Is Reality TV Bad for Black People?

  • Today’s rant, or f*ck it i’m bothered if you will is based off a video that was sent to me on instagram and later I saw that comedian and opinionist D.L. Hughley also posted it on his instagram page. It’s a clip from a podcast called Smitty and Dee. One of my issues with how conversations like these are framed is that it is steeped in the idea that black people have to prove we are worthy of respect, dignity, and humanity.

    I read the title...and saw that I was from my crush, Jemele. The answer to the question posed in the title, yes, Reality TV is terrible for Black people. I go to the mall, and walk people have complete conversations. on the speakerphone. Why? Reality TV started this, and people have accepted it as proper. It isn't. There are many problems in our community, but we do not have to contribute to the perception of our own people. WE should not worry about what White folks think about us, but our image should matter to us.

    Hi Jemele, I disagree with you. It seems you are treading the fence, trying to appeal to what is popular. It is so much easier to go along with what is the popular thought of today, than to go against the grain and tell the truth. Reality tv is by far more TOXIC than it is productive to the black community and frankly, society as a whole. The points you made are valid, yet they have nothing to do with what this gentleman said. Your points of discussion towards the end of the video could have simply been a separate video.
    This educated, successful, black man told no lies. Instead of you supporting him, as he attempts to steer our community in the right direction by stating HIS VIEWS, you attempted to point out where he was wrong! Why? He seems to be your senior and has lived more life than you also. Not once did this educated man mention anything about white people or trying to be seen as respectable by “them”. Way to deflect! This is about bettering the image of Black women and men in society for our people, our children, our future. Hands down reality tv is by far more TOXIC than it is productive to our community. Basketball Wives, Love and Hip Hop, RHOA, Married to Medicine etc. TOXIC, TOXIC, TOXIC. These are the role models in the black community, our “queens.” Fights, drama, shade, low vibrational story lines. Black women are being exploited and do not even realize it, or maybe they just don’t care because, they are getting “a bag.” Smh . Hope you kept your audience by simping to what is popular. I just wish our people will WAKE UP!! At some point we have to tell the truth and flat out condemn what is clearly destructive to our community. It starts within.

    I think that sensible people can mostly agree that black reality tv is trash. It’s influence is reflective of people valuing being entertained over most anything else..
    The beauty industry topic is a tough one for me. I’m not a fan of pocket watching. But to read what the gross sales are, it’s downright depressing.
    It’s financially it responsible to spend that much money on what’s not even necessary, just to go to the convenience store or even work… That money could be going into a better quality of life for families… Just talking being financially irresponsible, beauty products purchases and use is no different than being an alcoholic and weedhead. Little girls are brought up to be ashamed to not have braids and weave before preschool. Totally unnecessary. Women used to only put on wigs, weave, and makeup for special occasions and church. Now everybody thinks they’re a damn model and get into costume before hitting the door…
    Fiscally irresponsible.

  • @KHooks

    Black women spend 9 to 1 on beauty products compared to every other demographic in the United States. That is utterly ridiculous and speaks to a deeper issue within Black women.

      I totally agree...I honestly think we are giving too much trust to viewers who regularly watch those type of reality shows. In my personal opinion, I don't think many of them have the level of Intelligence needed to differentiate between what's real and what's being portrayed. Perception is reality in most societies....in addition, I do believe we should stop putting too much attention on what whites think of us and start really focusing on what blacks think of blacks.

    • @BlazePas
      @BlazePas 10 місяців тому

      Here is the common sense response…racism, violence and oppression to/of black women didn’t start or get worse with reality TV…its no different than blaming reality TV for black women wearing wigs or weaves…that didn’t start with Flavor of love. I think her points are clear and accurate…she dismantles the generalizations of his commentary, educates us on what he defines as “entrepreneurial” or not and gives historical reference of how supremacy actually dictates the views of black women. Very clear imo.

    Great perspective Jemele. A lot of people might not know we were the only race of people that were taught to hate each other. That hate, like racism has been passed on from generation to generation. We are a major part of the problem because we continue to perpetuate these stereo types. There will always be people that will hate us, unfortunately a lot of those people are other black people. We support this ignorance and not positive programming and that is 100% the fault of black people.

    Interesting. Look as grown folks, we gotta understand that the days of brilliant tv are over. Most individuals who done matriculated at Yale, etcetera ain't gon get them "Clair Huxtable" type roles no more. We know that traditional sitcoms have been replaced by reality tv due to massive budget cuts. We know that it costs $1M to produce one episode of a sitcom. It's cheaper to produce reality tv that's easy-breezy. Reality tv is the norm. Sure, black women have to deal w/ negative stereotypes that come behind reality tv, but at the end of the day, it's entertainment and folks are tryna get paid. Reality tv is the way of the world right nah. The days of "Mom, you read my diary?! HOW COULD YOU?!" (runs upstairs and slams door) are over. It's all about drama right nah. Most forms of entertainment have been watered down because we're in a microwave generation where attention spans done decreased and the burnout is instant. Everything is clout-driven and thirst-driven.

    Yes. Entertainment is about supply and demand, trash content = big money. Unfortunately or not audiences love a big ol’ mess, the messier the better it’s nothing new. “Reality” tv is a hot mess and it’s profitable and some use it as a form of escapism but it can warp their way of looking at the real world. But if there’s money to be made trust someone is going to make it. But comparing all black women to characters on a tv show is as asinine as comparing all men to say Denzel Washington. Those who choose to believe it are going to believe it anyway.

    First of all I love your hair. I love all your videos. They are informative and sometimes funny. Oprah made a statement. She want hv reality shows on her channel. Now she does. It is all about money and ratings. Keep pushing those informative videos. I will be right there watching. Take care.
