On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

So as mentioned at the end of the video, This is technically not the channel map, I believe it was Kuban actually, but I just wanted to get a feel for the whole Battle Of Britain thing, and also as shown at the end of the video there is a channel map coming to IL-2 so maybe once that drops we can do some more BoB content there. Thanks for watching guys and much love.
Looks like you're having a lot of fun, How does someone get to join in?
You got a pretty nice rig but what VR headset are you using?
Excellent content.
The game is fantastic as is the presentation.
Your narration is why I keep returning.
Thank You
Do you prefer cannons or a battery of machine guns like on the Hurricane?
Channel/Normandy map has now dropped
I am actually lucky enough to know a Spitfire pilot who flew Spitfires from 1941 to the end of the war. He also flew the Hurricane, Blenheim and Defiant. He said he once flew a Spitfire through a double doored aircraft hangar! I said what did your CO say - he said he did it first! He also flew a Spitfire under the Forth bridge. He reckoned you wouldn't have been able to flew a Hurricane through a hangar as is got squirrely at very low level. He was shot down twice and has so many great tales. Still pretty sharp at 99 years old and an honour to chat to every time :)
Tell him we all said hi and good show Old Chap! Seriously we owe his generation our lives and our freedoms!
You should try to get him on video telling his part of history while you and he still can...
Regards to him.
@@debbiestimac5175 thank you I will :)
@@BushidoDevilDog I should have done on the first meeting really, we talked aeroplanes all evening!
It’s a shame that Il-2 is unappreciated by so many in the DCS family. The airplane choices are so good.
Well I always unappreciated Il-2 because for most time I thought this game is literally only about plane IL-2 💀
I started with IL2, but after over 100 hours in DCS with warbirds, it felt really unimpressive to go back to IL2, so I stopped it, as of now IL2 is WW1 only for me.
Honestly im trying to get into it but some in the community are ridiculously toxic
@@goddtzu4008 same
I really want to get the p38 and use a yoke. I still have no idea why that fighter had a yoke, but I think it would be really fun to try.
I’m actually really loving how GS is trying out new things - new sims, planes etc. I’m actually really looking forward to all that - maybe the channel would get more diversified… Which I wouldn’t be opposed to at all ; )
Keep up the great work!
Totally agree.
@@NatedoGP You should see him in a Hind or an Iroquois. Hilarity ensues and always excellent to watch.
Jeez, and to think RAF pilots were flying 4-5 sorties a day is just mind-blowing. Takes some level of stamina and endurance to pull that off.
Well these were very young men, 18-23 most of them. When you want stamina and endurance, those are the guys to look for! 😁
@@-Zevin- Wow I never could have guessed that German and Russian pilots would fly for that long. But I completely agree, compared to modern fighters a Prop plane is much more hands on. Your also experiencing all those G's with the only protection being a fairly basic G suit. Its often forgotten how intense some campaigns were, especially those away from the wester theatre of war.
@@debbiestimac5175 Yup there really wasn't anyone better for the job. Those guys could fly for a year with some adrenaline and a dream. Its some seriously impressive stuff and mind-blowing how intense some of these dogfights could get.
Stamina, and quite a bit of benzedrine.
@@debbiestimac5175 Gonna be that guy: That's what she said...
How natural and comfortable is to be able to look "anywhere" freely thanks to VR. Sad ending but amazing vid. Subscribed to see more VR content in the future, love it.
This old warbird content is so much more exciting than jets
That’s the exact reason I purchased IL-2 over any DCS modules. WW2 dogfights in VR are just so much more satisfying.
@@Edgins275 Same. I was hooked on DCS, flying a computer for ages, learning all the procedures to fly an A10. Went back to have a look at IL2 (in VR), tried flying with a squad (Air Attack) in MP and had more fun in five minutes than I had in DCS for a year. There is no comparison. I only use DCS for helicopters now.
Awesome video, as always. Really enjoying the WW2 content and the IL-2 gameplay. A patient of mine was 6-years-old during the Battle of Britain. She can still recall watching the Hurricanes and Spitfires duelling with the 109’s and 190’s in the skies above her hometown. Her mother had to rush her and her siblings inside to keep them from being killed by falling debris. I can only imagine what that must have been like. Watching the deadly ballet in a digital battlefield makes for a nice substitute.
IL2: Cliffs of Dover (The actual Battle of Britain sim) is very soon getting new cloud tech and VR. I hope you check it out again when it arrives.
They’re updating VR again?
Love that you’re diversifying so much! You should do a small IL2 career
When I was a kid my dentist had a burned face. He was one of the original ‘guinea pigs’, the first recipients of plastic facial surgery after being shot down in his Spitfire, BoB. Thank you Dr Hancock.
I love how the Hurricane and Spitfire went from having some of the weakest weapons in the .303, to one of the strongest in the Hispano 20mm
Hurricane gun convergence was set at around 250-300 yards, a fighter wingspan should just touch the edges of the reticle. Assuming the game is histerically (sic) accurate, that's when you're gonna get 303 shredding
Spitfires were like the Mazda RX7, but Hurricanes were the huge Dodge RAM trucks. Built like tanks.
Of course, neither of them is a Mosquito, but not all aircraft could be :)
Also: You just persuaded me to buy IL-2, and got a sub o7
An IL2 campaign would be fun to watch.
Hey GS, keep up the good work! love what you do!
thank you Caleb I appreciate it man.
Much love from me too!
hey GS, really love your vids. Been a sub for about six months now and I have to say, you're a pretty good shot in comparison to a lot of other flying related youtubers.
Any chance you can show a Battle of Britian sortie as an Allied pilot that you survive?
Keep up the great content!
Hi Steve thank you man and yes I will do plenty of Battle of Britain stuff and I’ll do my best to survive
AWAYS the best notification of the day, the great GS, AWSOME BRO
When you saw one of your last buddies up there tumbling away after being shot down, I said to myself, "He needs to break off and head for those clouds to the west and back home, those 109s are all above him and can easily out climb that Hurricane... he's going to be brave instead, but will still end up dead." RIP Flight Leftenant Growling, The Few would have been proud to have known you, someone who goes once again into the breach, instead of running away to live another day.
You’re correct that absolutely was the correct call to make George.
@@GrowlingSidewinder George? The only George I know of is that Japanese fighter from late in WWII. Is that a Canadian term for The Peanut Gallery? 😜
Thanks for the flight sim info. I have to admit I’m an old dude who gave up the combat air sim stuff in the mid 90s. Partly due to limited sim selection and partly due to Army stuff. Well, here I am sufficiently F’d up from combat from 2001-2010 with nothing to do. This IL-2 sim looks fantastic and the VR sounds intriguing. The WWI flights are a huge bonus! Thanks for posting your set up info, I’m checking what I can afford and on it. Any advice? Thanks again.
The VR videos are way better than the conventional videos. Love the WW1 VR videos best.
So chaotic that it just made it looked like a ton of mosquitos having dogfight.
VR makes me really excited for the microprose B17 game in development right now
Mann u r such a calm pilot and im learning a lot from ur vids.Had i done this video, more than 90 percent of it would have to be censored due to cursing.I curse whn shooting, when enemy gets lit up,when i get shot, when i look back, when I cruise basically everytime lol.Anyway keep up the good work man.Cheers
Not long found your channel GS love the vids so subscribed Cheers.
the smoke and fire effects are pretty awesome!
Fantastic stuff, GS. Please keep more of this WW2 content flowing.
Played this sim years ago only thing that let it down for me was the sounds of the engines… thx god for sound mods lol
btw, the explosion you saw was an ammunition detonation. It happens some times, you when it does, you get those pretty fireworks you saw
I'm amazed at the graphics here. And in VR???
Holy cow. I'd NEVER get any work done!
Stanley Hooker of Rolls Royce said in his book that in the BoB that the Luftwaffe only had to bomb their one factory at Derby (the only Merlin engine factory) that the RAF would have ceased operations in a few weeks.
Figures, I get decent at IL-2 when you don't play it for months and when I'm too busy to play you drop dope content and I can't go play much if at all.
Pulling up when hit, you’d be a sitting duck. Overshooting after firing, you’d be dead.
GS fires his 8x 303s at an FW190: "Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!"
GS: "Wow - That's a nice fire... He's gonna be well done by the time he hits the ground."
Me: Yikes! That's dark bro.
Oh, great, the Ba'le of Bri'ain :)
13:32 There should be one coming with Flying Circus eventually as well for WWI stuff since Rise of Flight has it.
The "Harry Kane" cockpit really is extremely cramped, I guess even more so than the 109s. Really something you'll just experience in VR.
The only thing I hate about Il-2 in VR is the fact that the collimated reticle in any aircraft is practically invisible. They really need to change that somehow by giving an option so you don't have to sit in the exact sweet spot to be able to see it just barely. I can see them soooo much easier in the few DCS WWII modules we have, it's genuinely a night and day difference!
Checking six in many WWII aircraft is very tough. The Russian A/C are an exception.
Check out Finnish Server multiplayer on IL-2. It's dope. Super realistic, and the aircraft choices change from early to late war as the seasons progress. Dynamic battlefield, air resupply to objectives, etc.
Even in WWII, GS can't avoid getting shot in the face.
Lold
@@GrowlingSidewinder Dude, I saw the last dogfight that you and Longshot collab'd on on his channel and even he shot you in the face. You have the worst luck in surviving shoot-downs
Wow I felt that one GS. Nice work
That was INCREDIBLE combat! I cannot wait to get my PC and play!
GS tries IL2, how cool are you getting bro ? Very Cool !!! Awesome
lol....he's gonna be well done by the time he hits the ground....classic.....:)
"Leave the flaming fighters, it's the bloody bombers we want!"
Hey mate! Now, if isn't too much harder than a normal Track IR video to produce, I'd personally LOVE to see most videos hereafter in VR. I just feel like you fight SO much better in VR.
Just bought the murder hornet sweatshirt, it is probably one of the most comfortable sweatshirts I have had!
Thats great news thank you for supporting the channel and glad you like it. Much Love.
All your videos are great but really enjoying these WWII ones.
Thank you John, more WW2 to come brother.
I am having so much fun in this sim!!! DCS is great but the fun factor is completely different.
I'm surprised you lasted as long as you did flying the Hurricane.
Checking six on Hurricanes is almost futile, because the armor blocks rear vision.
It is why you perform a clearing turn regularly.
Hi Debbie - You are indeed right.
For me, the Hurricane is very slow and clearing turns further decrease it’s speed. I fly it in “Aces High” and one available option is 12 x .303’s instead of eight! Love it.
@Growling Sidewinder if you've never seen the documentry series "The world at war" I suggest you do so. It is by far the best WWII DS in existance.
This is Gold... Please stay gold.
An Fw 190 in the Battle Of Britain? The Ju 87s looked like later marks too.
They are also introducing new cloud tech soon that looks fantastic. I have adored Il-2 since their very early sims. I just need to get off my butt and ask GVL to make me a proper throttle for use in VR.
.303 ammo in ww2. The universal cartridge for the British military lmao
That aircraft looks like it's already an antique with that model. I'd guess that airplane should look relatively new.
@Growling Sidewinder
Dude, I'd LOVE to see some dogfights against the F-35!!
Is the F-35 available on DCS? Can you show us (A) you piloting it against other fighters and (B) you piloting other fighters against it?
I mean, I'd LOVE to see how it compares to the F-15, F-16, Su-35, etc...
Great video keep the WW2 content coming please.
I trust you got a posthumous VC there. RIP
Get closer before you open up with .303s. You aced the first Stuka when you got close 3:40
Seems like a few 20mm found their mark at the end .
Other air combat is chaotic too, but BoB even more so, I call it "intense chaos".
You fire at a Heinkel, look behind you and nothing, check fue.. PLINGPLONGBOFF = Hits on your wing and a 109 whistles past, daheck did he come from??
Only ever had that kind of chaos in BoB scenarios, other scenarios are clinical in comparison.
Rather the 109 had a 20mm in the prop hub. They need to fix the Hurricane in that stage of the war, that when it went negative G's the engine should splutter. The battle looks legit very intense.
Great production. I'd love to get into VR combat flight simulation. I have no knowledge, no gear, and a 1200.00 budget. With that in mind could you make some recommendations? Thanks
How would you like your 190 rare, medium rare, medium or well done? Growing: BURNT!
Hey bro, how are you recording your VR? Have you done a video about that? I have done it before but it turns out weird. Any advice would help.
What are you using for VR? Oculus? I’ve been looking at this game for a while but I’m hesitant due to comments about VR not being great. I run a 2080S and 3800x.
Battle of Britain?
There were a few Hurricane IIs at the end of the battle but most of it was fought with Is, but no Fw-190s. Battle over Britain maybe.
Is this cliffs of dover blitz? i’m assuming that because that is the battle of Britain. i’m curious bc i wanna know if it’s VR supported.
If the Luftwaffe had had 190's in 1940 it might have been a different story...
what's the most popular mid priced joystick now?...I had a Saitek X45 when i was flying CFS1 2 and 3
Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS HOTAS, priced 100$ to 150$ depending where you buy it.
Also the VKB Gladiator NXT, if you just want a stick and no left hand throttle, priced 140$ to 180$ in their website (note: can also be combined with separate throttle).
subbed.
303s were quick just not heavy enough as compared to 20mm cannon on the 109s
Do you play in VR or is it just how you move your camera around??
Great flying to stay alive that long 😁
I know its an old video but when you play in vr do you need to use mouse and keyboard or is it fully vr compatible
Can you describe how this mission was created? You need the channel map i guess but is this a custom mission or part of a campaign i am not aware of?
Sturmovic? It never looked this good. Was it always there and the hardware wasn't ready, or is this a new engine?
Wow, intense! Thanks GS
I don't get why they didn't fly the plane backwards when it was on fire and the airflow is fanning the flames. I mean, stop the airflow as fast as possible, right?
13:13 Warthunder in a nutshell.
is this cliffs of dover? Didnt think it had vr support?
This appears to look and feel better than War Thunder.
This is IL-2 Strurmovik: Great Battles? Steam?
That’s correct brother
If I remember correctly from IL 2 1946 oil radiators on bf 109 are major weak spot.
The water radiators, too, since they're rather big and quite easy to hit on the wing roots.
And just like that, you're a ghost.
Since you're doing some IL2 videos can we see some yak3 or LA5 action?
You are using an Oculus to or Oculus rift on this? How does it connect with your gaming computer?
It would be awsome if you did an early jets dogfight. With like the meteor, vampire mk5, me262 or like the f-80.
Would you ever consider a Campaign/Career mode? Or would it be too time consuming/Not the direction you want your channel to go?
I'm actually in the process of figuring out HOW I want to feature it. Once I figure out the Logistics I will deff do it.
@@GrowlingSidewinder that’s awesome definitely looking forward to it
How do you turn your head so far to check your six? That's the one area that VR is giving me real trouble in. In the old days checking my six was easy when all it took was a button press but in VR I find I can't turn my head far enough. I can basically look out my right wing but any farther and I'll hurt my neck.
I sit on a swivel chair lol
@@GrowlingSidewinder Well, so do I but I also fly with a stick and throttle and rudder pedals and can't just swing my chair around without letting go of the controls first. I guess I'll have to figure something else out.
How do you check your 6 so effortlessly in VR without spraining your neck?
swivel chair lol.
Which version of IL2 is this?
This looks like a great game. Really enjoyed the vid and if i decide to get the game ,I'd rather be flying on your wing than in your sights!
Is this game on PS?
IL-2 is only on PC, so sorry you'll be fresh out of luck on console.
@@timmy3822
Ah what a shame. Oh well.
Thanks very much for the heads up.
@@spiritof6986 No worries, generally speaking flight sims are exclusive to PC if they're anything more than a casual experience say Ace Combat etc. The newest MS Flight Simulator is on Xbox Series X (which is great btw) but the PC has a massive array of peripherals for the sim enthusiast. Just be careful if you decide to jump into that particular rabbit hole, it gets pretty expensive!
@@timmy3822
Ace combat. I'm a WarWings refugee with little to no chance of finding asylum in the prop based WW1-2 genre of MP games and despite quite a few old friends from WarWings going over to AC,the jet based games just aren't my cup of tea. I've researched a wee bit more into IL-2 and quite a few other players (long time)are in concurrence with you. Absolutely fantastic game, but one of those that become more of a hobby.
Spoiler;
If you're particularly sensitive, don't read this bit...
I might try War thunder..
🤭.
Thanks again for taking the time.
Warm regards from Glasgow.
With Vr, can you operate the trimm and other controls with your hands, or do you still need a key board?
You've got to keybind everything to something (mouse, keyboard, joystick, throttle).
Rest in peace😢😢😢
You should try IL-2 Sturmovik: Desert Wings - Tobruk. That would be a great scene, with Tomahawks, Kittyhawks, Hurrican Mk.II and Spitfire Mk.V, Bf-109E and F tropical versions, also Italian fighters like Macchies and Fiats.
Did the vr update for Desert Wings already release?
@@WatchMysh I really have no idea. My computer doesn't build for gaming (business class Lenovo ThinkCentre AIO with integrated graphics) - that's why I rather watching others on UA-cam :) - and the last was the IL-2 1946 what I played with. Sorry...
But I checked back and GS made a video about DWT and he liked it very much, so maybe we will see some content in the future. I would love to see USN Wildcats vs Vichy French D.520 what really happend during Operation Torch.
@@Cuccos19 Yeah I'd really enjoy such content, too. Just checked - they did a new preview video for VR support just a month ago. Seems like a possible release isn't that far away. I only have the base game but I guess I'll get Desert Wings soon-ish once VR is available. Especially the Italian fighters are very attractive. :)
@@WatchMysh Macchi M.C.202 (or C.202) was one of the most beautifully designed fighters of WWII (especially the aft fuselage and tail surfaces). Did you no that it had asymmetrical wing design, the left wing was 21cm longer to deal with the propeller torque.
@@Cuccos19 really?? No, I didn't. That's very interesting. And yes, it's so beautiful. I'd really like to build in 1/48 but can't find a properly molded kit. It's just not that popular sadly.
How much ammo do you have?
You going to do more IL2?
Yes
So is this the stir movie flight sim?
How is there always so many planes there? What server was that? I don’t think it was quickmatch.
Where is DCS with getting to this quality on the WWII models?
DCS has actually a higher quality but lacks of assets and content
@@Mike_Romeo and that’s my point. The environmental quality is great, but it looked like the IL-2 modeling of the aircraft and the damage visuals looked much better than the DCS offering.
I like DSC better overall. Il2 is easier to get in and fly around , shoot guns ect. I dont like how small the battle sizes are in campaigns .
