Despite COVID-19 causing air travel demand to plummet, United Airlines has announced a new long-haul route - Chicago to Tel Aviv.
Air travel demand is gradually beginning to recover, so airlines are adding new routes. Most of these new routes have been short-haul or domestic, but we’re finally seeing more long-haul routes.
In September 2020, United Airlines will begin passenger flights from Chicago to Tel Aviv three times a week using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
Chicago is United’s fourth route into Tel Aviv following Newark, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles. Overall, United has grown significantly in Tel Aviv.
So, why is United adding a new route in the middle of a pandemic? There’s two key factors that appear to be influencing this flight.
The first factor is to keep up with high cargo demand. Because Israel has a major pharmaceutical industry, a constant flow of medical supplies will be important.
This new Chicago to Tel Aviv route is likely driven by cargo, and having passengers on board will allow United to gain some additional revenue.
The second factor is defending against EL AL. The airline was supposed to launch Tel Aviv to Chicago in March 2020, but they had to postpone due to COVID-19.
With United jumping on Chicago to Tel Aviv before EL AL, they may be able to prevent EL AL from flying to this important market. United can continue to increase its presence in the Tel Aviv market.
Finally, in September 2020 United will also resume once-weekly passenger flights from Chicago to Hong Kong on the Boeing 777-300ER.
This comes as a surprise because Chicago to Hong Kong was suspended in September 2019, much before COVID-19 affected the aviation industry.

Well done, United Aerlines. However, why not allow EL AL Aerlines to continue with their plans to fly into/out of Chicago? EL AL could fill in on the days United is not serving the route. Just a thought.
That would be great for customers, but EL AL and United aren’t partners and they don’t seem to have any intention at the moment of coordinating schedules.

That's cool. I think more United flights will come to both Chicago and Newark because those two airports are main hube for United Airlines. Also, their 777-300ER is very common. At LAX, it has been using so many 787-9 Dreamliner routes.
United at Chicago is definitely seeing growth with Tel Aviv and the resumption of Hong Kong. Newark on the other hand may be more difficult to recover. United released new 8-K filings today and revealed that bookings out of Newark are 84% down from last year while other cities are only down by an average of 73%. In the long term however, both hubs will be important for United’s rebound to the transatlantic market.
When United begins flying from Tel Aviv to Chicago, will there be a water salute for the first plane or will it be treated like a regular flight? I'm not really familiar with the procedure.
Traditionally there should be a water canon salute for the inaugural since it’s a new route.
