    Hi. I've spent hours trying to figure out how to connect my Samsung T3 SSD to my Nvidia Shield and I felt a bit foolish when you showed me that I had to plug in the drive with the Shield turned off. Some times it's the small stuff that gets you. Now I need to find out how to move my apks and such over to the SSD. Hopefully you've already done a video and it is in your library of videos. Today is my first time seeing anything that you've done and I've got to say that I liked it, subscribed and rang the bell. Thanks and I'll talk to you soon.

    You can move the system to a external HDD, so the 2.TB becomes the "internal drive".
    A feature added late in year 2016 or so. I used same external HDD for 5 years as internal space with no problems.

    My Shield runs Oreo now, and have a 128 GB USB 3.1 flash SSD formatted for device storage, and a 2 TB SSD USB 3.1 formatted as removable storage. It is amazing. I've only had 2 issues. Plex Media server is now a system app, and, although you have an option to move a portion of the data to shared internal, or removable storage, it really isn't recommended. Currently the PMS app is taking up 6 GB of the 16 GB available. Also, I've had all kinds of issues when I had ES File Explorer installed. Nvidia Support suggested a factory reset, and re-installing apps slowly to identify when things acted up. ES File Explorer seemed to be the culprit. I use a different app since OREO for Sideloading and have not had these issues since then. It could be a combination of apps that were the issue, I can't be certain, but, I don't see issues now.

    I found to get it to have full access to my 5TB drive I had to first connect the device so it would write the default Shield files, then eject and add any other folders via PC I wanted (for some reason I can't seem to find a file explorer that does more than just read, which is stupid but makes sense when you consider all the protection content owners demand on writable devices), anyway, any folders go into the Nvidia_Shield folder, and then it will read and write to the folder, but ONLY in that folder, it will not access any other folder for writing purposes.

  • @yemarican

    First, Thank you so much for your time and for sharing all of this with us. I appreciate that.
    I have a question... why does the hard drive say expansion on it? is there a difference between it and just an external hard drive or is it just the way it was pre formatted?
    One more question actually ... I have never heard of this Nvidia Shield thing.. but will it play all sorts of media files from a 2TB WD external hard drive?
    Thanks again and have a great day.

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  4 роки тому +1

      yemerican the expansion drive is just an external hard drive...the name “expansion” is more about marketing. The expansion no different from other external hard drives. The Nvidia Shield is the highly recognized best streaming device that can play apps from the play store. The Shield is great for streaming and there is no lag with a decent internet connection.

    If I download Google drive App on NVIDIA Shield, do you think I can choose the connected external drive as the cloud drive? because the 16 or 32 Giga Byte internal storage of NVIDIA Shield is not enough!

  • @orestesdd
    @orestesdd 6 років тому

    One more question, if I want to use a hard drive as INTERNAL, how big of a hard drive would you recommend to use as INTERNAL? And thank you once again for your other answers.

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому +1

      If you use a hard drive for internal storage plan for enough room for all the installed apps, games, etc. that you have plus more to expand. I only have 16GB internal and it requires me to move downloads quickly to my external drive.
      I think the answer is specific to how you use the device. Since hard drives are so reasonable in price get the bigger size so you don't "outgrow" it and hate yourself later :) The Shield Pro is 500 GB so if you want to do better than their pro model go for a 1-2 TB (1TB and 2TB are so close in cost). Even though you may not touch all the space you install...it is SO nice not to worry about running out of space. Good Luck!

    ES File explorer has been removed from the play store. If you really want it, you’ll need to side load it. I’m sure someone like @Troypoint has instructions. That dude is awesome for all things like sideloading and Kodi etc.
    The issue with external storage not found happened to me after a Shield update. Completely messed my 2TB drive up and I lost about 600GB of media. Bit the bullet and re formatted the drive and it’s recognised again.
    Shield updates are annoying as once it also removed some apps and their data, I was fuming 😡. Onwards and upwards.

    I purchased a 2TB Toshiba external hard drive USB 3 as an extension. Attached it to the Shield, formatted it, it did its thing. Worked for about 1 hour, then the Wifi dropped out - it was working on all other devices, then the Shield totally failed. Blue screen on the TV. Turned everything off, including at the power point. Still a blank blue TV screen. Finally ejected the Toshiba, turned everything off. When it started everything was back (except of course the apps that had been stored on the Toshiba). Any ideas what caused this? The Shield is the 2019 TV Pro 3gb ram and 16gb storage.

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому +3

      Make sure it is formatted and ES File explorer is installed on the Shield. Perhaps reboot before you plug in the Seagate...then try. Also test the cable...try plugging into a PC to see if the PC can "see" the drive. If the PC can see the drive you know the cable/drive is fine and the issue is within the Shield. I didn't have any issues with my drive being recognized right away. give an update when you try a few things.

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  5 років тому +1

      In the video I demonstrated how the file explorer looks without the drive connected, I then plug it in and it starts rebooting because I touched the "on" button or the top of the unit with the touch sensitive "on" switch. You can see the unit booting up on the video.... For you at home you will not need to have the unit on to shoot the "before" portion of a video like I did. Power should be off, then plug in the drive, turn the unit on.

      I have never taken my Shield apart to see if the ram is expandable, great question! If you want to increase the number of USB ports you can purchase a multi port port hub and plug that into the USB port of the Shield, thus expanding how many devices you can connect to it.

    Can you please explain something; Will the shield see the USB drive as internal or external storage? I mean, when i download apps or anything else to the shield, will it install those apps to the 2tb drive or to the 16gb built in storage?
    Because if the hooked up USB drive is only usable for music and movies then it won't be nothing special.

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  7 років тому

      The USB drive is an external storage device and the Shield will see it as such. If you download anything it will go to your internal 16 GB "built in" storage. I download files and manually move them over to the external drive...it works for me, everyone has different preferences. Since I only want to store my media files like movies, music, music videos,etc. it made sense to me.

      My Shield was rooted with Android 6, this must be why. I also noted that my NEW Shield (I bough a second one) did not recognize the hard drive the same way the rooted Shield did, I chose to place the hard drive connected to my Netgear router and connect both Shields to it with SMB networking protocol built into Kodi. I am still trying a few other things to see if I can do anything different as I really do like it connected to the Shield directly. Since adding a second Shield to the house the networked method is pretty awesome too....both can access the content equally so Kodi always has media available on either device.

  • @izri1

    Do you notice a decrease in speed on the Shield with the external drive?
    I was thinking to buy an ssd to use a internal storage. Or would it be stupid if it's not going to make any difference?
    I want the Shield speed to stay the same and not getting less. Not even by 1%.

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому

      I use the external drive to play all my media - I use Kodi... and the movies,music, and music videos load and work just fine. I don't see a difference in how it worked prior to using the external drive for storage. I don't think you would gain anything in using the SSD - my opinion. It depends maybe on what your use case will be however.

    • @izri1
      @izri1 6 років тому

      Thanks a lot for the answer. I was thinking of using the external drive as internal storage. Download all the apps and games apps to it and start the apps from there.I know just playing media is no issue with an external drive.

      When you connect the drive your are prompted to use it as internal storage or not...I can't recall the exact prompts displayed, but yo are able to leave it as external or set it up as internal. If you choose to make the drive internal I believe you loose the original internal storage (the new HD becomes the internal). I wish you could ADD the exernal HD to the existing internal storage...but it appears not so! Let me know how it goes! good luck.

      Since the drive is plugged into a USB drive it is considered removable storage, not sure why ES File Explorer is not seeing the drive and allowing you to select it , perhaps your issue is due to a different firmware and OS. (note: I am on Android 6 with a rooted shield)

      I use "TV launcher", my Shield is rooted and I removed the Nvidia Shield GUI. I didn't want the gaming ability since I only intended to use the hardware to do my streaming, other streaming boxes failed to stream without buffering issues, the Shield is robust enough to handle the task perfectly. You don't have to root with Android only like I did, it is totally preference.

    How do I make the drive as part of the internal storage I am at 98% and I can't get my shield to use the external drive to install new apps to. It states it is full and can't do anything?

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому +2

      When you connect the external drive to the Shield for the first time, (have ES File Explorer installed first)...you should be prompted with a message on screen asking " Do you want to assign the drive as INTERNAL Storage" (a message similar to that). When you make that selection the drive becomes the internal drive and the existing internal space of the Shield will become unusable.
      I don't think you can install an App to external storage, that is your problem also. Move some of your non-app files off the internal storage, (perhaps upload to your Google Drive folder for temporary storage). Then you can use the internal drive for Apps only....and movies, video files, etc. can be on the external drive. The other option is to allow the external drive to become the internal drive by selecting the option when you first plug it in and get the prompt to make a selection.

      I formatted my drive on my LAPTOP first using NTFS as the file system. Your laptop will see the drive after this....when you plug it into the Shield the ES File Explorer App will "see" this also. (note: I am on Android 6 with a rooted shield)
      good luck!

    • @renkoperma
      @renkoperma 5 років тому +1

      When you format a USB drive as internal storage, it becomes encrypted to your SHIELD TV and can no longer be used interchangeably with other devices such as personal computers or cameras. Alternatively, you can set up your USB drive as removable storage for sharing files. However, you cannot install apps and games to removable storage. You can no longer use this USB drive to share content between SHIELD TV and your PC without formatting.

    What benefits does rooting a shield get you? Also how do you even root a Shield?

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому

      I only wanted a streaming device without the gaming features, so by rooting I only have the apps (APK's) that I want installed. I also don't have the (in my opinion) heavy GUI layer that Nvidia uses and that I don't like/didn't want. I run Android 6.0 and everything runs solid for me, its a personal preference and I love the interface I get with my launcher. To root a shield you can do a Google search, find the correct files that match your firmware version, etc. Be careful or you may brick your unit if your not sure on how to do the root.

      It’s hard to say how the TV is accessing the drive. It sounds like it is reading and stopping ..and that’s going to happen with a Shield. The Shield may read to recognize and stop until accessing content, the TV may want a more frequent “connect and check” reference. All speculation of course.

    hi , i had a good mess around with ext HD and shield this morning , here's what i find. The HDD is a "WD My Passport Ultra 2TB" usb drive. When i plug it in , it shows in ES explorer below "internal storage and below the current 28mb usb stick i have permanently plugged in as "internal storage ". the WD is listed as 3007 am not using a mouse so i cant left click but pressing OK on remote , it says "open in new tab" when i do it says "failed to open". If I long press on OK it gives me two options "OPEN or UNMOUNT " selecting open it says "cannot open " , selecting "unmount" it unmounts the drive. My drive is formatted "ExFAT" which is supposed to work with the shield as far as i am aware? I have 3 other different make drives and none of those will work with the shield either. I did once last year get a drive to show when inserted into shield but it would not let me write to it so that was basically useless to.

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  7 років тому

      That is one thing I wished it would do also - go to sleep. You have to power off the Shield if you want to drive powered off also. Yes, anything that runs will wear out faster than if it can "rest" (power off).

    I hooked up a 2tb Seagate to my nVidia shield. When I put the nVidia to sleep the hard drive keeps running but after a while the solid blue light starts to flash. Is this normal? When I unplug everything goes off obviously but when I replug, it takes about 20 mins before all the apps are accessible again so this method is not really user friendly. Presumably, it is not a good idea to unplug? Any help much appreciated......

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому +1

      I leave my Shield powered on all the time so my drive light is always on also. The unfortunate thing is that the USB port stays powered on even when the Shield is in sleep mode...thus our drives are always powered up. • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому

      I read again and see that the 20 mins for your apps to work after plugging in the drive.....you must have set the external drive to function as internal storage, correct? My apps all load fine if I unplug my external HD, because it is NOT set up as internal, it is used as external storage only (movies, videos, music, Pics).

    • @davewade6742
      @davewade6742 6 років тому

      Yes, you are right because when I look at the %'s used it used to show around 40% internal but now after adding the Seagate it is around 0.02%. Can I reverse this in the Settings storage settings?

    • @LazyDayz316
      @LazyDayz316  6 років тому

      I have never performed that function, but as everything goes it must be something that CAN be done. I would suggest searching for a specific video on how to convert your unit back to using the original storage to internal and the exterior HD to external storage...if you desire to. The one benefit is that all the apps wont take 20 min to load if you unplug, and you gain all the external storage while holding onto the original internal storage. good luck!

Since I have not tried using the Shield to format I can't say how to do so. As long as you select the EXTERNAL drive when formatting you should be fins....just DON'T select the internal storage and select "format".. that would wipe out the data on it.

      Not so much an increase but if you use the external drive to install and run apps it MAY cause a decrease in response...Nvidia states this. I chose to use my hard drive to stream movies from and not run apps because it made sense that I wouldn’t need more internal drive storage for tons of apps. If I left click on "USB3003" it prompts me with "Allow the app to access the USB device?" Use by default for this device is an option box to check. I just did this and the drives moves from being recognized as an SD to a USB device. I powered off, unplugged the drive, powered up again (without the drive plugged in) and ES only showed the internal storage as it should. I then plugged the drive in and it defaulted back to being a "SD". All that said - you can choose to change the drive as stated above, I just left mine as the default "SD". Do you think changing yours to "USB" will help your situation? Hi Joe, I have one external drive (2TB) plugged into the USB 3.0 port of the Shield, that is all. I have folders on the drive with my movies and music....in Kodi I have those folders mapped (to import into Kodi to index, pull meta data, fan art, etc). That is all I am doing. As long as the path to the folders is correct in Kodi, the media will play regardless of the ES File explorer "name" (either "SD" or USB3003".

    If you buy the Shield just to stream Kodi would you say not to buy it? Right now I bought the Shield and a Reveal Box. I haven’t opened the Shield yet in cause I want to send it back to Amazon. I also bought the NETGEAR Nighthawk X10. What do I do?

      I tried many other Android Boxes before settling on the Shield, others failed to stream anything without stuttering and buffering. The Shield can handle anything I have thrown at it. My personal opinion is to keep the Shield, return the other Android box. Note: I run a rooted Shield on Android 6. good luck!

      James Hildreth dude The Shield is like night and day compared to any other box that I have used for streaming, regardless of whether you just streaming Kodi or doing other stuff keep the Nvidia Shield, it's worth every penny

      I have only tried this drive on my Shield, I would still give it a try.

    Simple? Oh, no. The port knows there is something there but ES File can't see the files inside. So, questions: Must the drive be 3.0 to be recognized? I have an older Seagate 1TB 2.0 drive. Must it be formatted NTFS? I found info in the Nvidia Forum stating that my HFS+ formatting should have worked but it didn't. Bought converter software for Mac to reformat the disk to NTFS but still no joy. My drive uses external power, should it be unpowered? None of these problems seem like they should be fatal yet they are. Does anything jump out at you to make this drive work? Thanks!

      Hi Jake: I formatted to NTFS and yes, the USB port on the shield is 3.0 as is the drive a USB 3.0. My drive don't use external power, so I wonder if that is causing you issue? (i.e. the USB 3.0 port trying to power your drive and you already having a power supply) I don't have an older drive around anymore to test with (see if USB 2.0 fails). I HAVE plugged in a 2.0 flash drive and it worked just fine however... I know not the same thing as a HD. I don't have any other ideas....anyone out there able to jump in and share on this one??

      Also wondering how you would watch a movie. The Shield's main purpose for me (aside from watching Amazon Prime and MLB.tv) is to play my movies that I have converted to MKV's. Looks like Kodi should work (but it can't see the movies on the HD). Just signed up to Plex to use Plex Server and trying to add one to my library to watch. I ordered a Seagate 3.0 HD this morning from Amazon but thought I'd try to get this older one working, which is how I stumbled onto your great video. Back to playing with Plex for now. Maybe I'll have some luck with that. Good thing I'm retired so I have time for this stuff. Thanks!

      I use Kodi to view my movies just fine, some are MKV's others MP4. The newer 3.0 drive works great for me....best of luck!

      So, Nvidia support just got back to me to say that USB 3.0 is "not mandatory". Haven't had to deal with file structure since 1993 when I went all Mac so Plex is a bust, too, can't figure out how to get a movie on my computer to the Plex library through the website. I suspect I am doing something wrong but don't know what.

      I had tons of problems getting my NTFS format hard drives working. What working for me was putting it into the USB port next to the HDMI and pull the power cord out for 1 min.

      I use mine only for media storage, music, videos, pics, and it does great. You can not load an App from the external drive. When you plug in the drive you are given a choice to make the external drive the "NEW" storage drive totally. If you do this, it becomes the entire new INTERNAL drive, which is of course larger, but it disables the internal storage the device came with. Those are the two options. 1. Make the external drive the NEW internal drive 2. Configure the external drive to be an extra drive for storage (external) while keeping the Shield's internal memory for downloaded and installed apps, etc.

      You can add apps to the drive I think. TechDoctorUK UA-cam channel said the other week in the video ANDROID TV SSD DRIVE UPGRADE (INSANE SPEED)
      I'll leave a link to the video below but not sure if you can see it so if not just look up the video I've said and he shows you

      The Shield has a USB 3.0 port that provides power for the drive as well as move the data. Check the drives specs to see if will work on a USB 3.0 device.

    Need help please. I have an older 500 GB external hard drive i used to use with Dish Network as a sort of 😴DVR..I was told I could plug this into the shield and watch the programs i have on there. I plugged into the shield and it says safety ejected. What do I do now??
    Help. Thanks in advance

      It depends on the formatting choice you used on the hard drive if it will work or not on the Shield. I used NTFS formatting and it allows me to unplug it and add content then plug it back in and function just fine. Plug yours in to see if you can use it, if not.... you could move your content to another storage device and format your 500GB drive to NTFS and move it back over to the drive. Let me know how it goes.
