  • Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong issued an apology on Tuesday, one day after a flight heading from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence, injuring 30 passengers and killing a 73-year-old British man.
“On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” Phong said in a video message. “We are very sorry for the traumatic experience that everyone on board [Flight] SQ321 went through.”
Recovering from their own injuries, passengers recounted their personal experiences aboard the fatal flight. “I saw people from across the aisle just going completely horizontal, hitting the ceiling and landing back down in really awkward positions,” 28-year-old passenger Dzafran Azmir told reporters. “People getting massive gashes in the head,” he added.
“Every single cabin crew I saw was injured. I didn't see anybody who worked for Singapore Airlines that was not injured,” 54-year-old Andrew Davis said, adding that he comforted the wife of the deceased passenger - who was also injured - for a while.
“I think this incident will prompt airlines, whether it's an official mandate or not. But airlines saying we recommend you keep your seatbelt fastened while seated. They should be saying it is mandatory,” Airlineratings Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said.
Thomas says the incident was simply weather-related and that the pilots responded as professionally as they could, adding that it will not impact their ratings. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and Singapore Airlines is cooperating, according to the CEO.

Clear air turbulence happens. Rarely but it happens. It happened on a flight I was on 46 yrs ago. It is lightning speed fast & it is horrible. Cabin crew and passengers injured but thankfully no fatalities. It took me 12 years to get on a jet & I only did it because I did not want to pass on my fear to my child.
I tell people never to take the seat belt off, loosen it but keep it on. No one listens. They think I am paranoid.
Deepest condolences to the family of the gentleman who lost his life🙏💙
Prayers for the cabin crew & injured passengers.

Flown many times on SIA and they are excellent- condolences to family of deceased passenger and wish all a full recovery. Full credit to SIA crew who continued to help passengers even though they were injured themselves, that is exemplary! Also credit to cockpit crew who also had seconds to respond and brought aircraft safely to land!

I have experienced in a renowned air lines several times that pilot announced turbulence, seat belt sign after it over. So we should keep seatbelt on all the time during travelling for our own interests.

      What do you want?
A statement of responsibility for a weather event that no human being has control over?
The whole accident is tragic but what do you expect the CEO of Singapore Airlines can do about it other than expressing regret about the accident.
This is life. Things happen and people sometimes get hurt or worse when nature shows its ugly face.
Keeping your seatbelt fastened at all times when in your seat is not exactly a new revelation when flying on board an airplane. This has been the advice for as long as I can remember but there are always people who don't follow this advice. People, who flies on board a commercial airplane also sometimes need to go to the lavatory which means that it's virtually impossible to guarantee that nobody gets hurt when encountering an event like this.
When the first sudden movements of the airplane start, the pilots will turn on the fasten seatbelt signs but the problem is that there is no way the pilots can tell how severe the turbulence is going to be or how quickly it may get worse.
In this case, the airplane went from just feeling slight turbulence to an extreme event. People, who were not strapped into their seats, had no chance and this includes the cabin crew.
The culture today where people always look for somebody to blame is disgusting. Nobody controls the weather.
Life is sometimes a risky business.
Any loss of life under conditions like this is deeply regrettable and tragic but there is no really any way to ensure it can never happen.

What do you want him to do?
There is no possible way the SIA CEO can satisfy the cravings of the public because the general public are usually always just looking to blame somebody and looking to turn the event into a sensation.
Should the CEO apologize for a weather event that only becomes more frequent and extreme because the human race is doing their best to destroy the blue planet we live on?
The SIA CEO will most likely ensure that all involved passengers, crew and their families will receive all the possible help and assistance they need.

Most of today’s sia crop of pilots are stereotypes as compared to early day pilots of yesteryear who were trained by accomplished military pilots. Today’s pilots are classified as so called ‘captains’ once u have accumulated certain hours of 777 service as coplilots n passing written exams. The 777 is one of the safest, full of technology n be able to detect weather conditions beforehand, therefore the pilots decision is a key factor in this scenario.
