    It's so bad that the reason is safety :( it breaks my heart to hear this. I know it is true, but it shouldn't be that way.

      ***** I was just saying that as long as someone is comfortable with their voice, they shouldn't feel the need to change it. I definitely have a low voice as a cis woman, and I'm a woman. Period. And so is any trans woman who has any voice.

    • @manoellllle
      @manoellllle 8 років тому +16

      DancesWithBeauty yes that's what I meant! It's just sad that safety is a thing that trans woman have to take in consideration when it comes to their voice.. The only reason should be what they want for themselves. If they don't care about their voice they shouldn't have to worry about it.

      +Schmerp The Lalpacicorn sorry to interject- although im not 100% sure i have a vague memory that everyone hears their voice deeper than it actually sounds because the sound is dulled by the mass of the skull? Ill have to double check, but practically everyone hears their voice deeper than it sounds to others or on recordings.

      Cis female but I can deepen my voice to as deep as a grown man if I want to do voice impressions or convincing prank calls and my regular voice is a bit on the deep side. It probably doesn't help that I hang out with guy friends a lot who have a deep voice. I just want to sound more feminine because right now I don't think I do. I sound like a prepubescent little boy.

    I don't want to seem like a douche, but your low feminine voice is really attractive for some reason. I always thought women with 'lower' voices were hot. EVEN BETTER WHEN RASPY.
    But of course, it's not about me, it's about you feeling better about your own voice. Just wanted to let some (trans)girls out there know that a deep voice can be very sexy! :)

    It's so trippy to hear you talk about how your voice is in your throat vs it being in your chest and as a cis woman I've never had that deep vibration from my chest. Whereas if you put your hands over my dads chest (the most "masc" person person I've ever met in my life) you feel his voice vibrate through his chest to the point that it could spill a glass of water lmao. whereas I don't have that?? It's so cool omg

    • @blablablam100
      @blablablam100 8 років тому +13

      i was thinking the same, my voice (cis woman) is also in my throat. i've never thought about how that's the difference. it'd be interesting to know if this is like... learned behavior or something.

    • @cheyenne1095
      @cheyenne1095 8 років тому +52

      OfficialParagon I'm 100% aware of the reason behind it. I'm just saying it's cool. Was it really necessary to pee on someone's parade to make yourself feel good for a minute?

    • @xoxoxjacqueline
      @xoxoxjacqueline 8 років тому +10

      OfficialParagon my uncle just died. I got into trouble at work yesterday. My older sister recently apologized for touching me inappropriately when we were little but all it did was make me unable to look her in the eye. I'm still being perfectly polite and kind to people though. I understand that people act out, but in my opinion, it's not a free card to take it out on anyone. There's a difference between not being cheerful and not being kind. I'm genuinely sorry if your situation is bad right now though. And I don't think your responses were over the top cruel or anything like that (a little on the rude side perhaps but that's it), but I just disagreed with your last comment to be clear.

    • @xoxoxjacqueline
      @xoxoxjacqueline 8 років тому

      OfficialParagon I said that I didn't think your responses were that bad. Even if they were and you said something a lot worse, I agree that people shouldn't take a stranger on the internet to heart. My only point was that I don't think people should make excuses for other people lol. I mean unless it's super hard NOT to take a stranger's comments to heart. Whatever helps you I guess. :)

    • @cheyenne1095
      @cheyenne1095 8 років тому +12

      OfficialParagon you might have a reasoning behind acting like a jerk, but that's never an excuse to be one. If you have personal issues, you need to work on learning how to cope in other ways than being rude to others. Go for a walk, paint a picture, throw a glass against a wall, but get off of UA-cam.

    I can't imagine having to train my voice to sound more feminine or masculine (depending on the person) as a cis gender female. I didn't even realized trans women or men have to consciously change their voice to pass, though I should have realized how else would their voice change to match their gender to say. Every time I watch Stef's videos my respect and admiration for transgender people just raise even more.

    I feel like Stef looks a lot more soft and feminine in this video than any of the others. Maybe it's the continued effect of hormone therapy, or the long loose hair and loose clothing, or the softer-coloured makeup in this video. Just my opinion.

I just adore you so much, you're so friendly and personable and you're not afraid to be yourself, you can be silly and crazy and just not give a care about what others think about your personality and the things you do. You're amazing Bread Mom!

  • @SarahLJP
    @SarahLJP 8 років тому +60

    I think it helps to be young. Testostrone continually affects your body and your voice keeps getting deeper. It may be harder for trans women that transition later in life. I started relatively young at 30 and my voice was never very deep to begin with. I still don't feel great about my voice sometimes. I haven't been misgendered in years so it's obviously not as bad as I think it is.

    • @nothere5114
      @nothere5114 8 років тому +2

      Yeah, I remember hearing somewhere that your voice is actually higher than it sounds in your own head.

    • @SarahLJP
      @SarahLJP 8 років тому +6

      I do record myself sometimes to check how other people hear me. I haven't done that in a while until recently. Even when I think I sound pretty good I'm still kind of paranoid that it's not good enough. Though, as I said I haven't been misgendered in years so it's most likely all in my head.

    • @Amy-dl9vx
      @Amy-dl9vx 8 років тому +3

      ickalo It has something to do with being able to hear your voice through the reverb your bones cause. I know that sounds completely ridiculous, but that's why.

    • @EclipseStar
      @EclipseStar 8 років тому +1

      I don't really think so. I think if your voice has dropped already, you probably need to train anyway. Some people just don't drop down that far as much as others I think that is where the difference comes from.

    • @SarahLJP
      @SarahLJP 8 років тому +2

      ***** I never said I didn't train my voice. I do train my voice. Otherwise I would probably be misgendered. It's just that because I'm relatively young my voice hadn't dropped as much as if I transitioned later in life. Old men's voices are deeper than younger men's.

      A little tip when doing that: relax relax relax. It was really tempting to try to force my voice to go just a liiittle bit deeper by straining (it still is sometimes) but that can hurt your vocal chords. Also humming down scales is helpful. And practicing when not wearing a binder will have better results because of how much air is required for low tones. Good luck!!

We care so much about vocal health in the trans and non-binary populations to help their find authentic, identity-confirming voice (and cis people too, when their voice pitch doesn't match their identity either!). Some of what you covered here was great, I loved it! Some of it, though, worried me for vocal health - for example, focusing too much on keeping the voice "in the throat" can create issues down the road. I hope that the idea of seeing an SLP isn't so terrifying that people would avoid it. It's tough enough to get medical attention, I can only imagine how hard it is to take the step to see someone like an SLP. But we care so much & are here for anyone who needs it! Love you, best of luck recovering from the surgery! xo

While a lot of people compliment me on my deep voice too and tell me it's special, I still feel self conscious. I have been mistaken for a man on the phone for example. But then again it's really exhausting to talk in a high voice so most of the time I just let it be.

    This is perfectly explained honestly you pretty much explained it exactly how a vocal teacher would for singing or breathing, if you really focus on breathing you will be able to use what is called your head voice which is where sopranos are - a higher voice, so for starting voice training breathing more as well as visualizing where your voice is coming from will make it incredibly easy to train for higher octaves. Your progress is insane stef, I am so proud of you

    I used to do that voice pitch up and down run when I worked in telemarketing.
    Women tend to respond best when you mimic their own voice and way of speaking, younger men tended to respond better to more excited, girlish pitches and past a certain middle age male customers usually respond best to a slightly deeper, mellow pitch.
    As much as telemarketing sucked as a job, getting to try out different voices all day was fun.

    Interestingly, people subconsciously change the pitch of their voices all of the time. I've noticed that when I feel nervous, anxious, or challenged/threatened, and I want to appear confident/dominant, I lower my voice. When I want to appear submissive or non-threatening, gracious, or just approachable I raise the pitch and sound like a little girl. Think Paris Hilton, but less stupid. I read somewhere that women typically raise the pitch of their voices when flirting. I've found that I do the complete opposite! Just goes to show you- there's no "normal" way to sound. Just do what feels right to you.

      @mandles. 8 років тому +8

      Thats what she means, its just a concept that most people have an idea of what "feminine" is but its not a concrete thing and can change from person to person. By saying "whats commonly known as" shes talking about the conventional societal ideas about femininity and what it means to be feminine/look feminine, but that might not fit everyones definition of feminine since, like you said, its a social construct.

    • @mandles.
      @mandles. 8 років тому +7

      Its just nice to see someone refer to it that way, letting the viewer know she doesn't necessarily subscribe to the idea of conventional femininity being the only definition, but its useful for describing things because everyone is familiar with our society's definition of it.

    I realize I'm coming in a bit late here. But as a singer and music teacher I can explain your vocal levels. You have chest, throat, head and some people's voices go above the typical head voice. For voice training for the ears, I always have people do what's called the "siren". Basically you're vocalizing each part of what an ambulance siren would sound like. Where I have them start depends on if they're male or female and what their speaking voice pitch is. Lower pitches start in the middle, higher start in the lower ranges. If their starting pitch is in the middle, or 1st tenor, then I usually start with their throat voice. Training your voice for either singing or voice feminization isn't all that different.

  • @QuestionableLifeChoices

    As a server in the food industry, I have found these voice training videos very helpful. I am not a trans person, and I do not utilize these skills for this purpose. However, I have found these exercises to be very beneficial for my skills as a server. When utilizing these skills in my idustry, I find that these exercises help maintain a calmer, more compassionate facade towards my guests. It helps make them feel more comfortable, I feel, and in turn reflects on my guests' gratuity. One particular thing I loved about your previous video is the enunciation/flow of my speech. I have noticed a lot more compliments on my clarity when taking calls for togo orders. I just wanted to thank you for these videos, because it has helped me immensely at my work. Always keep your goals real! It will help you obtain them!
