    Nice vid, as always. Bought the 23mm 1.4 especially to cover low light situation: parties, indoor shots, family life etc. Super happy with it. It focusses instantly and silently on my XH1; way, way better than most of the other older Fuji lenses. Sharpness is fantastic; it is even a wee bit sharper than my beloved 16-55 f2.8 and also offers slightly better contrast (if you pixel-peep, that is). Sold off the 23mm 2.0; easy decision.

    Super useful video, thanks! I owned both lenses and reached similar conclusions after real world use over most of this year. The biggest difference that mattered to me as a photographer was the wider aperture, and particularly the sharpness at the wider apertures, especially close up. So I sold the F2 and kept the F1.4 - probably going to cost me more in the long run given the initial outlay and resale value of the older lens, but it just suits my needs better. Can completely see the F2 is better for the use case you describe. Enjoy your break!

      The best way to justify value / spending money on something, is to use it a lot.
      If you love the lens and use it all the time, who cares about initial outlays.
      And thanks, Merry Christmas to you

    This was a really interesting comparison. I enjoyed watching it. There’s one aspect of the 23 mm F2 that you didn’t touch on, and it’s the one aspect of the lens that keeps me from purchasing it. I’m talking about a noticeable softness you get shooting at close focusing distances. I’ve seen this issue mentioned repeatedly in reviews of this lens and in sample images. I’m wondering if this is something that you didn’t observe or if this is something you didn’t test. Happy holidays!

      I actually did some tests on this yesterday after someone mentioned it.
      And using my sharpness guide from this video I feel the lens is fantastic.
      E.g. at f/2 it is soft at minimum distance.
      But at around f4 I think it's fantastic at minimum.

      And thats why I sold the the f2 in favor of the f1.4, I like to shoot up close wide open and the f2 just didn't cut it, if thats not an issue then I'd get the f2.

    While I have the 18 and 33 1.4s, I prefer the 23 f2 for its low profile on my X-Pro 3 or X-E2s as no one really notices, especially in environments where photography is treated with a great deal of suspicion.

    There is a clear difference with 23mm f2 at short range and long range. 23mm f2 is dull as a pillow close up and needs to be stopped down to at least F4 when shooting close portraits. I thought I had a bad lens, but I soon saw more had same problems. So I can't put 23mm f2 side by side with 1.4 version. The 1.4 version is never dull at any distances. I didn't notice you mentioned this, but it's 02:11 here now so I could have skipped that :)

  • @jacobh5817
    @jacobh5817 3 роки тому +2

    Very good comparison. For stills I prefer the F1.4 over the F2. I find it to have a much better contrast and close-focus performance. Anything within 1.5m and wider than F5.6, the F2 lens shows quite soft corners and lack of contrast. As if there’s a veil over it. Beyond that distance it clears up. It’s very similar to the 23mm F2 in the X100, though not as bad. With the X100V Fuji addressed the issue, so hopefully someday they’ll launch a 23/2 MkII to fix this as well. Then it would be an awesome lens for that price.

    You had me scrambling for the calculator to double check the numbers my head when you said the f/1.4 was only 40% heavier than the f/2. I thought wow, surely it’s a lot more than 40% heavier. I checked and yes the f/1.4 is 300g and that extra 120g is 67% heavier than the 180g f/2.
    And amazingly the current AU$799 discounted price is 67% more than AU$479 for the f/2. That really is dollars per gram pricing!

    I spent a good week deciding if I want to get the 1.4 or the f2 version. I went with the f/2 because well I can use it for video and its rather small/light and has weather sealing. I primarily shoot with the 16-55, not a particularly small or light lens paired with the XT4 so the 23 f2 will be my everyday/walk around kinda lens when I want to be light. Although, the 1.4 would be a better option to have complement the 16-55 bt he 23 f2 is way cheaper than the X100V I was looking at 😂 - Great video man!!!! Hope you have a great holiday.

    I owned both of these lenses and I sold f2. Because pictures from f1.4 have more character, just like the XF56. Secoundly f2 too soft and only from f4 close up photos get sens. It is simmiliar in softness to X100F. Thats true, that f1.4 is slow and unsealed, but if someone takes only pictures, should stay away from the f2 version.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you!
      I did 2.7 meters just because I needed to have a distance, and I stated it because distance must have some effect on testing (not sure if you're wondering about for the AF test or the sharpness test)
      For the sharpness testing this is why I measured the resolution as a percentage so it was more comparable.
      And for AF testing I also tested from minimum and maximum focus distance to target and averaged it.
      So at 2.7m the minimum to target times where much faster than the infinity to target times.
      But it averages out so hopefully I can use these speed test to compare against other lenses unless someone points out a flaw in my testing.

    Unless I missed it in your list, I did not see any of the macro lenses tested.
    One thing I like doing with my Mu-43 gear is taking close up photos of very small frogs in reeds. I have to hold my camera in my right hand and use my left hand part the reeds t get a semi clear shot. After all I don't want to harm their environment.
    I had a brief hold of an X-S10 in a shop recently and thought it may be light enough to hold with one hand. But they did not have a display macro lens so I could see how the stabilization would work one handed.
    If you are interested and can borrow both macro lenses it would be good to see a review of them on a light body to how they perform one and two handed with a small flash attached.
    Although I liked the X-T4 better I think it may be to heavy for one handed use. My only negative for the X-S10 from what I can see is no remote shutter socked. Other than that for the price it is looking good for an entry into the Fuji system to see if I like it.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      Long term goal will get all lenses tested and compared but the list is long.

    Great review. I noticed that many old Fuji X lenses are very popular, but are too loud for video. Looks like Fuji just recently started making more video-centric lenses as to the AF and focusing noise.
    It'd be interesting to watch a review and separation of lenses that are 1) new and good for video as to AF and noise and 2) too old and not good for video even having very good specs. I recently started thinking about buying Fuji for vlogging and reviews seldom test lenses for a particular purpose of the video shooting. Reviewers are mostly photographers focusing more on photographic results.
    I thought to invest in one all-around good lense for vlogging and it's really a problem to figure out what lenses I should just not consider due to their poor performance as to vlogging. Usually, I first like a lense, and watch many reviews. Then almost after making a decision to buy it some review just demonstrates how loud it is when AF is engaged. Bummer. Then everything starts from scratch and again many reviews, another lens, and again some just mention that it's actually has a terrible AF breathing for video. Now I'm split between 15-45 cheap one and the new 10-24 WR. Vastly different budgets, but maybe the latter won't be that loud.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      I've been thinking about that review but I would need all the lenses at once to record accurate audio levels and just to all around do the video as well as I'd like.
      Next time Fuji fly me to head office I might ask to go a day early so I can create that video.
      As for vlogging lenses I've used the 10-24mm a lot and all my older vlogs about rwanda are filmed using that lens.
      But my preference is now the 23mm f/2 as it also lets me get soft backgrounds when needed and is just wide enough for me to still be in frame and be picked up by a on camera microphone when out at about.
      I've stopped doing handheld filming though which the 10-24 was great for but was never steady enough for my tastes even with Ibis.

      @@ThomasBusbyPhotography I have a question as to filming a talking video like this one of yours. I have X-S10 with kit lens 16-80 F4 and bought 2 popular square led light panels. How important is it to have a smaller aperture for such a video? I'm thinking about buying Viltrox 23 F1.4 and wonder whether I would need F1.4 for such a video at all. Maybe having F1.4 could result in a too narrow depth of field and would result in a worse watching experience since focus would be changing with a person moving a little in front of a camera. Also, I shoot street. Borrowed the 23 f1.4 a few times and from my small sample experience with the lens, the slower AF speed did cause me to lose some fast moving subjects sometimes, as opposed to my 35 f2 and 16-80 f4, which I don't usually miss shots with. Kind of made me lose interest in getting the lens, even though the quality of the images are superb. But this maybe due to my lack of experience with the lens and focal length. The aperture ring on that particular 23 1.4 is also kinda loose, which was annoying...

    Thanks for sharing! I don’t do much video, but Having both these lenses I found the f1.4 much sharper for subjects up close. But To be honest i am not a fan of both. The f1.4 doesn’t always nail the AF perfectly and thats with using the XT4, I wish Fuji would redesign a high end 23mm with F1.1 or F1.2 that has the latest AF Speed motors, Weather resistance and all,
    This is the only reason I am still shooting full frame for my pro work, I cant seem to get close to what my full frame 35mm f1.4 lens gives me! I get better Sharpness, subject separation, bokeh and more accurate af with the canon full frame equivalent. Fuji knocked it out of the park with the 16mmF1.4, 56mm f1.2 & 90mm f2 i just love those lenses and use them constantly for my weddings. But unfortunately i cant say the same about there 23mm options.

    Hello, like the video.
    I have a question, I am really confused to which one I have to buy. I own already the 35 f2 and I like it, but sometime in a lowlight situation I feel it not the right lens. So my question is, as I like take pictures in low light and if rain is better I should chose the f2 or because the low light the 1.4? is very very hard for me choose between these two lenses, so which is your advice? thank you very much, and have a good day.

      If you're not in a rush I'd wait for a mark II or consider the 16mm f/.14 as that is the best of both worlds.
      BUT if it has to be 23mm and soon I would pick the f/2 considering everything you just said, hope this helps.

      It's very inconsistent depending on the lens.

    This really feels a bit biased, 1.4 was SHARPER on both test, do a lay iver graph, MUCH MUCH better on abberations, on par with a fr*king 16mm 2nd spot, real world EQUAL focus speeds on F2, locking manual focus ring with markings and still only 300grams, really don't get your conclusion. Even the noisy motor I hardly heard and is a mute point with a decent mic, and let's not forget 2 whole stops faster and tack sharp at 1.4. Really sounds like a home run......
