I got it two years ago and as I work as a Dive Instructor, I have it every day multiple times in the sea, and it never let me down. A huge thumbs up for this watch, for me it is one of the iconic Citizen Dive Watches ever.
I got this watch when it first came out in the early-mid 1980s. Still have it. It is a fantastic watch with easy to change batteries and O-ring seal. The sensor is a bit big and ungainly but in Italy this watch was for many years not only a trendy and macho watch to wear on sea people (ideally on sporty or muscular wrists and forearms) but also a fashion accessory for girls to wear, loose like a bangle, and today - almost 40 years later - I still see them worn in southern Italy by both men and women. I have also most if not all of the later models. I was a diving instructor in Italy and very avid snorkeller so have most of not all of the later models of this Aqualand watch too - most of which had significantly smaller sensors, but these all have one big problem which this first model here did not have - they beep if you come up too quickly. This is great when you scuba dive as a warning, but it is a complete pain if you are snorkelling, as it disturbs the fish! In the Mediterranean, every scuba diver worth his salt can also skin dive down to 20-30m (60-95ft), so all later models of this watch were not so well suited to skin diving! So... sometimes, as here, the first iteration of a watch turns out to be the best! What a find - keep it and treasure it!!
you can say that again! my dad recently gave me this watch for my 21st birthday, we both love watches. he used to wear this watch a lot when I was a kid, he too was an avid snorkeller and diver. I'd say this watch is probably the watch i've seen the most worn by men in my area, excluding the good old digital casios and submariners (and submariner clones...). by the way, were you stationed in sardinia?
Old, first models have better price on market than new one! I have two aqualand c500 and sold one for 250 Euro!!! I keep sexond with full set as my favorite. Leta talk about this model- is it good investment to buy this new model?
Bought mine in November of 1989. Monterey Bay, Carmel, Mendocino, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, Cayman Brac, Jamaica, Cozumel, Yelapa, Cabo San Lucas, Maui, Lanai, Kauai to name a few. Used the depth and minute timer on every dive as a back up to my dive computer, accuracy was spot on. Still wear mine to this day
This was and is an excellent dive watch. I bought one about 30 years ago I still have it still works. I worked as a diving instructor. Dive time and depth sensors alarms and records brilliant. I think this predated the Dive computer's and reduced the amount of gears strapped to my left arm.
I bought this watch 35 years ago and apart for some minor changes it's basically the same. It's a classic, a piece of horological history and one of the best professional dive watches ever produced. It's practically indestructible and needs no servicing, just gasket and batteries replacement every five years.
One ☝️ of THE BEST WATCHES I EVER OWNED! Had my for about 20 add years , had it when I was in the Irish navy, travel all over the world with it dived in the India ocean, Irish cost absolutely outstanding watch ... ! Don’t mind the straps, savage bit of kit !
The straps are just like the original. I got mine today. Couldn't believe how stiff the strap was compared to what I use nowadays. I put it on a nato this time. Looks great on the nato.
I drooled over this watch for many years...I would stand outside my local jewelers on many a Saturday morning, just looking at, and being totally in awe of it... Mine as the screw case back (flat back six screws) I have owned this watch for over 25 years now, and I have just given it a new lease of life by way of a "new original rubber strap" and new battery .... The watch has never seen a drop of rain ,never mind the seas..... Will be on ebay soon.....
The one you have rob is the re issue which was done for the Danish special frogman seal forces. The prince of Denmarks favorites watch and is called the pingo because the prince usually had to wear his royal outfits and he looked like a penguin so his special forces team used to nickname him pingo which is penguin in Denmark. This watch is north pole ice diving approved.
fascinating titbit. Thanks for sharing. As someone living in Denmark for 10 years and someone who will hopefully become Danish, I consider this watch a must-buy. Will be ordering this watch right away!!!
Bought mine about 3 years ago from a pawn shop for 27.00. Needed new batteries and the one I found also has the little screws holding the case back on. Very funky watch. Thanks again for your reviews.
dude that watch you are holding is the first divers watch that was made in 1985 first electronic depth sensor...the one that you have is the re-issue aqualand classic 2
I got mine at the PX directly after they came on scene. It was the only piece of kit that stayed with me through several yrs of special forces duty in the mid east and else-ware. Now, after all these yrs it started slowing down and stopping. I sent it out to a shop in Ohio, they came back w/ a quote of 650! WTF? Huge sentimental value, but I can't find anyone reputable to tune it up for me.
On a whim I bought the Promaster Automatic Anniversary Edition. It's quietly wormed it's way into daily watch slot, although I can't really put my finger on why. I love it. Thankfully the strap has softened a bit.
I had the original version of this watch from Service Merchandise in 1990 or so. Wore it as my only watch for about 25 years before at some point it began fogging on the inside then stopped working. Wore it running, gym, swimming. Tossed it in the trash. Never knew at that time I could have sold it for parts on ebay for still abotu $125. :(.
It looks so weird I actually like it. Speaking of Citizen, today at my watch dealer I tried on the BN2031-85E Promaster Diver and it looked good on my wrist. I don't need it, but I'm thinking about it. There lies the watch disease. If I see one for under $390 on eBay again, I may be very tempted.
Jeffrey take a look at the bn 2030! The kurushio team edition! I have the bn2037 black and gold limited 30th aniversary! Random rob this citizen jp 2000 is an iconic watch! The first one with digital depth gauge ...many compliments i recibed when i used this watch .... Most of them from other divers! The only negative thing is batery consumption if you use It in diving Mode....every year a new batery...you can find It for a 330/340€ brand new here un Europe....i didnt seen any diver diving with Rolex , Omega Panerai..they use this citizens... diferent Aqualand models as a back Up.
My crown threads are fine. Nice and smooth. But you can use a little floss if needed with crown popped out to get out any micro machining dust that may be in the threads. Maybe a q-tip wipe of oil on the threads too?
I just got the original, silver version from August 1986 in NOS condition and it is a beauty! Do you know what size is the mineral glass? Want to put a glass protector on it. Thanks!
Had the first version, but it got stolen. Bought a new one 5 min ago, due to watching this video. Denmark has two elite forces the hunter force (army) and frogmen (Navi), and the Frogmen got/get this watch when they have finalized their trainimg. The next Danish King, crown prins Frederik is actually a frogman, and have and wear this watch in puplic, so to a Dane, this watch has a huge story. Frederiks call name in the Navi was Pingo, Citizen Denmark has adopted that and call the watch Pingo version.
One of the funkiest watches I have ever seen. I am not saying it's bad. Just a weird design. I happen to like Japanese watches. I know there are swiss watch snobs out there that will only buy swiss, but the Japanese make some really nice stuff. Seiko, Orient, Citizen, Grand Seiko and I know there are more but can't think of any right now.
I owned the first gen of these!!!! Awesome watch!!!! The back cover was exactly the same shape as the body and the seals were very difficult to find that’s why it had to be serviced only by Citizen, had 3 batteries inside. Where did you find this one, 2nd gen!!!! Great review!!!!
You shouldn't have sold this rob. This thing is iconic and soon will be as difficult to find as the citizen aquamount none to be found under 1k. I own a jp2000 and I am making myself a c023 from the past with different parts. Cheers!
They still are plenty here in Sweden, i just bought my second one for $249 but that was with 10% off coupon for new customer in that store, cheapest ordinary price for this watch in Sweden are $277, still ok price .
Thank you! This answerd a lot of my questions, mostly about the size. The comparison with the SKX was great. With my smaller wrists, size is always a problem...
Great watch aka the Pingo used by Danish military divers I believe Ultracool but the 24 mm lugs are indeed difficult and for me one of the reasons to sell it
I agree with you, keep it fun and maybe buy something different. That Citizen you briefly showed with the red bezel looks very cool. Looking forward to that review.
an absolute classic here in europe. did you know it is more or less unchanged sold like this since 1985? you can still get it on amazon germany for about 350 euro. i wasnt aware its discontinued, but that is said about many watches that in fact are not. not sure about this one. btw i think it wears rather small, due to the smallish dial/bezel diameter it looks also small.
Also, I put a 30mm glass screen protector on mine. Like the ones they use for smartphones. Can't even notice it. Fits perfectly, very thin and protects me from scratches.
That's actually a clever idea, never thought to do that. Does this watch have a timer function? I know it has the stopwatch chronograph but will it countdown from a time and alarm?
i saw one here in Jeddah Saudi Arabia a couple of weeks ago and thought it was an NOS citizen but to my surprise it's a genuine seiko, i don't know if it was a new release, did not bother to check...hmmmmm..
Hi, I need help please! I bought the promaster from 1984 with three batteries. I just put new batteries in the watch but the watch still doesn’t work. Is there anything I need to do? It has 3 sr920w batteries. Thanks
I'd seriously consider getting a 'slightly pre-owned' Panerai accordion rubber band in 26mm/22buckle, and notching it ever so slightly with a razor blade to fit the 24mm lugs. I notched the 26 to fit my Citizen Courageous diver with 22 lugs. I have another genuine OP 26mm accordion band coming right now from UK for my older Seamaster with 20 lugs. I just notch them to fit, and they look great and feel like butter. Similar style and fit to what you have on there now, just waaaaaaaaay better and waaaaaaaay softer. Drawback is they're usually $125 - $150 on Ebay, and not many out there at a bargain price. DO NOT buy the cheap knock-offs! They are STIFF like what you want to swap out! I haven't found a better caoutchouc rubber strap that looks as good when notched. That's why I'm now waiting of delivery of number 2. We like wide and soft straps :-)
The Japanese gave us quartz and know how to do it! They also revamped from "traditional" appearance. Mind you they had the bullet train so not surprising they knock Swiss pieces into the past? Cheers.
It was an old design Aqualand. Try the new one even it has been more than 10 years now. 2+ years battery, full heavy stainless steel & good diver's ana-digi electronic watch. Citizen is stop making digital display diver's. It is a rare item right now.

I like my Aqualand ...i enjoyed more than my other expensive watches! I dive with It!
This watch was BIG in Brasil during the 80-90s. Might get one just for the heck of it. Cool stuff!

Mine as the screw case back (flat back six screws)
I have owned this watch for over 25 years now, and I have just given it a new lease of life by way of a "new original rubber strap" and new battery ....
The watch has never seen a drop of rain ,never mind the seas.....
Will be on ebay soon.....
This watch has earned its name from Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark who wore it during his service under Frømandskorpset (danish Special Ops)
Enzo wears this watch
I live in Denmark and see this watch quite often on the wrists of Danish men...will get one soon!
I had one of these back in the '90's....a great watch.
AKA the “PINGO”. Thanks for another great review. Can’t wait to see what strap replacement you will choose.
got mine 1990, still working 30 years after. I just had it for servicing and spent $80. I bought the current generation aqualand too....good watch..
The one you have rob is the re issue which was done for the Danish special frogman seal forces. with the depth gauge it is a real backup diving instrument . I love it !
I use It for scuba diving! A great true tool watch...better tool than my seamaster!
It was my dream watch as a kid, 25 years later I bought one. Little I knew, the diving I'm doing now is... in trouble lol
Great video. I love this one more than my Tuna... Im glad mine is the model that was prior to the case back being etched, which are the newer models.
I’ve owned my watch since 1996-1997 still working:)
On a whim I bought the Promaster Automatic Anniversary Edition. It's quietly wormed it's way into daily watch slot, although I can't really put my finger on why. I love it.
Thankfully the strap has softened a bit.
You didn't mention it can log 4 dives and give your depth on descent. It also has a "slow" down and beep if you ascend to quickly.
👍
Really nice watch back in the day, while I had it. It disappeared after my cousin came for a visit, ha ha
I got this (the vintage version two tone gold) after I saw it in the murder mystery of the Oslo
I had the original version of this watch from Service Merchandise in 1990 or so. Wore it as my only watch for about 25 years before at some point it began fogging on the inside then stopped working. My crown threads are fine. Nice and smooth. But you can use a little floss if needed with crown popped out to get out any micro machining dust that may be in the threads. Maybe a q-tip wipe of oil on the threads too?
Classic 80s, I still have one of the originals bad boys from that time.
I just got the original, silver version from August 1986 in NOS condition and it is a beauty! Do you know what size is the mineral glass? Want to put a glass protector on it. Thanks!

lol i bought one more today but it was second hand in good condition for $84, its the newer version because it have the laser etched back.
Like the red bezel promaster. Looking forward to that video
Thank you! This answerd a lot of my questions, mostly about the size. The comparison with the SKX was great. With my smaller wrists, size is always a problem...
Great watch aka the Pingo used by Danish military divers I believe
Ultracool but the 24 mm lugs are indeed difficult and for me one of the reasons to sell it
Nickname derived from the name given to the Danish crown prince Frederik when he was a "frog" in the 90'ies by his colleagues. He wore this watch.
Expensive when it came out I paid a ton for it ... pro masters are savage...
I agree with you, keep it fun and maybe buy something different. That Citizen you briefly showed with the red bezel looks very cool. Looking forward to that review.
Will do that one very soon. Sunday is sale day but I will post a watch vid too
Thank you for sharing you impresions, love this watch a lot. I remember when I restored two of them some years ago.

Its not discontinued! You can see it un their webside! I like It. ...one on my favourites in my col.lection
I just purchased one and thought the watch would have been a bit larger than. Watch band did not have the Dive limit info....kind of curious why?
Also, I put a 30mm glass screen protector on mine. Like the ones they use for smartphones. Can't even notice it. Fits perfectly, very thin and protects me from scratches.
That's actually a clever idea, never thought to do that. Does this watch have a timer function? I know it has the stopwatch chronograph but will it countdown from a time and alarm?
Do you think this watch is going to be scarce ? I don't see it in the current citizen line up, pheraphs it has been already decommissioned
These Citizen Aqualands are getting very hard to find especially the older versions!!
i saw one here in Jeddah Saudi Arabia a couple of weeks ago and thought it was an NOS citizen but to my surprise it's a genuine seiko, i don't know if it was a new release, did not bother to check...hmmmmm..
Hi, I need help please! I bought the promaster from 1984 with three batteries. I just put new batteries in the watch but the watch still doesn’t work. Is there anything I need to do? It has 3 sr920w batteries. Thanks
This could fit nicely into my Citizen collection. This model is definitley discontinued. I recently scored a BN0200-56E Titanium diver and I love it.
You have definitely no clue. This icon is still in production.
@@michaelmalmborg3479 I just recently discovered that it's still in production, I can't believe it's not discontinued and I want it
How many years will the CR2016 last this hour if I do not use its functions, depth gauge, stopwatch, alarm?
Way cool factor!! I bought one then flipped it a few weeks later. I felt like I was cheeting on Seiko🤔
I ended up selling too. I still have some other Citizen I like much more
Does it have a dual time feature?
This piece is awesome!! Great choice!
I'd seriously consider getting a 'slightly pre-owned' Panerai accordion rubber band in 26mm/22buckle, and notching it ever so slightly with a razor blade to fit the 24mm lugs. Those have terrible bands. I replaced mine 5 times in 2 years. I’m lucky mine didn’t end up at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
New subscriber here. You have some cool video's keep up good work
Seeing alot of reports of the strap being too stiff. Is it really that bad?
Yes lol.
Great advice. Be adventurous and enjoy.
That's a conversation starter. Very interesting thanks...
What's that tool you have in your hand?
I guess it wears like a Seiko Turtle then?
Can someone chime in?
Can someone please explain the valve at clock, its purpose?
Apparently a lot more people dive than I thought.
Where did you get this one?
I have the same watch. For some reason the buttons are not reacting to any push. Battery is new and the display is showing digits. What can I do?
Push all buttons at the same time ⌚..to reset..👍
Very neat! Thanks for sharing.
Try an orange 24mm Borealis rubber strap on it 🙂.
Interesting Citizen! I really like it. Price is okay from my perspective. I don't like the lug width.
Release date?
It was an old design Aqualand. Try the new one even it has been more than 10 years now. 2+ years battery, full heavy stainless steel & good diver's ana-digi electronic watch. Citizen is stop making digital display diver's. It is a rare item right now.
Great video thanks for the info
i have one of those and i am here to find out how to messer the atm
I have the Aqualand AY5000-56W and this looks like I'd be a bigger PITA to change the battery. My caseback seized and with the 5 grooves and odd shape that didn't want to stay in the movement holder it took a few minutes to crack it open. Like the new Fugu BTW
Where did you buy it?
Where you buy?
Great purchase! Never sell it.
I bought this watch in Hawaii in 1999 maybe 450 I paid great watch I ended up almost homeless had to sell it
Get a borealis strap and you're set.

I try to keep it fun but it's getting expensive. 🤣
That’s a cool one.🤓
I have one great watch
Citizen arnie
Lol, kinda. The Arnie is pretty great, looking forward to the vid next week
Funky cool
If your getting a little bored with the hobby go outside your comfort zone, but something you normally wouldn't you know?, but an Invicta or something you know?
I’m usually with you on your watch selection but definitely not this one
Bad strap, bad crown, bad bezel action, kinda pricey, weird appendage on the left side. No thanks but interesting to see.
Way too expensive, 500 for a watch? Ridiculous
