewrite this? And what version were you using for the Dragon's Lair games!?
The ports are based on PC Dos VGA version of Dragon's Lair and Space Ace games. For Dragon's Lair game (the first one) we took the art + sound from the Amiga and Atari ST versions because the DOS version was EGA only.
Is there a technical write up somewhere where you talk about the technology you put into these?
Awesome! I remember buying this on 8 floppy disks but it was too unwieldy to play. Plus, the tearing of the animation made it undesirable to play. Did you fix the blitting to get rid of the tearing, or did you just run it accelerated?
Some scenes play nicely at 2.8MHz, others need an accelerator. Our version is not related to the Readysoft version, so no fix had to be done.
Original came on 9 floppy disks, not 8, but the biggest improvement with this re-issue port is the fluidity of game play! Not talking about the frame rate/video tearing....I mean the video isn't interrupted EVERY scene with that annoying card showing your current score & lives. That improvement alone makes it worthwhile checking out!
On the one hand its awesome, on the other hand, I die a bit inside every time I hear crappy ACE audio coming from the Ensoniq...
Lack of memory probably to make the full use of the Ensoniq
@@alexandertwose2581 - Here's the original IIGS port from 1990 as comparison (note the much higher quality audio). ua-cam.com/video/El4VG5c0EU4/v-deo.html
The poor Audio quality is linked to the compression used in the PC DOS release where we grabbed the game data (it's a 4 bit resolution instead of 8 bit, so the compression rate is 50%). The audio sampling rate is also pretty low (mosty around 8 Khz, few around 11 Khz).
There is no ACE involved. As Olivier wrote, the sound quality of the PC version is low.
@@alexandertwose2581 There is no relation to memory usage. As Olivier wrote, the sound quality of the PC version is low.
