you should try using a polar coordinate gantry instead of xy, would give more coverage, require less materials, and be more efficient for circular motions.

I think if I were gonna build one, I would have one axis be angle and the other be distance from center. Still 2 axis but should be simpler construction and less dead zone caused by the square work area of the 3d printer frame.
You could try using a array of linear motors instead, should be much faster although much less precise. Would also be quite a bit cheaper considering you’ll just need a load of wires.
Would you please make a short video showing the effects of a triangle configuration of 3 steel balls and a hexagon configuration with 6 steel balls (five outer balls and a center ball for stability). I think that could potentially add an interesting level of depth to the patterns in the sand, assuming the ball bearing shapes remained in their intended shape. Thank you!
Instead of an X & Y gantry, you could make it a Diameter & Rotation (or Radius & Rotation) system. It could be fewer parts and reach the entire circle without corners. ☮️❤️🌈
In the video there was a problem with the circular table and the x-y gantry. It meant that there would inevitably be sides the marble couldn't reach. I was thinking about that again while watching this, and I just thought. Why not make the table square then?

How loud is it when running?
