Cody sold his soul to the MMA Gods for one night of perfection. And in exchange, the gods removed his patience and turned him into a wild fighter for the rest of his career.
Didn't he get knocked the fuck out like 3 times in a row after Dillaroid? Think he moved down to 135 got a KO.....then proceeded to get KTFO out there like twice in a row again.
Cody's reign may not have lasted but this is one of the best and most surprising (to most) performances in UFC history. Also just a great and competitive fight.
Just a classic example of short-inside hooks beating the looping punches Dom threw. Traditional sharp boxing is all it really took to counter Dom's style, and it also helped that Cody stuffed the TD attempts by Dom, because it discouraged him from trying to throw more attempts out. It just worked out perfectly for Cody. Hindsight is 20-20 but when you think about it, it's kind of crazy how it took fighters this long to figure out how to counter Dom, but then again, not many of them were the sharpest strikers.
Think of the thousands of fighters out there that never got to the top. Think of the thousands of guys like Chael who fell just short of the belt. Cody did all that. For that one night it felt like he could take on the entire Wehrmacht and dance his way to a victory. It wasn't like Cruz was a tomato can champion that was easy to beat. You're talking about the greatest Bantam in history. And yet Cody looked like he was on a higher plane of existence. For that one night, he was immortal.

He made a pact with Maddux Maple who had cancer and said if he could beats cancer than Cody will win the belt. 5 years later that kid beat leukemia and Cody beat Cruz and wins the belt. After the fight Cody puts the belt on that kid! "It was a surreal moment”, said Garbrandt of winning the title. “It was something I’ll never forget. No matter what happens for the rest of my life, I’m very thankful for this kid. He came into my life in unfortunate circumstances. Most of you don’t know, but he was battling leukemia at the age of five years old"
Yeah, great point. I watched it all the other day. I was shocked MMA On Point listed it as the fourth best performance of all time. They chose Silva's three minutes over Forrest Griffin. I'm sorry, beating Dom Cruz this badly for 25 minutes is infinitely more impressive than beating Forrest for three minutes. He dropped his hands, charged, and got countered. Big deal. This was a strange fight. Midway through the second, I thought, Cody is busting Dom up. By the fourth, I was blinking. By the fifth, it was like, okay, who the hell is this kid again? Dom's strength is being unorthodox and disrupting your timing. This was like watching a snake play with a mongoose and laugh at him. Dom feasted off guys once he figured them out. After TJ beat Cody his confidence was never the same. Cody never looked angry in this fight or scared. He was confident and using his foot work and his hand speed. It’s too bad
Cody’s shorter arms and tighter hooks allowed for faster recovery of balance from his shots. Dominick Cruz uses his footwork to compensate for those slow, whipping hooks. Cody stayed inside until the hooks where thrown and then switch stepped backwards to make the punches barely miss while his own counterstrikes would beat any combos cruz threw to the punch.
It wasn’t just how well Cody was fighting and dodging everything with his impeccable spacing & timing. It was also how poorly Cruz was fighting at times. Wildly inaccurate punches to the point at times looking like an amateur. And this is coming from a Cruz fan. Cruz always talks about studying MMA and the opponent and how not as many fighters do it as much as they should. Well Cody certainly studied Cruz coming into this fight and was maybe the first time in a long time a fighter was more prepared than Cruz in a fight against him Excellent fight
It felt like Dom had no sense of distance in this fight, he was putting his full power into swings that had no chance of hitting and he was just gassing himself out.

Classic example of styles make fights. Cody is a great boxer, just one that can't control his emotions, but Dominick throws hooks, he doesn't throw 1-2 down the pipe. I've yet to see Dom ever throw a cross. Cody simply beat him to the punch because he was inside while Dom was outside. You throw inside your opponent's hook, and you'll get there first. You know your opponent only throws looping hooks, a parry to short hook counter is a beautiful response. That's exactly what happened here. Cody could look like a world-beater sometimes, but this just worked out in his favor more than anyone expected, as Dom was never really challenged with a sharp boxer like Cody before this who could figure out how to counter Dom's style
Cody Garbrandt had good head movement but people will say rivalry broke Cody mentally but it was that. He's always had a bad habit of leaving his chin up and he's guard down during close range instead of sticking to fundamentals
