In actual primary school education, qualitative gradings are used the same way you use them in your reviews, associating numbers to certain key words or phrases.(In Portugal at least, where im from)
I literally just watched the replay of Bookborn's episode this week so this is perfect timing lol. Thanks for sharing this totally objective and perfect and obviously not convoluted rating system with us, I would give the Rambler rating system a 10/10, that's all that matters 🔥
Ok so this relates to the video in practically no way at all, but i was writing before i clicked on this and i still had spotify playing. The intro with you two doing the lord of the rings music happened, and then flawlessly, perfectly on cue, it was echoed by the actual 'the ring goes south' playing on my PC. I think i just experienced some sort of spiritual enlightenment.
I will always miss the old scale because I believe I truly understood it. That being said after this video I understand why the change was necessary and have no qualms with the swap. Keep up the great videos I look forward to each and every one. P.S. Austin it’s time to read Mistborn
I'd definitely like to see the books that were already reviewed, given ratings based on your new rating system. That way it's easier to compare those book's ratings with books rated with the new system. Like, you guys just gave The Will of the Many rave reviews, and I wanted to look back to see if you two gave The Sword of Kaigen higher or lower scores, but that one was rated using the old system.
Fair! We can start doing that - we do have a more recent review of Sword of Kaigen where we give it 5 stars - thats in a different format of video style since we reviewed it once. It was sort of an “update review” since we’d last read it
Gone Girl: 1☆ for Thought Provoking. I read it on my Kindle, and found a thrifted copy just so I could throw it across the room. 😂 The only book I have ever read that I actively, viscerally, LOATHE. 😂
Yay, I've been looking forward to this video! As soon as Bookborn checks over the system and gives it her stamp of approval, I'll start using it in my own book journal. Lol, kidding, kidding! I'll definitely be implementing this. (I'd been loosely using the Harry Potter OWL system, more for fun than practicality. 😁) On a related note, you mentioned Storygraph once in passing, so naturally, I have to write a brief essay about it. I recently made the switch from Goodreads to Storygraph and love it. In fact, I feel a metaphor coming on. Imagine going from a crowded shopping mall bookstore with attached cafe to a simple, quiet library where you're friends with the librarian. Not only does she keep meticulous records for you, but she also recommends books she thinks YOU will like. Never going back to GR. The only downside I've seen so far is all the auithors are on GR.
Could we get a visual/printable for this? My reading journal uses a 5☆ system, but I've been looking for HOW to rate with more depth and clarity. Thank you for explaining the system! I'm absolutely implementing this, and it would be wonderful to be able to print it out and put it in my journal. ❤ And I really like the differently weighted method, bc I was using your prior system amd the average out higher than how I liked the book taken as a whole.
PEAK THUMBNAIL!! Love seeing your thoughts on how you rate and engage with books. Kinda weird that Austin went on a 12-minute rant on how the paper tastes is his most important category. Even weirder to know that The Red Rising Saga pairs best with Tapatío hot sauce. Love the commitment and everything y'all are doing
Your Chanel and reviews have actually helped me to be more critical about what I read and now this, I’m gonna have a lot of fun using the rambling rating system!!!
@@2ToRamble just a suggestion: this rating system is dope but perhaps you could make a cheat sheet form which you can link in the description of future episodes breaking down books. You can mention at the start you have a video full breakdown of the rating system but if the viewer wants to just understand the gist of it - look at this cheat sheet? Regardless, love the nuance of the updated rating system ❤
Just came back from the American Gods video. I think I want to start using your system. But who knows if l'll actually take the time to think it all through for each book. And ai think if I do, ny ratings are going to go down, on average.
Hey thanks a bunch for this. I had kinda figured most of it out from what you told me before and just watching your reviews, but this definitely helps. Also, you made two massive mistakes today. Firstly, you gave me the idea of rating each episode of your podcast. If you won't do it, I will! I'll need to figure out how, so you'll receive a rating on your next episode from then on. Beware, I will not spare my bad ratings! If you suck, I will cyberbully you. Secondly, speaking of cyberbullying, Austin.....you mentioned Robin Hobb, the greatest author who has ever lived. The First Lady of Epic Fantasy, the Queen of Dragons, the Empress of Tears, Matriarch of the Elderlings. Esteemed Austin and Richard, if you do not read Robin Hobb's masterpieces, you are a pair of [REMOVED BY MY LAWYER]! There! How do you feel now?
Love the video! But Austin your math was backwards. 1-5 middle is 2.5 because there is 5 numbers. And 5 divided by 2 is 2.5. If the scale was 0-5 then hen you add one number so with there being 6 numbers to choose from 3 is the absolute middle.
Ah I see how youre interpreting it but I dont believe that’s right - for example, if the scale were 4-5, the middle would be 4.5 because that is the median number of that selection. We wouldnt divide 5 bc that’s assuming the top number divided by 2 would equal the median of the selected range of the rating scale. 3 is the middle of 1-5 because look at it like this: There are 2 whole numbers higher than 3 (4 and 5) and there are 2 whole numbers lower than 3 (1 and 2) - meaning 3 is the dead center of those, at least for our scale!
@@2ToRamble very well! Thank you for explaining it to me this way it really helped (: I never understood it until now because I was thinking of it more mathematically 😭 or at least mathematically in a different way
Ye have made many nerdy videos and this is by far the nerdiest......but in the best way. I love your fixation on having a good rating system. You have gone really in deoth into your new rating system which is cool to listen to. I love you chuffed you guys are that you have found a rating system that you fully love and agree on. I personally dont spend too much time rsting a book, tv show, movie, anime. I just give a quick 10 second thought on what I'll give it on a 10 pt scale. Mine is an all encompassing vibe rating 😂.
Totally makes sense and we vibe with your wibe rating. Glad you enjoyed us nerding out over our love of this convoluted amazing horrible beautiful raating system
Plot: for me, how tight is the book? Golden Son for me felt like every sentence served a purpose, either moving the plot forward or developimg character. It felt like not a word was wasted. I'm reading Iron Gold and I am about to start skipping Ephraim's parts. I don't see the point of him yet, and it's grating on my nerves. Hopefully it will male sense later.
@2ToRamble Do you apply your star ratings to your categories, too? I am trying to nail down my thoughts on Iron Gold, and if I do the math, then the "characters" category is coming up at a 1.75 for me! 😂 Very few characters really made an impact on me in this book. So, do I go by the word association and say "2.5 = disapointed"? Or, do I go with the math score?
@@janefan1216 I use the word, and for me Iron Gold was flawed so I gave many categories a 2 -- the 2.5 is a less passionate dislike because you were 'dissapointed' not 'very disappointed' (2.25) or thinking it was a genuinely 'flawed' (2) book if that helps! We just line up the more passionate dislike/like with a number to make sense of the scale!
My eyes must deceive me, surely that's not Richard, with hair?!?!??

My rating system:

3 - eh
4 - eh
5 - will reread till the end of time

This is so funny after having just watched your collab vid with Bookborn 😂

Great 👍 video 🎥📽️
Thankyou!
isn’t the wheel of time land called “The Westlands” ?
Richard would know better than me, but I believe that’s a region on the world, but not the world’s name
I can forgive Richard for disliking Kingkiller, but a one star rating for The Communist Manifesto? That's a bridge too far.
5* = floored 2* = flawed.... This seams problematic for a podcast 🤣 (love you guys, I'm just messing with you)
😁😂
I love your guys and your energy but I hate your rating system lol
Most people hate us and the rating system so we’ll take this 🤌
