    About Class 142
    ---------------------------
The British Rail Class 142 Pacer are diesel multiple units built for British Rail (BR) from 1985 to 1987. The class were built with a high level of commonality with the widely-used Leyland National bus. They are part of the Pacer family of railbuses. The last set was withdrawn from service in 2020.
The British Rail Class 142 is a two car, Pacer family, Diesel Multiple unit (DMU) built by British Rail Engineering Limited at their Derby works between 1985 and 1987. They are a development of the earlier Class 141 introduced in 1983.
When built they were intended to be used only on rural branch lines. However as of 2015 Class 142's are mainly used on busy commuter service in the north of England, especially in the Manchester area. They are also in used in the Cardiff area of south Wales and until 2009 were operated in Devon and Cornwall by First Great Western.
The Rail Vehicle Accessibility (Interoperable Rail System) Regulations 2008 require that all public passenger trains must be accessible by 2020, and Class 142s will be withdrawn as it is too old for service. The Long Term Passenger Rolling Stock Strategy for the Rail Industry indicates no new DMUs will be ordered in the next 10 years, which means Class 142s will need to be replaced.
On 3 December 2014 the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, announced in his Autumn Statement that the 142 Pacer trains were to be withdrawn from service and replaced with "new and modern vehicles" as part of government plans to create a northern economic "powerhouse".
