You would think so but nah it ducks it’s damn head. Dunno why he reckons our blades aren’t one piece. All the mowers sold here including hustlers they all have a fixed blade
I have reservations over how thin the metal is compared to the standard blade you showed. The ability to flex should make up for a lot of that, but only time will tell on the longevity and if it’s cost effective or not. The one thing I know for sure is it’s a guessing game until you try them. Thanks for checking them out for us and I look forward to your long term opinions 🤠
Aussie here, who has not really known anything except this kind of blade, in push mowers at least. Yes, the metal seems kind of thin on this product. The swivel blades under most lawn mowers here are attached to a more substantial centre piece than what this product appears to offer
I used the Meg-mo system on my John Deere 54 inch deck for years. Absolutely loved them. When I sharpened them I made sure I balanced the blades in twos and cross matched them. They were a good solid system!
The small blades on the corners remind me of the small razor-style blades that you can find on robotic mowers. That being said, I have been doing a lot of excavation digging projects around my property and have a lot of stones that I keep hitting with my existing mower blades (John Deere X728) and I don't want to launch a stone through a window or at my house, so I may look at picking these up.. Mowing season is wrapping up where I live, so I may hold off until next spring, but I'm definitely looking forward to your long term opinions in the future.
Thanks for the review. Looked impressive so I went to their site and ordered 3 for my 54" Hustler zero turn. Ridiculous price at $347.00 shipped but I figured why not. First off there was no place on the order page to put a discount code. Secondly after a full week I still had no ship date, tracking / number so I called and after pushing several buttons I finally spoke to "Leroy". Oh he said....it says on the page these are special order and take 4 - 5 weeks to arrive. I said there was no such thing on their website or I wouldnt have ordered them. I said cancel my order since you already charged my credit card and refund the card. Oh he said....I have no means to do that but I can send you a check. I said ok, when will the check be sent. In a week he said as the "secretary" doesnt work every day. So these clowns have zero idea how to properly run a business and are a real pita to deal with. Now I have to dispute the charge on my card and hope I do in fact eventually get said refund check. Just a heads up for anyone thinking of dealing with these knuckleheads......
Howdy Brock! Interesting mower blade. I have the same kind of yard, mixture of grasses and clover. If I let it get too high I have the same issue with not getting an even cut. I have to use what I call the 'overlap method' lol. Each pass is 50% new and the other 50% overlapping the previous cut. Takes longer, but I enjoy being out on the tractor and I'm only mowing 3 acres. Probably wouldn't need to do it like that as often if I would sharpen my blade lol. 😆 Well done and thanks for sharing 🤠
On the push mower I have seen the crank shaft bend when hitting an object with a straight blade, never seen that with a disc and swing blade, even some rideon mowers here in Australia use the disc with a swing blade, I prefer them for cutting lawn.
Well, didn't work for me on my EGO push mower. Gave it the ol' college try, but the blades were too heavy (even though it wasn't supposed to be an issue). Back to the blade it came with. :)
I'm 53 now but, when I was 8 & worked for my Uncles Mowing Business. I was taught to walk the property before you cut it. **I'm curious what happens to the Plate section that hits something? Aussie here and yep... blades on most gas-powered centrifugal push and self-propelled mowers all have swivel blades for the exact reason you mentioned; reduces the transfer of energy onto any object big enough to become a dangerous projectile, as well as protecting the blades and the drivetrain from sudden hard impact. Most ride mowers here have fixed blades... just ask the windscreen on my large Tractor. The rock it took from my 52inch zero-turn was a $2500 exercise. That was an expensive day's mowing. I'll think be grabbing a set of these.
@@Daniel-qe8qe Blades create suction and air flow. Air flow is what stripes. Most commercial zero turns do not have stripe rollers and still lay amazing stripes... due to the air flow from the blades
I like it! I'd think that as long as you use them on "good" lawns that have no big rocks, roots, curbs, stumps, etc, they should do very well. With four blades it should give a better finish, in theory.
Same style as the disc mower that is used on some farms. Used one a few times, they worked good. They did take a bit more power, but they cut in any direction that the hay was laying. I helped change a few of the blades, problem with that was everything was worn down from sandy soil and rough terrain. I designed a system for my lawnmower to use the same setup, but never did build it.
Hey Brock, I've stuck with the high lift blades on my Toro Z-master 54". But I've noticed mulcher Blades are much quieter. Did you notice more or less noise with this set-up?
Are you still liking the cutlass blades. Not many people talking about them….. how are they on finish mowing…..I’ll be using them on a couple taken care of yards. TIA GEORGE
I'm a landscaper in Rhode Island USA. Most of my customers lawns haircut weekly or bi-weekly. My goal is to have the clippings be so fine that it looks like the grass has been bagged. Do you think these blades can accomplish that?
You are correct with changing your blades from one to four that swivel. I went through 3 single blades within a few months. I changed to a four blade system and never looked back.
When I was a kid my grandfather had a push mower with two of them blades on the one he had so they where here back about 50 years ago I. Remember it clearly because I had never seen them before then
I know it was already stated in the video, but I'm gonna say anyway that Australia has used a similar design for years on push mowers. No bent cranks from hitting posts and stumps in the ground and you don't normally bother sharpening your blades - opting for just buying a new set and bolting them on. You can sharpen them if you want though.
I like the windrows! Makes it easy to collect with my tractor and a rake to add nitrogen to my compost pile! Same with small branches and dry leaves! Run them through my chipper and put them in the compost pile; they add carbon to the nitrogen rich grass clippings. Mix in the non-meat kitchen waste, water and turn every week and I get high quality composted soil gor my garden.
Wow, you really did a number to that blade. That must have been one hell of a rock. I guess that’s the price you pay cutting areas that you aren’t familiar with at new job sites. I’d be interested to see how these hold up long term. I use my lx2610 to cut farm lanes and pastures, but I like the finished look the belly mower on it provides. Only downside is I have to cut more often, but it prevents me from needing to borrow my grandfathers older JD 2040/4020 (cant remember which configuration the numbers are in), along with his brush hog. Interesting mowing technique, I’m more of a parallel line look, going opposite directions to create a poor mans stripe golf course look. Either way, these look interesting, if they hold up better then my Kubota blades and my Dixie Chopper zero turn blades, the Dixie blades wear out so quickly, so any improvement would be great. Thanks again for exposing us to all these interesting products Brock. Great content as always 👍
The blade tips on both this and megmo are also hardened steel, so their wear life should be much longer. Standard blades can't be hardened for safety, they could snap instead of bend sending part of the blade flying.
I'm looking at these to use for something that's similar to that of brush cutting of very overgrown areas. I'm curious if it's worth the expense or if just getting OEM blades would be better and cheaper. I can only think these would be better and less demanding on the mower when hitting debris or twigs/stumps. But it's more expensive than I would have thought.
Quality video reviewing the product. The only thing I didn't understand is saying that bent straight blade would be hard to fix.. A torch and a shop press to flatten and straighten it, grinder and nail in the wall to sharpen and balance it. If that flat plate gets warped by an anthill or log, or the retention clips get worn down by sand - could make for a bad day. All that said, I wouldn't stop anyone from trying the cutlass blades - so long as they had a beefy enough mower to handle them (I wouldn't put them on a less than 16hp mower or on a mower with a box-store thin deck).
I like it I like it how about a regular ride lawnmower or just just gotta be just those kind of lawn more will those blades work for a regular lawn more? I have a 42 craftsman rider.
When I mow I turn to the right, re-cutting the windrow and spreading it out. If I have let the grass get to thick I do have to turn to the left because the windrow will be too big to re-mow.
Went to the link in your comments and the blade there is made much differently than yours in the video. Linked blade does not have the square center section for holding the 4 blades. Is it the same company that you got yours from?
Yeah, I had seen the other shape, which is even more unusual, and was expecting to get that. I don’t know if they’ve recently done a design change or if it is certain sizes that have a different shape.
Looks like they redesigned them since this video. I was concerned by the large square center collecting clippings on top. The new ones look like a four leaf clover.
My question is if the initial cost is high and you damaged the adapter part quess what you have to replace that expensive part instead of just replacing a lawn mower blade in retrospect
Well, I don't think they'd fit on my mower as my blades and spindles have star shaped holes/shafts...like a large Torx socket, lol. Not sure what Husqvarna had in mind when they made them.
I called Cutlass and asked about this. They make the center piece with whatever style is needed. The order page askes about a second hole but not about shape. But you can note it on the page. Include how many points are on the star. If at all possible, answer the question about what model blade came on the deck.
Ok I like the concept but on the swivel blade part, what happens when the square part holding the blades comes in contact with something hard? Would that have the same effect as a straight blade? Are these also made for the push mower? Don't need a riding mower.
Nice cut but does not look robust at all. I don't think they'll last anywhere near as long as a heavier style blade. A longevity review would be appropriate. Maybe you'll consider this, keep up the good work 👍🏻.
Here in the US most lawn mowers use a single straight blade...larger mowers have multiple blades, but they're all fixed length, they don't swivel at all. Flail mowers, reel mowers (not very popular anymore), and brush hogs are the only swinging blade type mowers here in the US. Most people are mowing their lawns with a regular lawn mower which just uses the single straight blades. That straight blade works fine, as long as your yard is clean, or whatever area you are mowing is clean, but if not, you end up with bent or even broken mower blades, damaged mower deck spindles, etc.
As far as balancing goes I think you'd have to be significantly different in weight to throw those out of balance, they're not precision weight to start with so I don't think you're going to have a problem there. I would bet you could even take one of the blades off and only have three and I bet it would run just fine because that center square piece has got 90% of your centrifugal force right there
Those are fancy. But im a landscaper/ lawncare pro. Hustler mowers are ok. But for me its gravely. High lift copperhead blades with a true mulch kit is all I run. Im glad theres still some ideas out there. But maybe you can design a damn bearing for quick change. Pull a pin and change the blades without that 15/16s bolt
if you can bend those heavy one piece mower blade…you can bend that one, too. The ears on the square hub, where the blades bolt on, are half the thickest…interesting to see how they hold up. I think for mowing thick, unknown territory, I’d like a one piece heavy blade. If you known an area has no obstacles, I think these multi piece blades would be shine!
Just a thought, let's compare different style cutters used on weed eaters, plastic string works good but does not last.a flat mower type blade cuts slow and takes a lot of power.A skill saw blade takes power, lasts longer, cuts heavier brush but needs to be shielded because it is dangerous .
I’ve bent plenty of blades over the years from hitting things. I can definitely see the advantages of a swing blade. One thing he did not demonstrate is how these stripe. With most mowers, lift and airflow are the primary way they create their stripe. This is where I have my concerns with this concept.
It’s simple to take off 3 blades that cost $60 and sharpen once a month for a home owner for 30 minutes. So how expensive are these blades and how expensive is each individual blade cost and how long does it take to sharpen 12 blades?
You usually get what you pay for but customer support needs to be good too. I’m going to design and fabricate my own to avoid the hassle of dealing with the poor customer service.
I wonder how they would work with my leaf bagger attached ?...Also, my JD 300 riding mower has a 3 bladed mower deck, does it work for multi bladed decks? pc
Probably not very well...a bagger needs a high lift type blade in order to get enough lift and velocity to blow the clippings into the bags....now if you had a powered leaf collection system that has the blower on them, those blades demonstrated in this video would probably work fine. The zero turn mower he has in this video is a 3 blade deck, so yes, it works on multi-blade decks.
@@patrickcorbett8361 You can see the mower in the video and with enough sense would know it has more than 1 blade. I'm not aware of any decks that size with 1 blade. Even some of the 30" walk behind mowers have 2 blades. The blades shown in this video are ridiculously expensive, you have nearly 1/2 the cost of a new lawn tractor tied up in a set of blades...add to that replacement cutters...that's a heck of a lot of money to spend when you could simply just clean up your property and not run over stuff that would damage the blades LOL. I'm almost through my 3rd season with the Gator G5 blades on my lawn tractor that I have yet to even need to sharpen, let alone damage. When you mow a new area, or for someone else you really gotta be careful, I'd use a rough cut mower at the very least mowing an area that hasn't been mowed before, or a walk behind string trimmer. Going out there with a fancy zero turn mower cutting an uncut area is just asking for trouble...yeah people do it, but its really bad for the equipment. A tractor with a brush hog would be a good start, once you get it knocked down then go through with a regular mower, no need for blades like this to mow a lawn in the first place...there have been several different companies come out with blades like these, you never see them after a while because people realize they're way too expensive and not built as well as one would think. They also don't perform very well in heavy/thick grass.
@wildbill23c regular blades for my mower are around $80 for a set at my local dealership. So these cost an extra $300 on a mower that cost $15,000. After the initial purchase the replacement tips aren’t more than regular blades. That is a one time investment at .02% off the cost of the mower. Also, I’m not trying to convince anybody to buy them. I’m just showing them
If my grass is a reasonable height, then I mow back-and-forth but if it’s really tall, then I mow in squares. Alternating directions with really tall grass means you make big Wind rows of cut grass
The blades may be easy to remove for sharpening---but how to balance them is another story, which would also include that square plate they attach to. I'd be concerned about the wear and tear on the spindles due to that. Good video, but I'll stick with the 3 "normal" blades on my ZTR.
does doing a second cut in the other direction fix your problem with what's more laid over ? from what I see in your closing shot, I'd do a new pass in the opposite direction and try to not hit the same wheel patterns exactly. Cool blade and thought that went into it.
They're designed to be no longer than your standard blades with the tips swung out. Any obstruction that these replacements would hit under the deck, your standard blades would also hit.
I believe, What you see on the website is the same product. They are just shaped differently for different size mowers. My 72 inch deck had a square center.
G'day bloke my name's Pete. I live in Australia, and I would love a set of these blades for my Hustler 60-inch zero turn mower. Is there any way that we could get in contact so we could make this happen? I look forward to hearing from you. Regards Pete.
@RockhillfarmYT Yes, I can see that, I've contacted the company, and they don't ship to Australia at the moment. I'd really love to give them a go. This may be a bit left field, but is there any chance of me paying you plus extra for your time and work to send me a set out to Australia. All expenses plus more covered? This would be so appreciated all the way from Australia! Happy to chat more if needed. Thanks so much!
Had a fixed blade snap on a mower and it hit a fence I was just weedwacking 10 seconds earlier. And he didn’t hit anything the more started to shake real bad out of know where and we thought a rope hose or cable got in the deck and the more slung something to the fence. But when we looked there wasn’t anything haven’t noticed the broken blade tried to deck again and it shook like crazy. He went to the fence while I reinspected the deck and at the same time we yelled out the blade broke I found the broken blade the same time he for the other half.😂 it put a hole in that fence.

They look like the old Jacobson lawn mower blade. It was killed off by OSHA in the seventies. Great mowers, long gone.
Thanks for the info brock
Looks like they redesigned them since this video. I was concerned by the large square center collecting clippings on top. The new ones look like a four leaf clover.
what do they weigh compared to standard blade
Did you ever do an update on these blades after using for them so long?
My question is if the initial cost is high and you damaged the adapter part quess what you have to replace that expensive part instead of just replacing a lawn mower blade in retrospect
Off the topic. What battery powered weed trimmer would you recommend that does it all as in trimming thick grass and weeds?
Well, I don't think they'd fit on my mower as my blades and spindles have star shaped holes/shafts...like a large Torx socket, lol. Not sure what Husqvarna had in mind when they made them.
I called Cutlass and asked about this. They make the center piece with whatever style is needed. The order page askes about a second hole but not about shape. But you can note it on the page. Include how many points are on the star. If at all possible, answer the question about what model blade came on the deck.
Thanks, Interesting Blade[s]. Got to give 'those people' that hate "'Dead clumpy grass get too tall', some grief; Dead grass still grows? 8:02 Cheers!
So how do you still like them? How are they on lift?
What about if you bag your grass? does it have enough lift and velocity to force the grass up and through the chutes?
“Hi it’s Brock here from brockhill farms.”
Are you still going to bend the flat plate there attached to
Ok I like the concept but on the swivel blade part, what happens when the square part holding the blades comes in contact with something hard? Would that have the same effect as a straight blade? Are these also made for the push mower? Don't need a riding mower.
Nice cut but does not look robust at all. I don't think they'll last anywhere near as long as a heavier style blade.
A longevity review would be appropriate.
Maybe you'll consider this, keep up the good work 👍🏻.
The blade tips are also hardened steel, it should last longer from general wear over standard non hardened blades
My mower has a five point mounting spindle, will this mount the same as a spindle with no points
How easy do the blades snap on off after they've been used?
As an Aussie i didnt realise swivel blades wernt standard in other places around the world 😂
Here in the US most lawn mowers use a single straight blade...larger mowers have multiple blades, but they're all fixed length, they don't swivel at all.
@@wildbill23c In Australia we tend to mow low, usually 2 inches or less so swing back blades are essential when the ground is a little unclean.
Do they make a Gator style blade for that? Maybe switch 2 of the blades to a gator type blade. It might mulch even better?
With that little short blade you could easily set up a little jig or fixture to hold the blade and sharpen the consistently.
Brock have you looked into the Blade Solution system😊
As far as balancing goes I think you'd have to be significantly different in weight to throw those out of balance, they're not precision weight to start with so I don't think you're going to have a problem there. I would bet you could even take one of the blades off and only have three and I bet it would run just fine because that center square piece has got 90% of your centrifugal force right there
Hey, do they sound any different or quieter?
Looks like the actual little blades are the same as the ones on a disc type hay mower
The flail design also should help prevent bending a mower shaft from hitting a solid and set object with a straight blade.
if you can bend those heavy one piece mower blade…you can bend that one, too. The ears on the square hub, where the blades bolt on, are half the thickest…interesting to see how they hold up. I think for mowing thick, unknown territory, I’d like a one piece heavy blade. If you known an area has no obstacles, I think these multi piece blades would be shine!
watched the first round n some how found the new ones thanks for sharing this great information
Joe the tree guy
By the way ,high lift blades wear really fast in areas with sandy soil.
Looking forward to receiving my Cutlass Blades. I ordered them 2 months ago and they have not arrived yet. Are there problems at the shop?
Just a thought, let's compare different style cutters used on weed eaters, plastic string works good but does not last.a flat mower type blade cuts slow and takes a lot of power.A skill saw blade takes power, lasts longer, cuts heavier brush but needs to be shielded because it is dangerous .
So you can mow piles of steel and rock now awesome just what i was looking for🤔
How do they work with a bagger? Have fun!!
It's also kinda like blades on a disc bind hay mower. With individual floating heads with small replaceable blades.
My problem with megmo was they don’t have the lift to mow just once. Do these.lift well? They look like the back is a better design
I think you answered my question
Can they be used on a john deere 42" lawn mower?
How does that work with multiple spindles??
Coach Elko is TOP NOTCH ...
Given time they certainly can be ...
and it may not take too much time at that ...
How do you like them now
I wonder how they would work with my leaf bagger attached ?...Also, my JD 300 riding mower has a 3 bladed mower deck, does it work for multi bladed decks?
@@wildbill23c Brock should have mentioned that his was a 3 bladed deck...I didn't assume that as he only mentioned one blade replacement
Yes. Mine has 3 blades. 72” cut
I’m just showing them
Any particular reason why you choose to mow around instead of back & forth as most would do with a ztr?
If my grass is a reasonable height, then I mow back-and-forth but if it’s really tall, then I mow in squares.
Alternating directions with really tall grass means you make big Wind rows of cut grass
The blades may be easy to remove for sharpening---but how to balance them is another story, which would also include that square plate they attach to. I'd be concerned about the wear and tear on the spindles due to that. Good video, but I'll stick with the 3 "normal" blades on my ZTR.
The discharge appears well dispersed. How does that compare to your straight blade? Nevermind, 7:49
Been here in Sweden for many years
My thing is, will that entire square metal plate bend if you hit a stump?
What happens when you bend the square blade holder?
does doing a second cut in the other direction fix your problem with what's more laid over ? from what I see in your closing shot, I'd do a new pass in the opposite direction and try to not hit the same wheel patterns exactly. Cool blade and thought that went into it.
How can it replace a straight blade? The shape of the underside of the deck would seem to prohibit them from working properly.
They're designed to be no longer than your standard blades with the tips swung out. Any obstruction that these replacements would hit under the deck, your standard blades would also hit.
Just like a bush hog blade. And in Louisiana they are tough as shit.
How to order the square plate there web site don’t show them?
I believe, What you see on the website is the same product. They are just shaped differently for different size mowers.
My 72 inch deck had a square center.
When that bolt fails… shit hits the fan
What height did you mow it at?
Would rather see a "round" concentric hub where the blades connect as I believe it would have better cutting performance. Thx
G'day bloke my name's Pete.
I live in Australia, and I would love a set of these blades for my Hustler 60-inch zero turn mower. Is there any way that we could get in contact so we could make this happen? I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards Pete.
It’s not my product. I put a link in the pinned comment that leads to the manufacturer website
