    Crying watching this . He is too nice of a man. He gave someone who put him in jail.. away from families for years a chance. Mahathir betrayed him again, not making him Prime Minister after this interview. I just can't imagine the patience he has. You are our well deserved 10th prime minister. No one else should sit in that position. They have denied you since 1998 and now your time has come.

      You are easy to be fooled. If the mainstream media praises your leader, you know you are screwed. He is a U S agent. Many will not believe me but I bet he will destroy Malaysia by taking an anti-china position. He will likely cancel all china’s BRI project that is so important for Malaysia’s economy

    It's true that the interviewer asked harsh questions. But Anwar handled them elegantly. I'm actually glad she did asked all those hard questions. Shying away from critical critism might not be a good way of learning the cold hard truth. Anwar speaks like a true leader

    Watching from 2022 now on, I am so glad that his dream of being prime minister is fulfilled. He has never give up despite all the obstacles throw at him by his political opponents. Really also props to the Agong who desires to see a government that could rally the Rakyat, and have more ethic representation in parliament, where all voices could be heard. I am confident under his leadership and eloquence, Malaysia will start to prosper then ever before. And is also my sincere hope that even staunch supporters from BN or PN could give him the support that he deserves, is about time to move on from inward-looking racial politics and start focusing on things that truly matters.

    I disagree with the many comments saying this journalist was biased. I think she did her job well, applied some proper critical analysis with her questions and properly interviewed Anwar and made him cover some very good topics. Overall, I personally think this was a very enlightening interview.

  • @MrAlcidas
    @MrAlcidas 6 років тому +120

    Many comments from Malaysians criticising the journalist, but this is what British journalism is like. Her job is not to make the interviewee feel comfortable and at ease. It is to make him feel uncomfortable, because that way, you get more sincere answers. In a way, Lyse Doucet has done Anwar and Malaysia a big favour with her skeptical line of questioning, because the sincerity in Anwar's answers comes out all the more. It is striking, and will go a long way towards reassuring both the Malaysian electorate, and the political figures involved that the compromise struck between Anwar and Mahathir is genuine.

    • @arshad_nazran
      @arshad_nazran 6 років тому +11

      I think us Malaysians are moving towards that. 'British' Journalism as you fervently put it, is somewhat alien to our culture. Most educated in media, politics and the experienced professionals are used to this. The general population, however, are not. Give it time and grace. I do however agree with you, it's the heart of a good journalist, being able to question with a skeptical mode. But this is not hardtalk.

    • @MrAlcidas
      @MrAlcidas 6 років тому +9

      Yes, it is a well-known practice among western journalists, who are free to squeeze their politicians hard in pursuit of the truth. If you are relaxed and friendly with your interviewee, they will simply provide you with answers that they have already prepared before the interview and rehearsed in their minds. But if you push them hard and make them feel uncertain and uncomfortable, you are more likely to get a more spontaneous, and therefore a more sincere, reply.
      I think there are several points in the interview where Anwar is visibly uncomfortable but, to his credit, he answers well and comes across all the more sincerely precisely because he has been made to feel uncomfortable.

"While he always has the option to find a lucrative job overseas, he think about what will happen to the young who will continue the struggle while the leader enjoying life outside... I will endure, crazy as I am... but then he thought it was the right decision. Anuar Ibrahim.. Thank you DSAI!!" We Malaysians want to know him more since he is prime minister in waiting. We don't want Malaysia to be worse when he takes over in two years. If she asks lame questions, this would be a boring interview to watch. I wish the interview would be longer or there will be more interviews with DSAI. Good job BBC.

      I agree totally. She was accusatory and patronising and so doubting Anwar. Datuk Seri has been the Mandela of Malaysia through his persecution by UMNO and Mahatir and Najib in the past. He does not need to answer the condescending questions she asked persistently, doubting him. Try spending 10 years unjustly in jail and see how she would feel. This man is a hero. He is a giant of Malaysia and I hope he is PM very soon. A just and fitting reward for one so persecuted. A new Mandela for Asia.

    We must understand where the journalist comes from, as she has to be hard hitting and sharp to get Anwar to give his actual thought process about his plans with Dr. Mahathir on new Malaysia. And I tend to think both Anwar and Dr. Mahathir did the right thing. Given Anwar’s past predicaments, it is not easy for him to compromise with Dr. Mahathir. It is only a man with strong sense of commitment and highest level of maturity can one adopt this approach. That is why most of us are the average people who cannot think too far. Honestly I am of the opinion that the journalist had done a good job by putting the toughest questions to Anwar for his best answers. Otherwise she is another average journalist doing a normal job as done by most people in the profession.

    lol everyone. She's a good journalist. Asking the hard questions that need to be answered. Speaking to Anwar as more than an equal. Western journalists have different training and tact, and she's managed to get the answers out of Anwar. Most Malaysian interviewers just regurgitate the same predictable questions to the point that they are superfluous because you'd know Anwar's answers to them. At 12:12 when she asked Anwar if he wanted to be PM, I wish he had a much stronger response. He should of said 'Yes, I do, and I am the best candidate/most qualified etc.', instead of saying it was consensus, or that he should be given the chance. Didn't express his desire enough. No one wants a half hearted leader.

    The interviewer doubts too much. There's a lot of trust between Dr M and Anwar and his wife now. When the opposition won, the King wanted to make Anwar's wife the PM, but she said there's an agreement between her and Dr M. Dr M should be very grateful to Anwar and wife.

      I dont know if PKR would have won without Mahathir's support. The public voted for Tun M and PH, the whole plot of the past election was Tun M amending his mistakes of his dark past and moving towards a true democracy. This man was no shy to kleptocracy himself. Regardless of the King's so called wisdom, Mahathir owes nobody nothing. The two top minds just got even. So to say a symbiotic relation, they need each other for the present state.

      If Anwar becomes the next PM, Singapore will become HISTORY. The BRITISH never left Singapore, and are in control of everything. If not so, you think Mahathir would not have gotten rid of the Royalty of the Federated states. Well MAHATHIR nearly remove their power grip on the parliament, but suddenly failed. I suspected the BRITISH royalty had a hand in the operational of Malaya, Singapore as well. I remembered when Mahathir first became PM, he wanted to do away with the British control, had asked Malaysians to look East (Japan). But I suspected the Chinese there objected... more the meets the eye... such things relating the British control must be investigated by MALAYSIANS if you really want freedom from the past colonial power. Malaysia is not independent yet.

    There is nothing wrong with the journalist and her methods of questioning. That is what journalism in a freer environment looks like. Give Anwar some credit. He is educated and well read. Our kampung boy is an intellectual who can hold his own. This interview made me cry. He is up there amongst people like Ghandi, Bhutto, Aung San Suu Kyi and Mandela. And the challenge for proponents of democracy who manage to leave incarceration out of the front door: Can they remain faithful to their ideals and not be blinded and swayed but those who opened the prison door for them. I hope Anwar will be able to catch up, reflect and enjoy his time with people nearest and dearest to him before getting thrown back into the colosseum. I hope to God Tun Mahathir honours the deal (I still don't trust him, but I need to believe). We do need someone to take Malaysia to another level of cultural philosophical maturity and I believe his experience now equips him with the wisdom to do that. I feel proud whenever I watch my leaders response with genuine answers and conduct themselves with such elegance and dignity especially in internationally broadcasted interviews.
