Dad's Army records were burned in the fire at the St. Louis records depository way back. My sister can't get a US passport because she can't get a birth certificate.
Bruce Miller he was in the military for so many years why he didn't ask and tell his situation to his CO for getting a military passport, then it will be backed up for his US passport too.
Once again, the U.S.A. is breaking international law and standards when it comes to it's own citizens and residents. Every country is obligated to issue a travel document to citizen and non-citizen resident alike, if there are no other risks associated in doing so. In the case of non-citizens (which seemingly they're trying hard to turn this defenseless old man into) typically this means issuing internationally recognized documents fulfilling the role of a passport using one of three options: 1. Travel Document for Resident Foreigners; 2. Travel Document for Refugees, aka the 1951 Convention Travel Document; 3. Stateless Person's Travel Document. HOWEVER, I believe they would even refuse issuing one of those, which brings us to a very interesting, but little known piece of international law: The '1954 Convention Travel Document' is a travel document, unlike a Stateless travel document (stateless person by a signatory of the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons) ISSUED TO A PERSON IN CIRCUMSTANCES OF ANY DIFFICULTIES IN GAINING A TRAVEL DOCUMENT FROM COUNTRY OF BIRTH. The cover bears the words "Travel Document" in English and French (and often in the language of the issuing state) along with the date of the convention, but does not bear the two stripes appearing in the upper right corner of the front cover of refugee travel documents.
From one fifth generation war veteran to another, I found this to be a shameful disgrace to all who served. American War veteran USS Marvin Shields Desert Storm 1990-94.
I have the same problem. The State Department keeps giving me bullcrap excuses like "your photo is over 6 months old". It costs me $160 each time they do that. The government is required by law to provide a citizen a passport, and can only withhold that in certain circumstances of treason and such.
This is very similar to what happened to my father back in the 70's, it has nothing to do with being an immigrant or having an immigrant family. My dad had no birth certificate at all because all the records were destroyed in a fire in Tennessee. He had no medical records, it was a home birth, yada yada, anyway we had to pull up census records to prove he was American. Let me tell you that was a bear back then to get, there was no internet and you got major run around from all the vital statstics offices. It took about 7-8 years to get all of it together. If we hadn't been able to find census records, from when he was 10, he would have been out of luck. We even had his tax records from 30 years prior. Then they still didn't want to give in, we had to get the State Rep and a lawyer. Back then the State Reps actually Did their Job.
This happen very often to people how where born by midwife, Mexican parents pay thousand of dollars to midwife in the USA to register their kid as born in the USA, later this midwifes are caught and the government investigate all of the kid born to this midwifes.
Tara Westover is white and born into a Mormon Survivalist family. She didn't even know the day she was born. But she's white and from Idaho, never went to school until she was 17 years old when she started college at BYU. She got her PHD in History from Cambridge England. She never had any problem getting a passport. The USA is really clucked up now.
SHe is as white as the driven Mormon Snow. She and her family had no idea on the date she was born. Relatives had to come and swear what day she was born. She never had a birth certificate. Someone picked a date. Westover had a delayed birth certificate. It sounds more like what people in 1930's Germany had to go through to get their German card. Otherwise, they had no rights. Is this how you want to treat other Americans like this man? They use this tactic in states with Faux Voter laws like Florida where if you move there, you have to spend a lot of money getting records they want to prove who you are. Like this man. If he was a woman and was born in a field and has no both certificate, and mas married multiple times and changed her/his name when married, you have to provide proof of marriage and divorce for each and every one. Its just another way of saying it is a Jim Crow Poll Tax on poor people. You have no idea how limited US Citizens rights are becoming now. Just like Nazi Germany in the 1930's. If it happened then, it can happen again here.
I'm a vet and they are refusing to give my wife permanent or even temporary residency or give our son a visa to visit us.. My wife hasn't seen her son in over 10 years. They make up all kinds of illogical excuses yet they have no problem taking my money.
Apparently, his problem had something to do with the economy in your country. The U.S. doesn't want him to spend his dollar pension outside the country. There's a lot of pensioners opted to live in South East Asia after retirement because they could enjoy much spending their money here compared to the high standard of living in the US.
My grandmother had a delayed birth certificate and her passport was also refused until she submitted documentation. Thankfully her family was part of the wealthy white society of the time and she had access to all the documents they were demanding and then some. She was a card carrying member of the DAR and cousin of a former US president. Getting documentation was simple for her because she was indeed privileged. Disgusting that USCIS insists that the norms of the privileged apply to all of the USA. Does USCIS really believe that ALL American babies born at that time were having their births announced in the paper, or through fancy cards? Or having "well baby" checkups???? WTF? The fact that this gentleman is a veteran makes it more emotionally stirring but the truth is that ALL US citizens deserve to be able to get a passport....not just the ones who can prove that their parents complied with the societal norms of the privileged or urban citizens with access to all this documentation.
@ USA 🇺🇸 give him his constitutional rights to have a US Passport of a country he had defended with his life at risk. God Bless You Mr. Cano a proven brave American Patriot 🇺🇸
We elect officials to serve citizens. Many people never contact their elected representatives for help. I write to my senators (remember, every state has 2 senators) and my congressman. They (and their staff) can be very helpful. I think they really LIKE to help us when we're reasonable. There are a lot of battles we don't have to fight alone. We should all get to know our federal representatives, state officials, county and city officials. Don't be invisible.
nemo227 I've said this more than once. Your elected officials do not have the power to issue passports, nor can they make it happen. All they can do is interrupt the process. It is never a guarantee that the passport will be issued.
That's an important point to keep in mind. I've never tried to get a passport, don't want to leave the USA. I did cross the border into Tijuana in the forties, day trip with my parents. And I went to British Columbia for a week in the early seventies. Things were different then; times change, rules change. Now I desire to stay in the USA but I love to talk to foreign visitors. Anyhow, we tend to under-use our elected officials. We pay whether we use their help or don't. It's good to get to know them, find out if they're helpful or not, find out if they are worth the money we pay them as taxpayers.
Not personal, it's data management. When I filed for unemployment in 2008 in Arizona, for example, the State said my social security number was invalid. Therefore my unemployment claim was denied. But my ssn is associated with two honorable discharges, USN and USCG, and a Top Secret security clearance!! And my surname is not hispanic. I had to contact my representative at the time, a Kyrsten Sinema, to straighten the mess out. Glad I did.
This is strange. Even a foreigner serving in US military has the right to apply for US citizenship just after one year of service. This guy has that citizenship his entire live and it's stil a problem?! Weird!!!
DrMayeda1 My point was that they both were in a situation that was life threatening. That situation was not of their doing. Lee Alaniz Semper Fi USMC 1967-1970
If the State Department decides that you are a real threat to national security or U.S. policy, you may be denied a passport. You will also be disqualified if you have been ruled legally incompetent, are subject to felony arrest or have been forbidden -- by court order, parole or probation -- from leaving the country.
There weren't a lot of hospitals around the area when he was born. So being born at midwives houses was the norm. Hospitals are few and far I'm between. My parents couldn't read or write so when the Passport office asks for newspaper article announcing your birth and parents names as proof. Well my parents couldn't read or write so what was the point. It didn't matter my entire life till I tried to apply for a passport in 2003. I got denied, then tried again I'm 2016. Denied again...anyways the passport office asks for some hard to find documents from applicants forcing many to quit. The newspaper article is one, baptism records, etc. I finally found my baptism record so I'm gonna try one more time.
Just more bureaucratic incompetence. This Veteran deserves an apology from the U.S. Government!
And his passport.
The day this story broke the State Department decided to give it to him. It’s almost as if they didn’t care before the public found out

Dad's Army records were burned in the fire at the St. Louis records depository way back. My sister can't get a US passport because she can't get a birth certificate.
Absolutely disgusting how this poor man has been treated.
He is a Veteran this is Horrendous
Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be an American
Bruce Miller Fair, but... There are many worse things happening in other countries so there's that.
Bruce Miller he was in the military for so many years why he didn't ask and tell his situation to his CO for getting a military passport, then it will be backed up for his US passport too.
This is criminal!
HOWEVER, I believe they would even refuse issuing one of those, which brings us to a very interesting, but little known piece of international law:
The '1954 Convention Travel Document' is a travel document, unlike a Stateless travel document (stateless person by a signatory of the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons) ISSUED TO A PERSON IN CIRCUMSTANCES OF ANY DIFFICULTIES IN GAINING A TRAVEL DOCUMENT FROM COUNTRY OF BIRTH. The cover bears the words "Travel Document" in English and French (and often in the language of the issuing state) along with the date of the convention, but does not bear the two stripes appearing in the upper right corner of the front cover of refugee travel documents.
He was probably born in Mexico, and came to America when he was a baby.
Feel so bad for him...
I hope someone in the government has finally helped this veteran, since there doesn’t seem to be a follow up on this video when it was made 2015.
Outrageous 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
From one fifth generation war veteran to another, I found this to be a shameful disgrace to all who served. American War veteran USS Marvin Shields Desert Storm 1990-94.
I hope he got a American National Passport. He's a citizen alright, and Thank You For Your Service Sir 🙏 May God Bless you all the days of your life !
Why does it matter that he's a veteran? He's a citizen. All citizens have the same rights.
Even French foreign legion will give anyone a French citizenship if the person is satisfied with his service to the legion, wtf is wrong here
I have the same problem. The State Department keeps giving me bullcrap excuses like "your photo is over 6 months old". It costs me $160 each time they do that.
The government is required by law to provide a citizen a passport, and can only withhold that in certain circumstances of treason and such.
MY COUSIN, MY SISTER, AND MYSELF
BORN @HOME ASSISTED BY MIDWIFE
MY UNCLE, MY AUNT, MY GRANDMA
ALL DIED AT MY BIRTH HOME.. ❤🇺🇸
Politicians don't care, all of them, they talk about helping us, but fail to keep thier promise. We the people are on our own.
My 1st doctor and dentist appointment, after boot camp lol
This is just Heartbreaking 💔💔😢
It's worst than just sad.
Chris Gordon Then she must have proof of citizenship. No passport otherwise. Skin color has nothing to do with it
SHe is as white as the driven Mormon Snow.
71 and he can't get dam passport
Apparently, his problem had something to do with the economy in your country. The U.S. doesn't want him to spend his dollar pension outside the country. There's a lot of pensioners opted to live in South East Asia after retirement because they could enjoy much spending their money here compared to the high standard of living in the US.
Do your research he received his passport in December 2015
They had no problem getting him to serve in the US Navy. But when he wanted a passport the US government now said he doesn't exist!
This man is an American leave from the f*** alone
This is not fair after this man fought for America SMH🤦🏽♀️
This is crazy
You should get a passport when you were still young. They are not very strict way back 60 years ago.
Not everybody can afford to travel!
Not many farm workers have a time machine to travel 60 years into the future to find out that he'd have passport problems.
wow! This is deep and shameful. Imprisoned in your own country like a POW except there's no war...to speak.
@ USA 🇺🇸 give him his constitutional rights to have a US Passport of a country he had defended with his life at risk.
God Bless You Mr. Cano a proven brave American Patriot 🇺🇸
This riles me up, and I'm not even American.
This is disgusting. Politicians don't care. Making money for doing nothing.
I would have taken that case to the supreme court, for goodness sake.
Glad I did.
Pay him double for his trouble. It's not fair to honest people.
Great story, but why the hell is the V and associated flag upside down in his shadow box? 1:43 shows this fairly clearly.
For me, he is a DREAMER....whit all my respects....
Why this lady keep asking the same question over and over again
This is strange. Even a foreigner serving in US military has the right to apply for US citizenship just after one year of service. This guy has that citizenship his entire live and it's stil a problem?! Weird!!!

My point was that they both were in a situation that was life threatening. That situation was not of their doing.

Do it my friend. Passport is very important you never know what they plan tomorrow.
