FYI you really don't want to let the advance lever snap back on these. Same thing with the Pentacon, the winder is the weak point and since they're so old letting it snap back will damage the gears.
You're totally right, it's sort of an eastern block disease, however, in my experience, the Pentacon six has a flimsier knob, and it's more fragile overall, while the Kiev's knob is a little stiffer, feels more robust, but tends to blocknear the end of its travel, winding film but not arming the shutter correctly, unless you crank it firmly. I've had unpleasant surprises before i realized this, both by having too large and inconsistent gaps between shots, as well as superimposed edges. Other than that this is a stamped sheet monster that will outlive most. The cloth curtain sure helps, considering the Kiev 80's tin shutter is a disaster (Hasselbladski). On the optical side i strongly recommend the Zeiss Jena 80mm f2,8, MC Biometar, the wide Zeiss Jena MC 50.. f4 Flectogon, AND the fisheye 30mm f3,5 Arsat. They are all splendid, unlike the Volnas, the Myrs and most of the soviet line of lenses.
Honestly and from all my experience with the Kiev this might be a nice general precaution but isn't an issue with the Kiev 60. The Pentacon, yes, you can ruin it with it, the Kiev 88 has a whole lot of other issues, but the Kiev 60 is built like a tank and can take a beating or two, and I've never heard of the winder being a weak point of it before. I always used mine just like any other 35mm SLR.
@@O4KAST You can completely break the Kiev 88 just by changing the shutter speed with an uncocked shutter, and that's just one of a few problems with it I don't remember anymore. A lot of it's terrible reputation unfortunately carried over to the (much easier) Kiev 60.

Hello Linus! I watch a lot of photographers’ videos and I find your photography very inspiring. They way you compose portraits is especially unreal. Wondering if you could post a video about how you find inspiration and compose for portraits. Just wow.

I am doing concert photography and I was looking into finding a film camera that could keep up with my needs of shooting that I could add up to my set up, 35mm was an easy choice but I wanted to have the option to create square format shots as well as doing tons of cropping in general and a lot of post editing in dark room. This was for the most part the best option alongside with the Mamiya 330 mostly because those are the only cameras that have fast lenses and are wide enough for square formats (well, they are square formats...), but to be fair I'd like to find something similar to 6x9. The video was extremely helpful for me to understand how the camera would operate close to my needs since the conditions were pretty simillar and your video was pretty enjoyable to go through, thanks a lot dude.
whoaa it's Linus and his camera! I just listened this morning to the ep of Analog Talk where you were a guest haha. this video was greeeat too! I have a Kiev 6C and I love it with the WLF. for kind of the same reasons as you say 6x6 is good in the way that you can just hold the camera in what way is more comfortable to you and it doesn't change how it's portrait or landscape -I like that I don't need to think about that stuff. I have a Mamiya M645 1000s that is so heavy with the prism (and 80mm 1.9 ofc haha) and shooting portraits with that combo ain't exactly a good time ;D
Sorry, I let my camera geek out there a bit. So much that I forgot to say how amazing the photos were! Specially the first roll, you guys were really working it :) I see you didn't have too much trouble with overlaps. maybe lomo films suit this camera fine? I think todays films n backing papers are often thinner than films of old because I've had better luck with old film like EFKE and Forte stuff. But still, you can just crop overlaps or get nice diptych/triptych panoramas with it. :) like this one: www.flickr.com/photos/jonasfx/45466989481/ Now to smash that like button and ring that bell!! :D
My Kiev 6C has been disassembled for about 6 months now. Just when I had all the tools and parts needed to fix the shutter curtain, we had to hunker down because of Covid19, so even if I fix the curtain, I still can't assemble the camera, as most of the parts are in another physical location, where I can't yet go. Anyway, the Kievs have few flaws. The mirror slap is awful, so you have to find a good quality foam to replace the old one, it's crumbling anyway. The inside of the camera reflects light, so you need a flocking kit, those thankfully can be found in the EU for as low as $10. Also, as with all Kievs (both 135 RFs and MFs), you always cock the shutter and then change speed. Some have issues with fitting the excellent P6 lenses from Carl Zeiss Jena (this is yet another easy and cheap fix). Frame spacing is also an issue from time to time. The Kiev 6C/60 is a nice camera, with the option of getting extremely high quality glass either from former USSR, CZJ, or if you have the money the Schneider-Kreuznach from the Exakta 66. The CZJ Flek 50 is great (also works great if you like sprocket photos on 135 film, it's very close to being an ideal "normal" lens on 135 film, and combined with the wide ratio, looks extremely cinematic). The CZJ Biometar 80 is also a very, very good lens, as is the Volna used here, the other lens the Kievs come with, the Vega 12 is good too. The best of the best, the CZJ Sonnar 180, the perfect portrait lens for Kiev/P6, costs fair amount of money, and the insane Xenotar 80mm, which is probably one of the best lenses ever made will cost a fortune. If you can find it, will probably cost as much as an used car, but, hey, the Kiev is 100 bucks, so you can put a luxury vacation worth of a lens on it and make the best 6x6 photos ever, provided you have the talent for it, which I don't, but I once had a chance to shoot with that lens, and my lack of talent was quickly masked by it 🤣️. Also, awesome photos!
About camera reflecting light inside, is that what we can see on the edges of the photos linus shared here? Also what is a flocking kit? What do you do with it exactly?
I have a Kiev 6c with a 90mm 2.8 Vega lens. I use mine a lot with the waist level finder. The waist level finder has a mirror in it to enable focusing at eye level before you use the straight through finder. The more expensive Rolleiflex cameras had this type of hood. Cool to use. Great for portraits. I have the Ttl prism as well but the Wlf makes the camera lighter and more compact when folded. Praktisix and Pentacon 6 East German cameras are similar to the Kiev 6, Keiv 6c and the Kiev 60 the lenses from them are all the same fitting. My other 6x6 is a Yashica Mat with a 75mm 3.5 Lumaxar lens from 1957. I love them both. It's rare to find a video on the Kiev 6c. It's pronounced Keyef by the way
The thing I love about my Kiev is that waist level finder is actually bright as hell. The construction of the finder feels a bit flimsy but I will take that any day if I can actually see shit through it under the bright sunlight. I got my Kiev CLA'd and it actually is a joy to use, a lot of people saying it's rough and unpleasant are probably using it straight after it was in storage for 30 years, with gunked up gears.
Have you tried the original, because the Kiev 88 and the Kiev 60 are not other than simpler copies of an even more compact and better processed DDR medium format SLR camera, the Pentacon Six TL. You can get a Pentacon Six TL in Germany for a good 300-400 Euros in good condition with a Carl Zeiss Biometar 2.8/80 lens and 1-2 interchangeable viewfinders. For example, I was able to buy the light shaft viewfinder and the TTL prism viewfinder with camera and lens for just over 300 €.One thing to keep in mind with the Pentacon, as with the Kiev, is that you should not let the film transport lever snap back. Otherwise, the Pentacon is but a lot less susceptible to nasty surprises, shoots exclusively 6x6 and with appropriate masks also smaller, it but as said more compact, smaller and higher quality workmanship. The Pentacon should also be able to offer one or two more different viewfinder types, and the quality is really impressive for the price. Apart from that, I also find the Pentacon (purely personal opinion) a lot more stylish. Best wishes from Germany Lutz
To take away your fear of TLRs and Hasselblads...many are also available with waist level viewfinder. If you decide to go for something more sophisticated later.
also owning a kiev camera, but kiev88, hasselblad 500 copy. damn, those light leaks...i hate it SO MUCH...and looks like kiev60 also has it. your are not that bad, lucky you)
I think the film boders are a bit distraction in this case, there is so much going on with the light leaks on them and all that, so idk how I personally feel about that :) Also if you like the Kiev 60 you should have a look at the Pentacon 6 which was basically the original design from East Germany that the Kiev 60 is based on :)
LINUS!!! I actually had the same exact camera and it took really great night shots for me!! The only things that turned me off with this beast is that the shutter speeds 1/500 and 1/1000 did not work on my copy... I was pretty bummed out as I figured it out only after I burned 2 rolls... Otherwise it is a superb budget medium format camera with a super sharp lens!! The spacing issues is easy to figure out after a couple of rolls. The mirror slapping sound though... its like a canon firing 🤣
@@linusandhiscamera yep! Looking forward to more of your shots using this camera. And hey, get yourself a Carl Zeiss Jena lens for your Kiev 60 if you can find one ;)

Dude, I love your energy, and every time you yell "Yes!" after every shot hahaha. I'm pretty sure you are aware of this fact, but you can use prism finder + a handle to shoot the Hasselblad like an SLR! It might be worth a try but definitely not as budget-friendly as the Kiev 60.

It s a Very Good Camera from USSR, congratulations from Russia! One month ago I bought Kiev 6C TTL.)))
I like your lighting setup. Would be interesting to see more on portable lighting.
Just bought it super psyched and waiting for it to come in
Linus, keep doing original content. Love it homie

I gifted away a similar model, a Pentacon 6 to a friend. These photos are awesome. I like the moody theme.

thanks breh!
the bokeh on these are sick!! beautiful shots man.
YEAH! love them both (cam and the city ❤)
linus is so entertaining 😊
duuude thank you!!
Best wishes from Germany Lutz
yes man this photographs are dope!
Tried to grab one of these after I saw you tweet about it but could not find anywhere. Either way, you crushed it and these images are dope
they're alllll over eBay!
linusandhiscamera I literally just found one after I posted that comment for, like, 100! 😄 Your video is a good luck charm!
@@panelsandbars I TOLD YOU LOOOL
To take away your fear of TLRs and Hasselblads...many are also available with waist level viewfinder. If you decide to go for something more sophisticated later.
Facts!
I love how stoked you get on every shot. I thought I was the only one who did this hahaha

Cool camera, I've never tried it. I really like the photo at 8:30, well done in general!
Amazing concept and well executed 👌
thank you!!
do you have the link for the lightmeter app cant find it. the outcome are so dope 🔥🔥
apps.apple.com/us/app/mylightmeter-pro/id583922375
also owning a kiev camera, but kiev88, hasselblad 500 copy. damn, those light leaks...i hate it SO MUCH...and looks like kiev60 also has it. your are not that bad, lucky you)
Curious, what year was your copy made? The year is the first 2 digits of the serial number on the back.
I think the film boders are a bit distraction in this case, there is so much going on with the light leaks on them and all that, so idk how I personally feel about that :)
Also if you like the Kiev 60 you should have a look at the Pentacon 6 which was basically the original design from East Germany that the Kiev 60 is based on :)
I agree, I think they're perfect left out of all of the images!
10/10 inspirational 80s beats.
alllll day boi
these were SO clean. damn!
The mirror slapping sound though... its like a canon firing 🤣
aw man! that's super annoying. you're bound to find issues like this on random cameras
@@linusandhiscamera yep! Looking forward to more of your shots using this camera. And hey, get yourself a Carl Zeiss Jena lens for your Kiev 60 if you can find one ;)

.... but a Hasselblad is an SLR 😜
Well dang that was baddass.
Thanks! Haha
Werethese all shot at 2.8?learning to shoot at night and just bought this camera ..perfect video with great shots
yes! they were
4 years later, do you still shoot this? ❤
I really enjoyed this video. I am looking at buying a Kiev 60 but as you say most of them are in Russia and I am here in the United States. If you ordered yours from Russia and had it shipped to the United States can you tell me how much the customs and tax fees were? Thanks so much.
yeah, you’ll probably have a $60 shipping fee
This is dope. Nice work 📸
thanks fam 🙏🏼
Linus! Great video man. Just Subscribed and I actually just got this camera because of you! I shot it yesterday and then I woke up today realizing I couldn’t find the ASA function on the camera. Is there a way to do this?
What a great video!
thanks bro!
Question what phone app do you use for a light meter please could you tell me thank you 🙏.
Dude, I love your energy, and every time you yell "Yes!" after every shot hahaha.
I'm pretty sure you are aware of this fact, but you can use prism finder + a handle to shoot the Hasselblad like an SLR!
It might be worth a try but definitely not as budget-friendly as the Kiev 60.
i haaaaave a hassey and i still don’t like it 🥺❤️
@@linusandhiscamera Have you tried a prism finder? I have the 45 degree for mine and it makes portrait shoots like this a whole lot easier and more comfortable. You can get them easily for under $100. Andy
The creativity!
I had two Pentacon'Six TL's, they were always getting serviced... In the end I ditched them for a much more reliable Pentax 6x7.
The Arsat, Vega lenses were great and cheap though. I still miss them.
What is that small light you're using in the first shots ? Looks awesome
thank you! and it’s an RGB savage mini
Pentacon Six CLA must be done very well. Then it is absolutely reliable.
This is so awesome and moody
thanks will 🥰
Prices about to skyrocket because of this video
WHOOPS LOL
This shoot has a kinda Zelda vibe!!
Hello , what light meter you use?
Thank's
mylightmeterpro !
linusandhiscamera fab! Thank you!
Lovely vid. I think it's Kie-yev, though 😊
i watched a video on the US pronunciation and my friend who lives in Kiev told me to say it like this...did i get PUNKED?
@@linusandhiscamera I lived with a Ukrainian who called it different to that. Maybe we've all been punked!
Helkias Mapimhidze i also heard the correct way to pronounce it isn’t something that people who speak english can easily achieve 😂
@@linusandhiscamera Sounds about right!
What kind of lights were you using? And fog machine
When you push your film to 1600 do you develop it at the same time of the box speed or do you compensate your times somehow?
nah you gotta develop separately
linusandhiscamera how do you do so? Do you have a videi you can recommend to me? :)
There’s any way to change the lens for it to be wide angle?
*DUDE! What happened to LOMO 800 35mm film?!* It's out of stock for-EVER now! :\\
Amazing photos!
Hey man, new to the channel! I'm shopping for constant lights at the moment. Which ones are you using here?
Yo thanks for making this bro!
I love this camera
