Owners can readily improve 2 items mentioned in negatives: lcd screen can be set to night mode all the time (orange background) and the handlebars have a second set of mounting holes to bring them closer for enhanced comfort.
I enjoy my 1290r 3.0 very much and is a big improvement over the 1.0 that I also owned.
The forward 'racy' bar position suits the bike. I've seen lots of people who have tried the 'comfort' setting going back to the original as you need the forward weight bias to manage the bike.
I love your reviews as they are more aimed at someone like me who isn't ripping it up on tracks week in week out, or racing through country roads with my knee down.
I can relate to what you say in your reviews. Another great and honest review. Thanks!
Agree totally.
I appreciate that - I too get fed up of all the wheelie/track day stuff you see on so many UA-cam channels (mostly form pro journalists) - in the real world most people don't have the skills/desire to ride like that (I don't) and I try to cater for real-world!
Nice balanced review Andy. I absolutely love mine but don’t disagree about the negative points (although I am taller and find the riding position bearable for long treks).
Overall, it’s a great bike and I’d advise people to go for a cheaper Austin Racing or SC Project slip on, both of which have better sounds. Good vid 👍🏻
Good call on those exhausts Chris!
I got the AR can on mine. Personally I prefer the look and sound of it. It's cheaper too!
I second the AR can and it sounds epic and if you ask AR nicely you might get a discount👍
Had Austin racing can on my RSV4 factory, loud, very loud 😎
Am I the only man with any sense? AR is simply the worst exhaust on the market... sound like shit, brutally loud, and looks just awful. Nothing competes with the Akra from a performance perspective, but you're all squids for focusing on sound over performance. Unreal, I'm shook.
Can't wait till u review the 2021 s1000r and new Tuono 🤘
And the 2021 monster
The thing that concerns me about "pay extra to have it enabled" means that amateur hackers are going to try and hack into the software themselves to enable stuff which could result in dangerous accidental alterations to the software. Not a sensible path to go down in my view!! Great review Andy although I still don't like the looks!1
As far as I understand the software update has to be downloaded to be installed. It's not actually on the bike. Even if they could get into the ECU they couldn't trigger the download without very specific information that isn't on the bike, and if thy had that information, they would need to hack the ECU.
@@4tech69 I don't believe that is the case, at least in the past you just had to enter a code to unlock the functionality.
Fiction. No. Do you think KTM would want that liability? If you can’t afford the $750 track pack which a good dealer will discount for you-you have no business buying one .
Straight pipe needed!🤣🔥 I own a 790, but I and I definitely do not agree with the options it’s daylight robbery with the 1290.
When the 790 comes WITH a quickshifter, then yep.. absolutely agree... they are taking the mick asking you to pay extra for those items!
Austin Racing Can only on the 790 sounds brilliant check my vid if interested best one you can get for 790 imo
@@Kickassdave The 790 does come with a quick shifter and all modes enabled.
Noisy bikes damage motorcycling.
That deal about having the parts all on the bike but having to pay extra to actually allow them to function seems to me to be a way to hose the consumer; not a good recommendation for KTM in my opinion!
those i dont really like how the bike already has the softwar, but you have to unlock it via "pay wall". Its like the farce with the BMW planning to make heated seats where you pay a subscription to use it
Hi the aggressive riding style can be changed simply by moving the bars to the closer position to you as there’s two lots of holes there to change it and if that’s no enough you can then tilt the bars up more so this gives you the same sort of riding position like the gen 2 hooligan mode 👍🏽👊🏽✊🏽
Thanks for the info
Owners Manual recommends that the bars be in the forward location for Track use - is this the factory (showroom) position ? I bought mine used - bars were in the forward location, but unsure if this is "standard" ?
@@59pontiac68 yes my 2020 were in forward position when I bought it new.
@@kmfiz Great - thanks for the confirmation. Kind of implies that moving the bars to the rear position is potentially less stable (?)
Reliability would be the only thing I worry about with this manufacturer- been there done that 💩
Yup, same here. I have not heard much about the 1290's, but the 790 and 390 sure seems to have lots of reliability things floating around.
The sunlight hitting the bike makes the orange and blue pop.
Loved the old orange and white colour scheme but this one sorry no. Looks like an explosion in a sticker factory. At nearly £16k asking price, paying for software upgrades is a definite no. You forgot the Aprilia Tuono. By a country mile a better bike and currently now thousands cheaper.
I suspect the cat is muffling the noise to quite an extent.
And the huge baffle box sitting under most eur5 bikes.
Agreed having to pay extra for a software upgrade to use, essentially parts already there, is a kick in the bum. Especially a bike that expensive. On principle alone, I’d trade my dollars elsewhere, if in the market. I believe the review aspects of the channel are indeed a great resource for anyone looking at any of the many bikes you show.👍🏼 😎 🇺🇸 🌎
Unfortunately, a factory fitted Akrapovic exhaust can, won't be much louder than stock, as it has to meet the same noise/emissions requirements as stock.
Better to save the money, and fit your own aftermarket can.
When TMF does videos in the nice weather..... Makes me really S.A.D :(
Me too - roll on summer!
Riding position: Thank God you can get a $24 dollars 1-inch up/3/4-inch back handlebar riser in orange even.
A krap o vich is how the locals in Slovenia pronounce it
@Pete Pester I guess the main thing about getting Akro is that the warranty still stands, while if you use any other type of after-market exhaust, you may end up with a void warranty.
@Pete Pester fair enough, that’s a calculated choice.
You can change the handlebar and footpeg positions, looks like that bike is in the most sporty setting 😜👍
So you can set it up for a more upright riding position for longer rides?
@@52yamahar1 yeah, and the footpegs can be moved up and down for a better knee angle 👍
I was very much a victim of the marketing department when I bought my second gen in '18. Just had to have it, so I did. I agree on the sentiment of the electronic packages. Despite that, I bought the quickshifter and Akra mapping. The track pack is still on the list. No I don't like spending several hundred for a coded paywall, but holy hell, that quickshifter is GOOD. There's a lot of complicated tech involved in smooth downshifts. Nonetheless, I think KTM is doing themselves a disservice selling these things separately. If they were standard, they'd have a MASSIVELY strong sales argument over the competition. The grand or so that these packages cost combined probably aren't that big a deal on top of the MSRP when you look at the prices of the Tuono / SFV4S / MT10, but they DO annoy everyone when purchased separately. That same grand could be used on a stiffer steering damper or better fork internals. Areas that aren't quite as good as that absolutely bonkers addictive engine.
I understand that manufacturers are in the business of making money, but it is quite telling that they paywall an electronic code. They had to go out of their way to equip the bike with a quick shifter, then make the conscious decision to simply make it inaccessible.
I like KTM but too many reviews I've read seemd to include a section describing how it broke in some way. I've known two people who owned one (albeit slightly older models) and they spent almost as much time at the dealer as they did riding them.
They do seem to have a bit of a reputation but I’ve personally never had any issues with a KTM...
I have found my ktm a lot more reliable than I thought I had a 2014 bmw s1000rr that I thought was going to be break but always have electronic problems so I sold it and said the ktm couldn’t be any worse and it’s very good one problem was my battery lead came loose but since I tightened it it’s good
Thanks, been looking at these for a while. You sealed the deal I will be going for a black one.
SC project Exhaust is on the list. Anyone recommend a decent tail tidy and some bar end mirrors?
Not a fan of KTM's, the looks of all their bikes just don't appeal to me.
Even the dirt bikes ?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as always. Personally, I love most of them.
@@portaltwo Indeed. One man's meat is another man's poison, as they say.
I do like the super-nakeds, very much looking forward to the new Speed Triple 1200 being announced next week! :-)
Stay tuned - I shall have a video uploaded as soon as the bike is announced!
How come all of the aftermarket full exhaust systems I've seen of this bike also have a huge cat on it? Also, can you remove the stock cat with bolts or is it welded on?
Euro 5 homologation requirement.
Check Austin Performance Racing Exhaust, they did a really good job with the 1290, the only one in my opinion
There are aftermarket full systems without a cat.
Yeah but I haven't seen anyone uploading yet. I did see one without a cat on the AR page. Anyway I don't have an SDR, I'm currently on an RSV4(got some vids on my channel), but might sell it and buy a z900rs cafe, SDR is still out of my price range for now. :(
@@motorjack141 ua-cam.com/video/E4IYMcBhADc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=AustinracingExhausts
By the company themselves but wayyy better than stock or that Akrapovic nonsense both in looks and sound
Good review once again Andy as always very informative. Something I've noticed over the years is that you don't have a tendency to repeat yourself that I really like. Ride and stay safe. Lewis
Thank you Gill - appreciated!
Charging you for features already fitted but disabled means KTM is a company whose products I will avoid. Chiselling customers means they have mean, penny-pinching management which instantly means they can not be trusted.
It's not chiselling customers, it's letting you add it when you want it easily. Much less labour to add to every bike at production.
Just think if they took tips from a certain electric car company that allegedly disables such electronic add ons when the vehicle is sold to another user. Only for the new owner to have to purchase them again should they want them.
@@eubikedude I disagree. All of these features have been installed but disabled. Their cost of manufacture has already been taken into account. No extra components will bolted on, no additional parts added, no work required. An example of this greedy chiselling was IBM. In the 1980’s they were the biggest computer manufacturer in the world. They’d install a computer system and a year or so down the line “rent” you an upgrade. Depending on how much you paid you could quadruple the capacity of your hard-drives and cut access times down by 75%. This work consisted of removing inhibiting jumpers on control panels and an a upgrade of the O/S (which was merely inserting a few characters) to enable the “improvements” to take place. IBM are no longer the biggest computer company in the world. Their customers found better (more ethical/less unethical?) suppliers.
@@Arachnoid_of_the_underverse Absolutely. This “theft” is what aircraft manufactures do. If you want to fly it at less than minus 60ºC you must purchase it. It’s a change in the manual. Use a different towbarless tug, you purchase the change the change in the manual. The same is done for engine thrust, operating weights, take-off performance and so on. And you pay per aircraft. Thieves! And as for airlines, they are no different. Search for “If airlines sold paint”.
That paint job is enough reason for me...
i own the 2.0 with 60 000 km on the clock and counting. I dont want to upgrade to the 3.0 because the power is the same
You neglected to mention their reliability. Still a black mark on KTM, as the MCN long term review of this model illustrated only too well. However, my main gripe, even if their reliability and quality was genuine premium, is the garish colour schemes and lack of any options if, like myself, you absolutely hate orange. Secondly, their truly abysmal UK dealership network which seems to end at North Yorkshire. I was very tempted by a 790 adventure, could even possibly have closed my eyes to the horrible paint job until I got on it, but living in Newcastle I wasn't prepared to ride 60 plus miles to get a service. Fortunately, all turned out well as I ended up with a new Ducati, instead, which matches or possibly exceeds my older BMW for quality.
You can’t fault the Akrapovic can if the bike still has the catalytic converter. That is where most of the sound is lost and no can will change that. De-cat the bike and the sound from the Akrapovic will blow your mind.
you can when its £1699
Great review as always, one piece of info id like to see on a review is how far the bike will go on a full tank of fuel, I appreciate this would only be possible on your long term reviews. I have an MT10 which I love but if I had known just how often i’d be stopping for fuel I may of looked at other bikes. I like the idea of a Super Duke but would go for the GT just because of the larger fuel tank. Love the channel, keep up the great work.
Thanks Tim, will do!
I can see why fuel range is an important issue, the Empty Ten is aptly named 😂
@@Neil1052 the dealer told me this! After I handed over the cash 😂😂😂
You do nice reviews but this bike, in my opinion is ugly. Can't dig the color scheme. The forward positioning is certainly uncomfortable for any long riding, so whats the point if you can't spend time on it. Me thinks its overpriced and something to pass on.
Fair enough...
The over sensitive night mode - yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one who whinges about this. From your comment, I'd say it's even more irritating to me than you. Has to be an easy fix, KTM.
You can set it permanently to day or night mode I'm told....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I’ve not seen an option to do so but a bit of tape over the sensor will put it in permanent night mode.
hi Andy i still love my Ducati Multistrada 950s ,not a KTM fan boy always seems as the Computer Software needs updating ,also prices vary in different areas ,look out for 790s going cheap now the 890 has arrived lol ,
Here in Canada, you can pick up a new (discounted) 790 for around $9,900 (£5,700) vs an 890 (no discount) at $13,700 (£7,900). Plus the 790 comes with the quickshifter and track pack already activated as standard. Mind you, unless price is your main criterion, the 890 is still the far better bike, IMO. 😎
Really like the KTM 1290 but prefer my Aprilia Tuono, either are top of the line bikes though. Overall good review.
Just configured BMW S1000R and closed the page, when it went beyond 20000,- EUR ...not cheaper!
Between this orange dirt bike on 17" wheels and Ducati Street fighter, it is the Ducati any day. And if I want a twin, I'll get Monster 1200 which is cheaper and better. KTM's only selling point is this "hooligan" outlook of their bikes. I wonder for how long they are going to make ugly bug looking bikes.
How come u say "hey kids" not a gripe just an observation
I think Andy’s addressed viewers like that since his earliest vids. I guess he’s dealing with big toys and we’re all kids that want to play on them 😉
It’s just a catch phrase - don’t read anything into it!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer my tongue was firmly in my cheek mate 😀
Nice review.
In a garage of ten I'd have a ktm, but alas, a tragic lack of spons presents this.
Happy travels
Funny thing with all you guys wanting "more sound" or "better sound" or "louder pipes" and what have you, and being willing to spend a small fortune on it. Personally I love a quiet bike (not e-bike quiet though), but maybe that's because I mostly do a lot of long-stretch touring ...
I agree that it's a nice looking KTM and I also like the new colour scheme
Loud pipes...show boating its immature..👍
I'm with you on touring bikes Nick, I want a nice note but not too loud. If I'm riding a hooligan bike for short periods, the louder the better! ...although my neighbours would disagree!
@@KevinofWessex I guess we can all be a bit "immature" once in a while. I mean just being "proud" of your bike and wanting others to appreciate it the way you do yourself could be considered a bit immature, even if you're doing it in a toned down sort of way.
Indeed.....I'm not claiming to be mature of mind (even if undeniably physically i am).....
Milking the customer
Like it good one Andy different slip on for sure I agree .Leaves a nasty taste 👅 havin to pay extra just to plug into a computer to get the quick shifter that’s already there , and change the bars for me a toss up between this and a GS I’d have to test ride both . : )
I think the Akra exhaust sounds great! Sound is as subjective as looks I guess 🙂
Personally I think Akra are overrated, sound too similar to oem .
AR +SC sound Awesome !
bit picky on riding position and exhaust great when baffle is out agree with having to pay for track mode etc not good Had mine 6 months now and still smile every time i look in garage and when riding great bike Love it
Good stuff! Enjoy....
Your number plate is a little small. UK needs to increase the size by about 10% so you can see it clearly from space with the naked eye.
Haha, it has to officially be tea tray size. If you can’t fit an English afternoon tea with cakes and sandwiches then it’s too small.
😂 😂 😂
I reviewed the same bike and believe I concluded the same
Glad we concur!
the younger generation is so critical.
What has that got to do with this video?
PISH
About what?
no footage of riding it TMF ?
Previous test ride vid....
I have a 2019, one of the best bikes I've owned. My biggest complaint would be the engine braking.
did you remove the baffle?
Nope!
Baffles can be pulled from exhaust for better sound yeah?
Normally yes but I do t recall in this case..sorry
Your Interceptor sounds better than the Akra on this bike
True....
Good Video
Thank you!
Picked mine up earlier this year as an ex demo for a great price. So, so happy with it & compares very favourably to a previous Ducati Monster 1200R. It had all the packs included & dealers appear to be including these now & the quick shifter is great.
Disagree about the riding position as I find it very comfortable & I don't get on well with sports bikes at the age of 53.
Its way more comfortable than my previous Kawasaki H2 SX SE+, which was putting me off biking due to its lack of comfort.
Fitted with a SC Project slip on, it sounds & feels better than the very pricey Akrapovic for much less money.
One real gripe is the turn by turn nav doesn't work as KTM changed the app for it, which now doesn't support the pre 22 versions.
Your mention of the switchgear being good , I agree except for the indicator switch as cancelling them is not very positive at all, but otherwise a great bike I intend to keep for years.
Nice one Colin....
The cooling system is absolutely horrendous. Get used to the fan being on constantly during any warm riding. Other issues, key out of range including other random electronic problems. KTM service is also not too great. My advice if you do buy, check your guarantees and get an A3 of the electrical system, you will need it.
Oh dear - sorry to hear that….
Enjoyed watching this thanks 😁 never owned a ktm but seriously considering one of these ... love the channel too 👍
Thanks! 👍
I really want this to be my next bike. It's so sexy, but the issues people are having with it are putting me off. I ride in all weather and a few hundred miles at a time.
Finally a review I actually learned something. Great job and Thumbs Up all the way!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the info and eye-candy.
Do you record faster than normal? I checked and my playback is normal, but you talk and move very fast as do the leaves on the tree behind you.
Hehe, all normal speed here.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Maybe it's a cultural lag on my part.
:D
Hi TMF I’m in the market for a naked as a second bike ,watched this quite a few times now ,my question is which would you take between this and the old Triumph speed triple I’m torn between them ,im a big lump and love them both 🏍🏍👍👍
You’d be happy with either - I’d personally probably take the last version of the Speed Triple over the superduke
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks Andy there is some half decent deals to be had on them 👍🎉🏍
Snap one up!
Comparing the ride comfort position of Superduke 1290R with S1000RR…which one is comfier? Keep it up, awesome reviews!
Thank you for a great review especially about the Akra slip on. I'm going to delete it from my order - what do you recommend?
What about MPG
The 690 SMCR comes stock with the quick-shifter…. Not sure why the SuperDuke can’t do the same? By the time you buy all the extras, you will have $20,000 in the thing! It’s excellent, but that’s too much money for me… I’ll have to live vicariously through you guys and ride my little SMCR!
Those Akra Euro 4 can are shite. Get one with a removable baffle.
Have you done a review of the 890 duke yet
Nope
Such a beautifully styled bike. Totally love the look!!!
Paint job looks like a dropped pizza, I agree on the exhaust, and I hate piss pots on the bars.....if others can use metal so can everyone. Apart from that its a cracking bike. Not whinging, no one likes a whinger.
Austin racing exhaust (GP1RS) with out the baffle and with the orange tip option. Color etched😎
It looks a lot worse than the previous model, shame coz I really liked it.
absolute brutal honest opinion! love it! thank u!
The power is incredible
It sure is!
Exhaust does sound tame but surly baffles just need removing
Hey Andy, loved the vids on the Super Duke. I hope you get to have a spin on the 890 R. It's an incredible bike and hope to see your thoughts on it on the channel soon!
I hope so too!
Harry Hill?
Your glasses temples match the bike, considering an orange frame?
Great comments. Totally agree with the software upgrades. But it might become even worse in the future. I have heard about car makers considering renting options that are already on their cars...
Whaaat!!
Superduke will all matte black paintscheme and it will look like Batman's Batpod.
Good wrap up on the SDR1290. Has anyone told you look a bit like Elton John with those Sun glasses on?🤣🍺🇦🇺
Oh dear....
In the US, insurance on an s1000r is absolutely brutal. SD for whatever reason is a fraction for full coverage. Makes the price difference easier to stomach.
How odd...
Anyone who bought the 790 knows about getting all the goodies without paying for DLC, hell they are doing the paywall with the 890R and the new replacement to the 790, the 890!
i will still upgrade to the superduke either this or next year after having the gen 1 790 for a couple years now
@TheMissendenFlyer tell me what the front feels like compared to older models?
I couldn't tell any difference - but then I'm not a great rider....
Thanks for another great video. I love that we live in a time with an embarrassment of choice in bikes. For example I have absolutely no use for a bike like this, but isn’t it nice that for people who do, voila.
Clutching at straws for negatives 😉👍
Nothing to do with the KTM, but what mount do you use for your GoPro? Cheers. Excellent series of videos by the way!
Can't remember - apologies!
The new OEM exhaust can is better than the old one but still a BIG NO. Get an Austin Racing or SC project on that beast. Whilst I’m there it would have to have tail tidy, bar end mirrors, Powerparts seat, pillion seat cowl and a few other trinkets.
I've always hated the akra exhaust and this one is no exception. The SC is far better.
Surely even if you were to buy the bike without the features such as quickshifter unlocked, you would still be the paying for the components anyways? As in the price of the bike will surely have that included in it regardless? Wonder who decided this was a good idea.
Yes strange decision to my mind....thanks for watching!
Always buy a KTM November/December time, because of the wahusive discounts. Just bought a GT 13999. down from 17000. Agreed about paying for soft ware releases, quickshifter should be standard as on gt.
Nice one
Over £15.5K and they still want to charge you extra for a quickshifter/blipper!🤦♂️👎
A big Thumbs Up on the correct pronunciation of the Ah-Krap-Oh-Vitch pipe this time Mr Flyer.
Whilst I like that KTM focus on the high performance aspect of their bikes (something that personally appeals), the things that put me off buying one (either new or secondhand) are the numerous and well documented reliability problems they get with gearbox issues and porous crankcases, even at very low mileages. Those are most definitely not easy or cheap fixes, so I feel KTM need to get their act together on that score before bringing out the next new whiz bang model with a big price tag.
Fair enough!
Could you by any chance review the Honda CB500X in near future?
Ooops! Late to the party...
Well, well, well Mr Flyer, you’ve set the cat amongst the pigeons in my world.
Dilemma I’d say, noting your observations it is definitely time to take a test ride post C-19 lockdowns.
TBF... not TMF! You have presented a well balanced and fair appraisal, and if I were a KTM suit, I’d be OK with the review....just need to get bum on seat to compare notes etc.
Having both a BMW and KTM, I too and lets say, brand aware... loyalty? Yes in some way... but when it comes down to the choice of a bike, its as critical as your choice in comfy shoes.
So if you had the choice what would you go for ? The KTM or Ducati ?
Cracking bike, but aaaarrr muurch ? And you have to pay extra for the options, Aaar don't think so...
That camera distorts the image.
Great looking bike and I am it rides like a premium bike... but 16k not sure 🤔
Hey the misseden flyer can you interview Stuart fillingham?
No - not after he made a video falsely accusing me of wrongdoing....I’ve not watched him since...
I bought a computer, but was disappointed to find that you have to pay for software to run on it, even though the hardware is all there. What a rip off.
Same as Amazon Kindle and Firestick. Turns out you have to pay for books and films, even though you bought the hardware. They've already made the books and films, why can't they just let you watch them? Rip off.
Think you're running the analogy a little but far there MyMednas....and being a little bit rude in the process..tut tut!
Was waiting for the mirror comment lol Am liking my little 390, if I go back to one bike for all tasks I'd be tempted to weigh in that and the XSR700 against a 790 Duke......
Sorry Roger...at least I'm consistent!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Consistently good too Andy.
