  • I was inspired to make this episode when I visited an old abbey on a tiny island in the north of France. Why would we care about old books? Because they are the fundamental building blocks of all the knowledge that we have today. Revisiting some of these old books, always gives me a new perspective or an new insight on topics that I'm interested in.

I visited Mont Saint Michel in 2002 to view the illuminated manuscripts held in the amazing library. I’ve had a life long fascination with the calligraphy and illumination of medieval books and currently working on a range of hand lettered and illustrated versions of my own writing for an MA project. Fascinating insight into Carmina Burana. Very inspiring. Thank you.

Fascinerend verhaal, Lieven! Waarvoor mijn gemeende dank - om onze gedeelde liefde voor old books en om al die mooie herinneringen terug op te roepen:
Oh Fortuna, velut Luna statu variabilis, semper crescis aut decrescis; vita destabilis... (enz.)

Oh my goodness, my head is spinning! Yes, back to the original manuscripts (if there is a unique original).

What a fantastic video! 👏 I love how you connected the story of the abbey and the making of medieval manuscripts with De Hamel's book. Also, embarrassing as it may be, I had no idea that the famous cantata was based on a group of medieval poems. So thank you very much for sharing this interesting info in such an appealing way 😊

Hello Maria Fernanda Pimenta, thank you for your kind words. You might also like part 2 of this episode (see link: ua-cam.com/video/IjPqqycbPGA/v-deo.html ) or maybe also the one about a 1000 year old manuscript that is even studied today (by Nasa and others): link here: ua-cam.com/video/AU3GVWWdPDw/v-deo.html I wish you a nice day :-)

I know this is an older video of yours but I just wanted to tell you I enjoyed it. I have kept a list of the books I have read with my reactions and thoughts for several years. De Jamel’s book was my favorite book of 2018. I read much of it while floating around the Pacific Ocean on an aircraft carrier. Reading about ancient manuscripts in this setting seems both bizarre and fascinating. Thanks to your video I think I will have to go back and reread the chapter on the Carmina Burana. Many thanks. Barth

Hello Barth, thank you for your kind words. I'm happy that you enjoyed the video and shared your thoughts. At the moment I'm working on an episode about mysterious books. And one of them is a manuscript that contains not only a lot of text, but also many drawings. It is written in a code or in a cipher language, and through the centuries people have not been able to discover the meaning of the text. Maybe this episode might be of interest to you? FYI, the very next episode at the end of this month, will be about books on silence. Do you have much moments of calm and silence on an aircraft carrier? I wish you a very nice day 🌟📚📖🌟

@@BoldBooksandBones I suspect you are talking about the Voynich Manuscript (I, probably like many of your followers, enjoy "Books About Books" and the VM briefly was discussed in one I happen to have). Cryptic or mysterious books sounds like a great topic. Books about silence sounds intriguing as well and no, not too much silence or calm on an aircraft carrier. However, I lived on the ship and when we were in home port on a weekend it could feel awfully empty. Now I am retired and living in the Northern Cascade mountains of Washington State in the US. Lots of calm and silence here......and more time for reading. Thanks again for the videos. They are not only interesting topic wise but professionally filmed and recorded. R/Barth

Thank you again for your kind words and update! Happy to hear that you have lots of calm and silence after a busy professional life. Indeed I'm talking about the Voynich :-)... lot's of work on that episode. First the one about silence will be uploaded soon. Curious what you will think about it. Have a great day. Lieven

Your channel deserves far more subscribers! Your videos are much more professional and interesting than most of the stuff I come across on UA-cam these days. But I am wondering why your channel has "Bones" in the title? And what was the "one disaster" your video title is referring to? Thanks!

    • @BoldBooksandBones

Hi Tim, Thank you for your kind words! They encourage me to do more 😁👍. The “Bones” in Bold Books and Bones is meant as a tribute to all the old writers that have passed away. Most of my favourite writers have lived centuries ago. I have a short intro movie on my channel where I briefly explain why I started the channel if you would be interested. And yes “the disaster ” is yet to come in part 2 or part 3 of this series on Old Books... so more to come 😁🤘📚📚📚working hard 😁... I’m happy you enjoyed the Channel. Enjoy your day!
