    Without defending this technique or the rider (just to clarify some translation errors in the Beerbaum statement) ...
    The FEI said that planks/poles with edges, nails etc. are forbidden. Beerbaum claims to use "touching" with a round stick which is in accordance with the FEI guidelines. So the FEI did not contradict Beerbaum's statement (if he really used a round pole as he claims he did). Touching is actually allowed. And the "four times a year" were just touching, not pling/rapping (if you believe Beerbaum).
    Beerbaum claims that the poles shown in the shed were for their fences or were sorted out and not used in training. Think of that what you will ...
    My horse is at a stable were young horses are trained for higher class show jumping. Weirdly I have never seen anyone crouching behind jumps and "touching" the horses. Yet they jump really well, enjoy what they are doing and they are getting a lot of prizes ... So I don't agree with Beerbaum's "every show jumper does it" and I don't believe that it is necessary to use that technique. Be it touching or rapping. It is not fair to the horse, even if it should prove to be not harmful or causing injuries. You are cheating your partner into thinking that the horse made a mistake. Why would you want that?

      @Alicia Aa Yes, it should be banned. I don't see the point in that method. Either the horse is careful on its on or it should not be used in jumping competitions. I bought my horse for jumping, but it turned out that it was not her specialty. So we only jump for fun when she wants to (she will walk up to a hurdle and stare at it, if she wants to jump. And she is VERY persistent at that).

      "Touching" is used to protect the quilt. They no more touch the horse than an extremely twisted bit doesn't cut into a horses mouth. They smack the crap out of those horses. If a horse doesn't have the natural talent to jump the higher jumps (as you pointed out), get a different horse that does.

      @@janets6474 As long as LDR remains an acceptable technique as long as it is done for 10 minutes or less, "Touching" will be allowed, too, I fear ... I myself have witnessed such cruelty. I was in Lake Placid years ago, watching Grand Prix horse show jumping (just after Barney Ward went to jail for cruelty to animals). There was a break, so I started wandering around the grounds. I noticed someone practicing in a warm-up ring. As I got closer, I was astonished at what I saw. McClain Ward was schooling a jumper over fences. There was a person on the ground with a metal rod, smacking the horse on the stomach every time he went over a jump. I was young when this happened. If I saw this today, I would do the same thing. Take a secret video, then go right up to them and give them a thrashing. How would they like getting smacked in the belly?! This was over 20 years ago. Just think of the number of horses abused in this way and all those who participated without saying a word. This guy isn't the only one who should face charges. Those who stand idly by or help in the abuse should face charges as well

I don't know how many of you remember the stink that Anky Van Grunsven made over her being filmed using Rollkur on a training horse and then it being leaked! If they were training on the up and up, they would welcome visitors all the time to marvel at their outstanding training skills.

      They used to use hedgehog skins on the poles , I shudder to think what they have in the bandages or if they even use electrical shocks. These horses do their upmost never to touch a fence.
      I think most of us can see a genuine piaffe or one that has been developed with more than a helping touch.

      How exactly can you see this?

  • @claudia273
    @claudia273 3 роки тому +18

    These are the moments I really truly hate our community.
    The way a lot of people react to this is just disgusting. Maybe even worse than what Ludger did.
    Don't get me wrong, I detest him for doing this. First of all, I do not understand why in hell 'touching' is allowed.
    It is simply abusive. Maybe not physically. The average showjumper might hit his/her horse harder with their whips. (not that that's not abusive btw..)
    But mostly the mental aspect of it is not just unethical, but simply cruel. It's misleading/decieving/befooling your horse. Who thought they did good at that jump, who put all of their effort into the jump, tried their hardest to please the rider. It's just a big FU to your horse..
    But what I don't understand, and might despise even more are all the "Oh, this happens everywhere"-people. Honestly, if I would've ever seen any proof of it, I would've taken my phone out immediately and film every single bit of it.
    And NO, it does NOT happen everywhere. I can name 20 showjumpers who I know for certain do not do this. And I don't even know many showjumpers.. But i've seen enough of their terrain, trainings, talked long and extentively with them about methods in the equestrian sport, that I can say with 100% certainty they won't do this.
    And again, NO, a great jumper isn't always barred somewhere in their lives. Someone who thinks this probably has never had a actual great modern jumper (since the beginning of his life obviously..). Some really are that careful.
    And sure, I'm not even nearly naive enough to think he's the only one who does this. In some way it might even be legal.. I doubt it, a simple calculation shows chances are big that stick weights more than 2kg. But that doesn't make this less despicable.
    I won't say anything about those pointy poles, I don't even have words for that kind of cruelty.
    I just hope the FEI and FN, and maybe the german government, can come up with an actual punishment. Not some fine he has to pay. Just give him a ban for life.. It's not that difficult.
    At this point I wouldn't even mind if they ban all 'professional horseriding'. It's the money that causes this, and it simply is impossible to get the money out of the game. So lets just take the game away. I honestly do not know what else could work.

    • @mdee860

      @Claudia - So well written & expressed Claudia. 👍👏👏👏 The FEI needs to come into the 22nd century. Changes need to be implemented ASAP, in regard to: types of bits allowed, banning double reins, a total ban on Rolkur training, a ban on any type of Poling, (or tapping - whatever you want to call it) mandatory daily turnout & weekly days off for all Show/Competative Horses & zero Spurs allowed. These horses give their all, but sadly, most are abused. The big shame is that many riders/trainers STILL don't think they're being abusive (Dinosaurs 🦕) & continue to train the next impressionable generation to think their Old School ways are actually good. I can no longer watch Jumping, Dressage shows, the Triple Crown races & even the Decathalon in the Olympics! I simply can't support cruelty of any type. Until the FEI changes the rules, I hold them equally as responsible for the abuse to horses, as I do the trainers, etc. Finally, why is the FEI so opposed to "Bitless" riders? To me, that should be a rider's choice & shows true partnership between horse & rider. Fear induced training is despicable.

    • @janets6474
      @janets6474 3 роки тому +5

      Well said!! The only fitting punishment is banning them from ever showing again. With these strict standards, it will certainly make most people think twice before trying such cruelty. If the general horse population begins to have too much difficulty in negotiating higher, wider jumps, maybe it would be wiser to scale back the jumps. I remember many years ago ( unfortunately, I date myself here) when they used to jump ditches on event courses. But too many horses and riders were getting seriously hurt or dying, so they stopped using them.
      Time for radical changes for equestrians who are seemingly out of control. Accountability is necessary for riders, trainers, owners, participants and the overarching show officials who allow it to continue.

It's teaching and does no harm!

    • @AQG_Arts
      @AQG_Arts 3 роки тому +3

      @@samgolestanian9186 Oh, I've been waiting for someone to say something like this!
      First of all:
      You use a leash on your dog to protect yourself and others. You may trust that dog, but law states that it must be on leash. Why? Because dogs are a predatory animal, and they will go after anything, including children. If you want proof, in 2016(?), a young child was attacked by a dog, unprovoked. In 2017-2018 (one of the two), a woman was attacked by two dogs, unprovoked. In 2019, a woman was walking her dog, low and behold, they were attacked. Unprovoked. I could go on.
      Secondly:
      The animals used in casts have multiple ways to be trained. Yes, a lot can be abused, however the majority are not. Take the way Dan James trains his horses. Nothing but trust between them both. The horses used in liberty usually are trained with positive reinforcement. Rewarding the animal when it does something with a treat, slowly working to a pat. There are ground rules, but it's just the body language a horse would use, placed on the human body. Nothing that hasn't been seen before in the wild basically. Yes, as stated before, some horses receive abuse to get them to do what they want, but that number is minor, as I am sure they have to have their style approved by vets.
      To add on, yes dolphin shows are cruel. Cruel in a lot of ways. But here's the difference; dolphins are wild. They were never domesticated. You know what was? That's right, the horse. Good job on guessing that one!
      Finally:
      This IS abuse. You must live under a rock, because this is just abuse, and it's abuse in such a clear form, even a non-horse person could see it.
      How fucking dare you accuse me of not understanding these things, when I first hand know what goes on! For starters, I own a rescue horse, taken from the racing industry. That horse was so damn wound up from what they did, it was extremely hard to calm him down. Second of all, I have seen worse cases from this, and let me tell you now, this is an amazing way to BREAK your horse. Not the breaking in, but the breaking of a soul, of a mind. Yes! This isn't abuse! It's a great way to traumatise an animal.
      Stay in your lane del, and never tell me I don't know that something isn't what it is, cause I've got experience behind me that can tell me, and others, otherwise.

      @@samgolestanian9186 I am not sure about the last part. That is still for the court to decide, if it was teaching or abuse. And as up to me, I think they should ban this method entirely. Horses usually don't want to crash into bars/poles, so they will jump high enough themselves. I don't see the necessity for this type of teaching.

    This is a practice that's been done over 30 years.its not animal abuse,when the horse jumps you put a thiner pole behind the original pole so that the horse hits it and then you come at the jump again and the horse will put more effort.it is not done with every horse just the ones not showing respect for the jump.people need to get over this self rightiousness of judging everything they don't like as bad. unfortunately anytime an animal is being used for any kind of performance there will be instances were in one way or another it will be forced to do what's being asked.itd no different than a parent enforcing their authority and will over their children.

      No, I am at a jumping stable, they don't use that technique. I have never seen anyone using that (except in those videos). The trainer at my stable learned her job from one of the top German riders. So I hope that said rider does not "touch" or "pole" or whatever you wanna call it, his horses (I don't know though). I know the rider is using some shady sales tactics though (exaggerating the riding education a horse got etc.)

    There is a difference between teaching and abusing. Beerbaum is teaching! Same as dressage riders where they teach a horse to lift their legs by tapping with a stick. I am an animal lover and I respect those who fight animal abuse but what i'm seeing in this video is not abuse.

      A dressage reader teaching a horse to piaffe for example is different. The tap on the bum and half halt is a CUE to tell the horse what to do. When a horse is going over a jump and the pole hits him, thats not a cue. You aren’t teaching a horse to pick up his legs what you are doing is teaching a horse to not trust his judgment and get overly stressed.

    • @drmorgan2101
      @drmorgan2101 2 роки тому

      I agree, also people should realize that horses often hit plain wooden poles on their own accord, sometimes causing injury. In fact it is imperative for a horse to learn by hitting a few poles by mistake, this will teach him to be careful. For instance I can ride to a deep take-off distance and cause the horse to bump a pole which makes him more alert. Yes, some are abusive with this practice and should not be allowed to continue, however Ludgar doesn't appear to be doing this in a mean, aggressive manner.
