England top Group C at Euro 2024 and progress to the final 16 after a disappointing 0-0 performance against Slovenia.
In a tense match in Munich, Denmark secured a runners-up spot in Group C, progressing to the knockout stage and knocking Serbia out of the competition. Both teams had disallowed goals in what was a nervy game.
James Richardson joined by Jay Harris and Tom Williams to analyse the 12th day at the Euros 2024.

Holy fucking sound leveling batman
Picking a few cases of bad group stages ending in great tournaments is the highest logical fallacy, basically picking the 5% of times it happens, more often than not the teams terrible in the group stages stink it up later and get dumped out
Love y’all, but these audio issues from live reporting is atrocious.
Southgate also managing the audio levels in this podcast.
Production and sound are as poor as England's performance.

I honestly can't see England even getting past Holland let alone winning the tournament, this will be a repeat of Euro 2016 with England getting knocked out in the last 16, can't wait to see it 😁
Unrelated to the game. Question is why commentators keep talking about games they are not directly involved in? I had intended to watch Poland France after watching Austria Netherlands, but commentators kept on updating that game…so there was no point watching it. I’ve been noticing this for ages. Why do they insist on commenting on other games? It’s frustrating.

I get this being annoying but at the same time in a situation like this, standing of another game can affect teams in the other group and what they need to qualify so it is very much so relevant information for a viewer to know
@@allandavids9284 it doesn’t just happen in these situations though. Premier league has been shocking in doing this in recent years. I’m on the other side of the world so the matches usually occur while I’m sleeping and I have to work out which order to watch matches in so not to get the result of the other match or two I was planning to watch. It isn’t the most pressing thing in the game to whinge about right now I agree, but it does frustrate me when it happens. More so because it means that I haven’t planned it. But at the same time, they are not supposed to commentate on the game they are at? Just annoying 😆. I didn’t watch the Poland France game because of it. Sorry broadcaster.
Because the result in the other game directly affects what is happening in the game they are commentating on. I do understand your frustration though. I’ve gotten better at watching two games at the same time
Because probably less than 0.1% of viewers actually do that, and the 99.9% of viewers who don't do that appreciate the updates.
We kept the ball better, admittedly against Slovenia, just looked a little blunt in the final third. Something’s gotta change in that front 3. Foden needs dropping or moving central.
yeah players with Champion League league winner medals and youth world and Euro cup winners medals are not average. I know the haters are going to jump on this bandwagon as an opportunity to falsely claim England have terrible players. Southgate has been coach for 8 years and for a team to play like that with no plan or organisation, Southgate must truly be one of the worst coaches in the world. England were never going to win anything with him and silver lining in all this, is England have played so bad and exposed what a terrible coach Southgate is, that the FA will be forced to withdraw the contract they wanted to extend his job to the next World Cup and the fact they wanted to give him an extension shows how little the English FA know about football
If we meet a decent team, kane dropping will be marked out of the game. Therell be no outball, no running in behind. Unless southgate changes formation to 4-1-4-1 and picks the right players we are going to be seriously undone.

You know these guys only work in the Premier League when they call a thrown beer on the pitch a security issue.
James Richardson really famously covered Serie A and lived in Italy for like a decade...
Plus lobbing anything on the pitch is classed as a security risk, it's why some countries have massive nets up. Don't really see what the Premier League has to do with it either, this sort of thing never normally happens at the Euros in general so it doesn't really matter how much shit gets thrown on the pitch in whatever leagues you're referring to.

The concerning thing about all of this is everyone can see what the issues are, fans and pundits alike, but the Manager seems unwilling to address them (other than who plays next to Rice). His changes during the game are improving, but he needs to get it right from the start and that means addressing the Foden/Bellingham question NOW, getting a left footer on the left side in Gordon to start with. Our left side is a mess and its been a massive mistake not to bring a fit left back. Who knew?

That's not Southgate managing England, its Moyes wearing a Southgate mask! just look at the way that he's running the same 11 players into the ground whilst ignoring most of the talent bench. Playing half of the team out of position, the negative football, being happy with a draw against lesser teams when they should be dominating them. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE play a proper left wing. Foden, Trippier isn’t working. Jude and Foden’s average position was basically exactly the same.
Southgate played the same starting 11 (minus 1) 3 games in a row when he said they had fitness issues is INSANE. They all looked gassed. Jude needed a rest. Kane needed a rest. Trippier and Walker needed a rest. Saka needed a rest. Rice needed a rest. Stones is injury prone and just played 3 90s in 9 days.
If Trent, Mainoo and palmer play on the RHS, it will be beautiful and there will be so many chances.
you realise that average position doesn't mean they were there at the same time right?
not saying this is what you're doing but people seem to want our players to stay in their own little spaces and never move from them. "your a left winger, so stay on the left and run in behind for the long ball" perfect.
ignore the fact that we don't move the ball quickly enough and our off ball movement is awful and the rotations aren't good enough. but the answer is to play long ball football to get the ball behind a low block... great idea.
but your points about fitness are spot on they all look way off the pace. it was obvious before the tournament that Kane, Saka, Trippier were all going to start despite lacking game time and coming off the back of injuries, and that Bellingham was carrying an injury through the end of the season and played up until two weekends before the tournament started.
way better use of subs needed and a bit of rotation in the starting line up. but becuase he's got in a mess about the 'first choice' team and it's not working he's obviously desperately trying to keep the same players together and hope it starts clicking.

The managers who coach Saka, Foden, Rice and Bellingham are all elite coaches who know how to get the best out of their players, because they're on their level. Southgate clearly isn't on their level which is why they perform so badly. Or what Southgate is asking them to do is so dull and the antithesis of how they normally play that they seem disjointed. Kane is clearly not doing well at all and always looked tired at tournaments after the season has finished. Bench him for someone with some legs.
France were utterly abysmal in their group games in 2018, I’d never seen a top side look so shoddy and scrappy

Perhaps it's Gareth's strategy to play baffling and confusing football without revealing any strengths, so stronger opponents later on will simply have no clue whatsoever how to face them. 🥸
