Dancing the tinikling is so tricky, if you miss the beat, your foot ends up getting caught between those bamboo sticks. Seeing these makes me miss dancing those. Thanks for your appreciation of the filipino culture!
the philippines is really the odd man out of asia as you can see the spanish influence in every bit of the way and it is so different from its neighbors......
Yeah, but Spanish never became the common language. Even Chabacano, a Filipino dialect that’s mostly Spanish and spoken in one province, is as different from modern Spanish as Portuguese or Italian.
Spanish only never became the common lingo bcs the English banned it and the Japanese embraced Tagalog. Most of our revolutionaries spoke in Spanish, clearly influenced and fueled by European nationalism.
@@StockyDude Spanish actually was an official language but was replaced when the Americans conquered the Philippines and had teachers from US to teach the population English. It also doesn't helped that Spanish was only spoken by the officials and elites.
Small facts about Cariñosa. In the Philippines, aside from it's Spanish meaning, it can also means, attractive, charismatic. It's one of the courting, Filipino style, dance. The significance of the red handkerchiefs that they held at each end parts, while they dance, is because during earlier times, it's disrespectful to the girls if you touch them. The oldies use to say, if a boy touched the girl, wether it's accidental or intentional, he should marry the girl.
They are both Spanish/Hispanic influenced as well in the way of clothing. but indeed the roots of Tinikling and the bamboo sticks are South East Asian :)
Samantha, this Tinikling dance is supposed to simulate the movements of the Tikling birds to escape the bamboo snares or traps. And you are correct, the tempo is 3/4 like a fast waltz.
Tikling is a bird but it is not a swallow. The dance (tinikling) depicts the tikling trying to escape from a trap. I used to hunt the tikling with a slingshot when I was growing up in Nueva Ecija. I am now writing from Virginia, USA.
Some localities perform those dances to welcome tourists to their place. And usually tourists are asked to join in, esp the tinikling and they usually oblige. Would you? 😉

If you'd like to watch more cultural dances of the Philippines, I'd recommend the Bayanihan National Dance Company. Here's a relatively short video showing excerpts from various Philippines dances from pre-colonial, tribal to Spanish colonial periods ua-cam.com/video/VO5VAwEEDMA/v-deo.html. If I am to be honest, the Cariñosa dance you watched was a bit underwhelming to say the least.
Thank you Mr Bryantpark88 for referring to Bayanihan National Dance Company’s collage of Philippine dances presented in Seattle, Washington years back. Those were shortened dances solely for youtube time requirement. If am not mistaken that show ran for 1 hour 45 minutes. The key to this dance is to never look at the bamboo.
More true than one would intuitely think. All you need is a sense of rhythm. Your eyes would betray you more than your ears in this case.
