If you didn’t do it, you should have some things to say about why you didn’t do it. If you are caught off guard and you didn’t do it, you might put off more of a ‘wait!’
If you did do it, but you don’t have a good lie, you might be tempted to say ‘why?’ In a sort of ‘Why would you think that!? You didn’t see me!’ way.
It is definitely not fool-proof, as a shocked innocent could possibly ask why. That being said, it is correct more often than not.

I think I understand the "Why?" play.
An innocent person will simply say their alibi. An impostor wants to know why they're being accused, so they'll tailor their lies to the accusations.

I think the reason people say “why” as impostor is because they can’t think of an immediate alibi so they need someone else to talk while they debunk theories about them.
If they were crew (unless it was like early game and they were randomly accused) they would give reason why it’s not them instead of asking “why”

I know this is just highlights but even with that in mind it's amazing how often the "They said why" decision actually works.
