Enjoyed watching this. I just purchased a Toyota 4Runner and I'm looking at bringing her back to life. She needs TLC. Its nice to see that their are videos that can help. Thanks for sharing.
Looks great man. Most detailed video I've seen on painting chrome to paint match. I will be trying it on a completely different vehicle (Bright white 07 Ram 1500) but I gained quite a bit of knowledge none the less. Thanks!
+Alex Pegorsch Thanks for taking the time to post your feedback, I am really happy it helped you, best of luck with your project, I hope you like the results. I still love this subtle change.
Much agreed. I've heard that since it is a different material (steel) it would require much more sanding. But I will definitely be doing that also. If you end up doing it, you should definitely post a video of that as well!
Awesome video. I have been searching hi and low for a grill surround for my new '16 CM Tundra that should be arriving in March. The truck is white and I ordered the black billet grill with LED daytime running lights. I want the hood bulge and the grill surround to be black as well instead of chrome so it will have a very storm trooper look to it. This will be the route I take to get what I want.
Thanks Chad, I am really happy with the way it turned out. Clearly this took a bit more time that dipping would have, and there is no turning back. I think it was worth the effort though and I am not interested in turning back. Happy holidays
I must of missed when you talked about prepping the chrome for the primer, but what did you do to make the scuffing? Was that sanding? Just not sure what to do for that step. Great video and truck looks exceptional!!
looks great however. on plastic i tend to dissolve the chrome in bleach or superclean as it tends to peel as the grill gets older. also doesnt leave scratches on the surface as you dont need to sand. just clean with an adhesion promoter and spray then bake at 200 degrees and it comes out glass smooth.
If you really want a good color ,wait 10 minutes and use a tack cloth and lightly dust the over not touching to much ,let it hang and float over in the end the results will be worth it, learned it ,painting my color match bumper's and end caps on my 2018 Tacoma,Came out Factory!
I knew by the way this lad was taking every step thoroughly and patiently that it was most likely going to turn out great, by my goodness, it looks simply fantastic. I have the same year truck and everything and mine looks nothing like his, his looks brand new!
Looks nice. In the paint industry, you Must sand metal, chrome, and plastic to get a "mechanical bond" for primer. Then degrease, then Epoxy primer. Etch primer doesn't hold to plastics or chrome. Not just any self etching primer will do, needs to bond to chrome. This is a good bet, available on Amazon: amzn.to/3CMrLFC Mine has held up great, I still have and love this truck and this is still my favorite subtle change.
Hey, thanks for the step-by-step - I think painting a car is intimidating for a lot of people, myself definitely included. Simple question for you: Where do you get the color coat? I imagine you take your car's color code somewhere...and then what do you load it into to apply it? Thanks!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to post your question. You can find color matched paint in a quality spray can on Amazon beware color matched paints are usually not cheap. If you would like help finding it, feel free to ask, just let me know what color, year, make and model your car/truck is and I would be glad to help. Best of luck on your project.
That looks awesome great video have been thinking of doing the same to my tundra had it plasti dipped but not a huge fan i was also thinking of color matching the front and rear bumpers any insight
I like how you color matched the chrome grill to the color of the truck . How is it holding up to stone chips? I painted the grill on my truck but driving on the Highway chipped it up .
Nice job. Showing the mess-up actually helps because most of my DIY paint jobs were fails for one reason or another, but mostly inexperience. In retrospect I suppose you would have sanded with 2000 grit prior to the first clear coat to avoid the orange peel effect, right? I suppose doing this on the steel bumper would not look right, but did you consider that?
Thanks for watching and posting your feedback. The best thing I could have done to avoid the orange peel would have been to test the can of clear before I applied it to the part. I just had some bad luck with that can. The replacement can went on like glass and stayed that way. A small test would have saved a bunch of time. I ended covering the chrome bumpers with black plasti dip, I am really happy with the way they turned out. I debated about going with a coat of bedliner but that would have required a lot more prep work and I am not sure I would have liked it as much. Plasti dip is easy to undo, which is also nice.
I used dupli-color etching primer, here is an amazon link: amzn.to/2hKBYad, you could also use an epoxy primer but it is more expensive and I had great results with the etching. here is a link to an epoxy option: amzn.to/2hGqWWE I agree the color match couldn't have been better. Thank you for watching and posting your question.
GetOtterHere Before the primer, I dry sanded with 220, then 600 just to scuff it, then cleaned with foaming invisible glass cleaner several times, and wax and grease remover before primer.
Where on earth did you find the magnetic grey metallic spray paint to match the toyota paint??????? I want to do this to my truck SO BAD but never start a project without massive amounts of research prior to the undertaking
Amazon, this is the link to the one I used amzn.to/3bVvUbP, but you just need the color code which is 1F9 for slate metallic to search for it at your favorite retailer.
I recently did this same thing on my truck based off of your video, I used dupli color clear and for some reason I can't get a glossy finish like on my hood.
I know this post is old. But just in case you need to know how on another project. Don't use dupli-color clear or any other 1 stage clear. Use a 2k clear from a auto paint shop or find a good 2k clear on amazon with good reviews. They also sell them in cans that you push a red button on bottom to release the catalyst or hardener. 2k clears have 2 parts.
Great job! If I were to get bushwacker pocket style fender flares that are black, should I go about painting them the same way you did? How would you say I paint those because it seems like you really know what you're doing!
Thanks for the video - I just bought a new 2016 Tundra TRD Offroad, wanted to color match the grille and hood bulge surrounds. Was told by more than one auto body/paint guy that you can't paint chrome.. Where do you get color matched paint in a spray can?
Congrats on your new rig! You can paint chrome, it's just not easy, so it's tough for paint shops to guarantee. Let me know what color your Tundra is and I will try to find your color matched paint.
@@AutoDIY Hey, I really like the video, and your other content as well. I'm hoping to do the same thing to my grill surround with the same color, (metallic slate, color code 1F9). Any chance you can point me in the direction of where you bought your paint cans? I appreciate it!
Yes, one can of each should do the trick. Thank you for the great compliment, and thank you for watching, best of luck on your project I am sure it's going to turn out great.
was the base coat a glass finish before the clear? Im painting mine and the base is alittle rough, wouldn't say orange peel but not smooth ...trying to see if I need to wet sand base before clear to get rid of it and or with the clear take care of it
Smooth is the goal, very fine rough on the color coat is okay and the clear should smooth it out. If it is bumpy like orange peel I would wet sand, and re-coat with color before applying clear. Best of luck
what did you use to remove the wax and grease remover? did you pre-prime before the etching primer and a post etching intermediate stabilizing primer afterward?
The mirrors were part of the Tow Package in 2008. I did a quick search on Amazon for them and this was the first one that came up: amzn.to/2uuNqPrf but there are tons of other aftermarket options for these mirrors. Thanks for watching and good luck.
Thank you for the kind comment, I am really happy with the way it turned out too. Yes, I have thought about doing the bumpers with Plasti Dip, I am a huge fan of Plasti Dip, for lots of reasons, number one being that if you don't like it you can always remove it. I am enjoying the new look as it is now, the chrome around the grill was glaring at me, the bumpers don't bother me too much -- yet. Good luck with your Black Tundra, I am sure you will love this change too.
Solid job sir, bummer about all the orange peel tho. Any educated guesses on how to avoid that issue or possibly what caused it? Also after wet sanding the video quickly cut to the finished piece. Did you re clear it with a different clear or just throw on a fresh coat? Thanks for all the feedback this far! Very sharp look that I intend to do as well.
Andrew Beggin The orange peel was a huge bummer. You are correct I did end up putting a coat of dupli-color clear over it after wet sanding. I believe I had a bad can of clear that caused the orange peel, it just was not spraying well at all. The dupli-color clear on the other hand went on like a dream. The trick is to put the clear on heavy, long slow strokes, but not so heavy that it runs, it will appear glossy and beautiful while it's wet when you do it right, then just stand back and let it dry. It will look as good dry as it did while it was wet, and you don't even need to wet sand, especially on a small part like this one. Avoid my mistake, test your can before you apply it to the part, if it comes out clumpy don't spray your part. If it comes out smooth and shiny, you are in business. Thank you for watching and taking the time to ask your questions, best of luck on an orange peel free result.
These cans of cheap spray really don't atomize very well. That's why the orange peel. You can go to the automotive paint store and buy a 2k can of black trim paint and it'll atomize better. Also, when painting, do 50% overlapping and hold nozzle at 90 degrees about 5 inches above surface.
Did the same job on my Ram 2500. Duplicolor paint in junk! My color did not match and it was supposed to be a factory match. I bought a high gloss bright white kylon from Wally World and it turned out perfect.
At the shop we usually use hvlp spray guns for primer, sealer, base, and clear. But a little tip for rattle cans is that you can put them in some warm water and it helps it kinda lay down better on stuff✔
Trevor James I picked up the color matched paint from Amazon, the seller's name is "scratch wizard". Beware it is the most expensive spray paint you will ever buy. I imagine there are less expensive ways to go, but their color matching is perfect. Same process could be used for your front and rear bumpers. I bet it turns out great. Good luck with your project.
+Heriberto Martinez You shouldn't have to wet sand the clear if it sprays well, I had a crappy can of clear so I didn't have any choice, and yes I applied a new coat of clear over the top after wet sanding to make it glassy. Before primer clean it really well with degreaser/wax remover, then sand the heck out of it, then clean it as well as possible before hitting it with etching primer. Best of luck to you on your project, and thank you for watching and posting your questions.
If that part is chrome plated plastic, then self-etching primer should not have been used. It is for metal surfaces. Plastic parts should use a primer made for plastic.
PlastiDip would have been a lot less work and reversible, I just really wanted a subtle factory looking touch and I couldn't be happier with the result.
Nice job bro, i just did my 09 ram 1500 thanks to your video. Let me ask you this, how long did you wait to install it back on the truck after clear coat? Can say dust free in 10 min, but can i use the truck 1/2 hour after clear coat the grille? Tks in advance.
I would give it 24 hours to cure before installing, even after a day fresh paint can be a little soft, the longer you can wait the better. Enjoy that truck.
+warehouse321 Thanks for the kind feedback, I looked up your truck's color code for you, it is 202. This is a link to some color match paint on Amazon if it helps you: amzn.to/1OuYxIZ. Good luck on your project.
+Auto DIY thanks for finding that link, I'll definitely use that in the future. I ended up going with a duplicolor Toyota match, but I don't think I went heavy enough with the coats of paint. I'm happy with the results, but it's not quite as "factory" looking as I would've hoped. Next time! Here's a link to my process/results if you're interested. www.tacomaworld.com/threads/painting-grill-surround-full-write-up.431936/ Thanks again for the advice and the useful video!
So it's been over 2 months now since you have done this DIY. How has It held up? Any chipping of the paint or anything you would have done different besides the clear coat? Nice work by the way. Planning on doing this to my Tundra but mine is salsa red.
It is holding up great, no chips at all (yet). I will give it more time, after about 6 months I will make a follow up video to show you how it's doing. Good news though if it does chip, it's not that tough to fix. I think it will look great on your salsa red truck too, this is one of those changes that I wish I made years ago. Good luck with your project.
That was an awesome video, I really learned a lot. I'd like to do this project my self on a 04 Dodge Durango. The color is similar to the one of the tundra. I'd like to get the color as accurate to the original color of my truck. How can I do that? You did a great job at matching! I'd really appreciate the help.
+Enrique De La O Hi Enrique, I did some searching on google and amazon, if your Durango is graphite gray pearl metallic this link should take you to the color match paint you need for your project. I sincerely hope this helps: amzn.to/1Ws6Q11. Thank you for posting the great feedback and good luck with your project.
+Auto DIY Thank you so much for replying. I think it is that color, I'm going to check it out. I definitely appreciate your help. I hope to see more of your projects.
+Auto DIY Thank you so much for replying. I think it is that color, I'm going to check it out. I definitely appreciate your help. I hope to see more of your projects.
I used duplicolor automotive clear, here is an amazon link if it helps: amzn.to/2oNDBuz Slow heavy strokes, and it came out like glass, no sanding or buffing needed. Best of luck on your project, I am sure you are going to love the end result.
+Auto DIY update, got a couple of splotches on the top part of the surround but I can fix that later if it becomes an eyesore. I'm kinda nervous about using heavy coats because I don't want any running in the clear coat.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to post your questions, lift is just a Toytec 3 inch leveling kit up front, with the 1 inch front differential drop and a 1 inch lift in the rear. Tires are 305/55/20's
Does the paint peel off? If so how long did it take? I'm asking because I went to a body shop to get this done on my Tundra but they said it wasn't worth it because it'll peel off quickly.
I have not had any peeling issues, after 2.5 years of driving it does have a few tiny chips in it but that is the nature of anything painted on the front of a truck . This is one of my favorite subtle changes to this truck, I just wish I did it sooner.
So when you got done water sanding the clear coat did you give it another coat of clear? And did you buff it after everything? It turned really good I wanna try to do my truck lol

Damn thats a nice job getting it to color match really close!
I would like a resume like this. Sand with 2000,3 paint coats, sand w 2000,3 clear coats. Awesome job man.
a new black plastic grill for me is only 68 bucks, deff worth it over all this work/time
GOOD JOB, IT REALLY MAKES THE TRUCK LOOK BETTER.
something tells you are a perfectionist. Good job man
Degrease before sanding. Otherwise you could be pushing wax into the scratches :)
which sand paper should use before cycle steel rim ?

So much better with it painted nice work, nice process.
wow truck looks great man! color completely matches the factory paint.
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a nice comment.
warning... i tried the heat gun while painting... just be careful you dont accidentally blow dust onto your wet paint!
that being said I love the work you did! well done!
Add a little dish soap in your water, it makes it easier to wet sand.
Gary Hess Great tip, thanks for posting and thanks for watching
I subscribed cuz you explain in detail everything that you do
I gave this comment a thumbs up, because this was kind of you to say and do.
Looks good, 3m it too, won't hold up to rock chips. After the wet sand a good power polish would make that clear coat pop
I must of missed when you talked about prepping the chrome for the primer, but what did you do to make the scuffing? Was that sanding? Just not sure what to do for that step. Great video and truck looks exceptional!!
Looks like a scotch brite pad.
0000 steel wool works great.
looks great however. on plastic i tend to dissolve the chrome in bleach or superclean as it tends to peel as the grill gets older. also doesnt leave scratches on the surface as you dont need to sand. just clean with an adhesion promoter and spray then bake at 200 degrees and it comes out glass smooth.

Instead of the one part Duplicate Color clear, use Sprax Max 2k Glamour Clear - it will have same durability as factory automotive clear.
Thanks for the tip, I will try it on a future project. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to post.
I wanna do this on my 08 outback but man that takes a lot of patience and finesse

Torey Young I would use a plastic-specific primer. Epoxy will not adhere as well. But otherwise agreed
I'd actually advocate removing the chrome from the plastic completely and refinishing the virgin material: ua-cam.com/video/CDF3A3xUYeY/v-deo.html
Looks good after all that work
Well done sir. I too am not a fan of chrome and plan to do this on my Tundra
You are going to love this change, best of luck on your project. Thank you for watching and taking the time to post.
Could I just use any self etching primer? And how did this hold up? Thanks so much for the diy!!
Not just any self etching primer will do, needs to bond to chrome. This is a good bet, available on Amazon: amzn.to/3CMrLFC

At the shop we usually use hvlp spray guns for primer, sealer, base, and clear. But a little tip for rattle cans is that you can put them in some warm water and it helps it kinda lay down better on stuff✔
Looks hot good job
What is that cooler to the left after you take off the grill? Was that factory? Or you added an aftermarket transcooler? Great video!!!
Good eye, that is part of the factory transmission cooler that came with the tow package on this truck.
Also what paint did you use for the top coat my truck is the same color its a very good match
After u wet Sand it did u apply more Clear Coat. And before the primer do have to sand the grill or just a real good cleaning
Did you use clear coat after sanding it with the 1500??
Great job man. Imma do mine on mu tacoma. Hate that chrome
Agreed, chrome can suck it.
If that part is chrome plated plastic, then self-etching primer should not have been used. It is for metal surfaces. Plastic parts should use a primer made for plastic.
Where did you go to find the paint match can?
Amazon, but beware color matched paint is not cheap: amzn.to/41hE0Ur
How many cans did you use for the paint match?
1 can of color
Nice job and truck 💪🏾
How come you didn't use plastidip? Was it just to get the color match? thanks for the videos.
How did you get the paint color to match so well?
Hi, awesome video! How has the paint held up till now? Thanks!
Still looks great, it is one of those changes that I wish I made years ago.
This is so easy to do! By the way how much do you charge to do mine?
If we were friends, it would be 200 bucks, since we aren't friends yet, it's free.
So you didn’t have to strip the chrome? Just scuffed, primed and painted?
I recommend just stripping the chrome. Super easy. Just use the Heavy Duty Easy Off oven cleaner. Melts chrome right off plastic
Nice job! I've got a black 2012 Tacoma that I want to try this on. How did you get such a close color match for the paint?
+warehouse321 Thanks for the kind feedback, I looked up your truck's color code for you, it is 202. This is a link to some color match paint on Amazon if it helps you: amzn.to/1OuYxIZ. Good luck on your project.
+Auto DIY thanks for finding that link, I'll definitely use that in the future. I ended up going with a duplicolor Toyota match, but I don't think I went heavy enough with the coats of paint. I'm happy with the results, but it's not quite as "factory" looking as I would've hoped. Next time! Here's a link to my process/results if you're interested. www.tacomaworld.com/threads/painting-grill-surround-full-write-up.431936/
Thanks again for the advice and the useful video!
Do you think the 2000 grit wet sand would have prevented the orange peel before putting on the clear?
Sadly no, the orange peel was caused by a bad can of clear. The new can of clear didn't need to be sanded at all. It just came out like glass.
@@AutoDIY was it just regular duplicolot clear coat you used both times?
Great job dude...
Hello what dupli color did you use for prep and color Bc I'm trying to do my chrome bumper on silverado
Look good before you started to me but what do I know.
You know what you like, thanks for sharing your opinion.
What brand paint did you use it matched good?
Beware it is overpriced, amazon has it: amzn.to/3wdx4uh Just search for your color code. In my case slate metallic is 1F9. Good luck.
Looks great man!!! I'm about to paint the surround on my tacoma. Wha kind of clear coat did you use the 2nd time?
I used duplicolor automotive clear, here is an amazon link if it helps: amzn.to/2oNDBuz
Slow heavy strokes, and it came out like glass, no sanding or buffing needed. Best of luck on your project, I am sure you are going to love the end result.
+Auto DIY Thanks a bunch man!!! I'm about to lay down the color coat right now. I'm following your video and so far I haven't had any problems.
+Auto DIY update, got a couple of splotches on the top part of the surround but I can fix that later if it becomes an eyesore. I'm kinda nervous about using heavy coats because I don't want any running in the clear coat.
What size lift u have on the truck and what size tires?
Looks nice man
Thanks for watching and taking the time to post your questions, lift is just a Toytec 3 inch leveling kit up front, with the 1 inch front differential drop and a 1 inch lift in the rear. Tires are 305/55/20's
Nice job!
how long did you wait in between primer and color coats?
and how long did you wait in between applying the primer and color?
+Frazo961 Just wait for it to dry, it could be days between primer and color if you'd like, but no less than 30 minutes.
+Auto DIY great thanks for the help!
How did you color matched the paint?
Search for your year and model's color code, then search for color matched paint for that code.
Yes after sanding I put on another coat of clear, no need to buff the new coat of clear it came out like glass.
Awesome gonna give it a try see what happens. Thanks for the info
Looks good.
Can you tell me what paint you used for this?
how many coats of clear did you apply the first time?
