I started fishing around that time too, I had gotten a rod/reel combo (push button) and I was fishing with that until the reel broke, so I bought myself a baitcaster reel to put on the rod (probably not the best combination) however I'll gladly use it and learn it since I have it :) I got a abu garcia blackmax, budget but enough to get me started. Thanks for being there for all of us Norm!
Does anyone have any suggestions for some budget friendly baitcasting rods? I'm still quite new but I feel like the baitcasting rods are thinner and bend easier at the tip which i see a lot of people throwing, it bends at the end and gives a nice thwipping sound, the rod i have now (the one from the combo) is quite thick and doesn't bend too well, maybe the cause of the backlash/birdsnest i get sometimes?
