  • In this episode I get our new (to us) wee Noelex 25 trailer yacht ready to take to Lake Rotoiti in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. Building some cabinets, painting and lining the hull.
Nina & I make a beautiful Christmas cordial from the native New Zealand Christmas tree the Pohutukawa.
    Recipe:
    - 100gm Pohutukawa stamens/1litre bottle
    - 150gm sugar
    - 1/3 tspn citric acid Steep stamens in 1 litre of boling water overnight & bottle the next day! Best with bubbly & gin!
I install a 200w solar panel with a MPPT Victron solar controller into two 100Ah deep cycle AMG batteries. This allows us to run a fridge freezer and lighting, charging etc even on overcast periods. On a sunny day we even run a portable ice maker!
Having a wonderful two week spell of warm weather we get to return to the lake where all our adventures began. Lake Rotoiti. We sail around the amazingly beautiful shoreline to remote beachs and check out the famous Lake Rotoiti Hot Pools lakerotoitihot...

It’s good to see you all back out on the water. Well done with the boat upgrades. We sailed the Noelex 25 at the Great Escapes sailing school in Opua after Christmas.

Very impressive work with your boat. Also thanks for the great pointers in the solar panel. Can you share some details on the make and model and price of possible?
Love the scenery and the water plane landing and even more so the house on the pontoon. Amazing!!!!

Well surprisingly that panel setup was cheaper that everything we did on Polly and its output far higher. Its a budget 200w POLYCHRYSTALINE (best for efficiency) Cost NZ$179 , Victron Smart controller 20Amp NZ$280 (bluetooth connectivity). Two 100Ah AMG batteries (these were new and free given to me by a friend) which means effectively we have a total storage and use of around 100Ah (50% of battery capacity) . Each day away the batteries were well charged back to capacity before lunch reaching a maximum rate of over 13Ah - 3Ah more than Polly ever did with lots more panels! This also means that on days were its not fully sunny or short winter days, we will still be well OK for power. The fridge is incredible and uses around 20Ah/per 24hrs . www.jaycar.co.nz/50l-brass-monkey-dual-zone-fridge-freezer/p/GH1642?pos=4&queryId=f91094c8dea3c0e75394a43d7ca28d6d&sort=relevance

@@FreedomSailing that is brilliant! I was always worried on how much solar power would I need to purchase and it seems this is a great option. Thank you very much. Hopefully you are all well settled in NZ. We just got back to the UK. Can’t wait to crack in with the studying now.

Great video that sparked some fond memories of times spent on the lake. Nice work on the refit. Would love to watch more on this, is that something you are considering to make / release?
