- Based on the Broadway play by Neil Simon, this tells the story of two mismatched friends, Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. Felix is a neat, tidy, and healthy nut, a photographer at a portrait studio, and a connoisseur of classical music. Because of this, his wife divorced Felix and threw him out of his apartment for good. Desperately in the need of a place to live, he moves in with his longtime childhood friend, Oscar Madison, a sports journalist for the New York Times. What he realizes is that Oscar is the exact opposite of him: sloppy, messy, and doesn't eat the right foods. Felix's cleaning, hygienic tips, and healthiness annoys Oscar while Oscar's crazy world of living like a pig upsets Felix. But in the process they'll learn that love, trust, and friendship are more important than living in different worlds Tony Randall and Jack Klugman star.Al Molinaro 1970
I was one of those children in Central Park in NYC doing the May Pole dance.
Diamondgirl King If you're serious - Cool!!
Diamondgirl King I was also one of the kids in the park, it wasn't Central Park, it was Astoria Park in Queens and we were dancing the alley cat. you could see me right behind Oscar. My School was PS 111 from LIC
Douglas Perkins Haha!! If you are serious and talking about the scene @ 1:01, that's Central Park in Manhattan, New York. Not Astoria Park in Queens, New York. The Gulf+Building (now the Trump International Hotel and Tower), located: Columbus Circle, Manhattan and The Majestic, located at 115 Central Park West, between West 71st Street & West 72nd Street, Manhattan can be seen in the background.
Wow That's Lovely
So was I , I was,the one with the afro behind felix
The theme and imagery are mindblowingly nostalgic for a child of the 70's, positive in a way only childhood can preserve, and musically joyous!
Perfect comment.
Right? It's like the world was a much better place when we were kids.
I have to wonder if Oscar and Felix had sexual relations
@@nastypiglosi1788 Hahaha. That was so funny.
@@nastypiglosi1788 I would imagine from your "name" that you're a man who had fantasies of a having 3-way with both of them.
The chemistry between Tony Randall and Jack Klugman makes this show so rewatchable. The supporting cast was fantastic as well.
One of the greatest shows in TV history with a great introduction
Underrated sitcom
I loved this show
Absolutely and without question 💯💯💯
Omg this would come on at 11:00 p.m. followed by The Honeymooners at 11:30 and then Star Trek then Twilight Zone. This was in the mid to late 80s. I have always been a night owl and would stay up with the television on low to watch it. Oh how I miss those days. 😪
Sheels1976 yes!!!
Sheels you must be a Gen Xer too. Maybe from NYC area as well? WPIX had that late evening lineup after the 10pm news for most of the 80s. Remember the rare time (usually Friday night or school breaks/vacations) watching these now classics including this.
garry marshal also created happy days laverne and shirley and mork and mindy
Sometimes i'd make at all to way to 'The Rat Patrol' Wow... The Good Old Days... Don't forget the 4:30 Movie...
Was always curious what Felix & Oscar we’re doing at what appears to be a festival of some sort for Indians or middle easterners with the streamers in background. What was that all about? Was that from an episode I never saw? I’m from NYC & gen x. 11pm was prime time for classic tv. Odd couple, honeymooners, Star Trek & twilight zone then some bars on the screen followed by the nation anthem.
Absolutely love this series! I first started watching this on WPIX-11 in early 1986. I could watch this show over and over and NEVER get tired of it. THATS what makes a great series.
Classic !! I grew up on this show and will never get tired of it !!!
Yeah; came on eastern time at 9pm on ABC. When the theme song played on Friday it was officially the weekend for me
I am late to the game but with both of you!!!!
Rip Penny Marshall, Garry Marshall,Tony Randall,Jack Klugman and Al Molinaro!!
Amen THAT, Brother Comrade!! :)
And William Woodson who passed away in 2017. He Narrated The Show between 1970 and 1975.🤔🎤📷🏈🏀⚾️📺B.W.
"On November 13 Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence." Happy Felix Unger day, 2020, everyone.
Lmbo
Keep in mind he remarried his ex-wife Gloria
Also Garry Marshall's birthday, iirc. I think that's why they picked that date.
And here I am on November 13, 2023 not knowing if I should feel happy or sad on this day. Sad because Felix was thrown out, or happy because it gave us an absolutely incredible show.😢😊
I love the way Felix is walking down the sidewalk, and the way Oscar exits the cab and throws the money to the driver. Both scenes are so totally NYC and portrayed as only native New Yorkers could do.
Neither Klugman nor Randall were native New Yorkers. Klugman was from South Philly; Randall, from Oklahoma ( don’t remember which town/city.) Tony Randall lived in New York later, though. He lived in a brownstone, “ indecently close” (i.e. about a ten-minute walk) from the Metropolitan Opera. He was an opera buff. 🎼
@@valerietaylor9615Randall was from Tulsa.
Both were Jewish, though, so maybe that's why they seemed New Yorkish.
Rest in peace, Jack and Tony. They are truly the best pair of all time (The Odd Couple).
Right up there with Bert and Ernie.
Other than the OGs: Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. They're even buried near each other
I grew up on this show. Late 70s to early 80s. Monday - Friday on WPIX 11 here in NYC.
The Odd Couple at 11pm, The Honeymooner's at 11:30pm, Star Trek at 12 midnight, and The Twilight Zone at 1am. After that almost all channels were off the air until 5 or 530am
Couldn't remember the WPIX but yes channel 11 watched from Pennsylvania
Classic show i started watching it in 1973 with my brother who loved the show, that was during my high school years beautiful show
A time when a person could watch a good program with class and clean humor. A healthy happy chuckle with great actors both Tony Randall and Jack Klugman God rest their souls for bringing their humor into the world to soften the blow of life's hardships.
yes sir!
Not quite: watching today you can see they added the beginning prologue to show that the 'odd couple' were just two friends dumped by their wives instead of two gay guys living with each other. Especially since one could assume that Felix's mild and meek nature is somehow effeminate.
KirkSH52 Classic sitcom. there hard to come by now. everybody wants to be politically correct. If this show was on today. Oscar will be a Trump guy and Felix would probably be a Hillary. can't say for sure because . Felix would probably not vote this election because of Hillary's corruption. but he definitely won't be a Trump guy.
Do you jerks have to make EVERYTHING political? Jeez, give it a rest.
Jim Davis right?
I'm 42 now. When we were kids we always thought it was so funny when that old lady hit Felix with her purse and the boy scout punched him too.
I'm 43.. I came just for the intro... I would always watch after school..this, then 8 is enough or Happy Days ?...or 3's company..I forget..or was t Laverne and Shirly (SQUIGMOND rules!) !!
Assault is unlawful.
So dam funny! Was lmao watching that part.
still funny! I'm 62. Only difference is now I actually Lol!
Lol
Absolute magic, used to watch with the family,no shocking story lines to get high ratings, timeless comedy and great acting.
The theme music is so peaceful & pleasant, love ❤️ it
Lydia I play it every now and then just because
SpongeBob SquarePants Imagine if they reboot it in that scenario. Lmao
There is a part at the end of the song "moanin' " by Art Blakey and the jazz messengers that always reminds me of this theme song, that part at the end of "moanin' " sounds similar to this theme
One of the best themes ever, written by jazz great Neal Hefti. (He also wrote the music for the Batman TV show.)
Ikr. Although I have never been to New York the opening always makes me think of being
One of the great intros of all time, of course theres the classic theme, but the facial expressions and actions stand out most, as well as the strory of the show being told in an extraordinary way...especially handing Felix the pan!
Hearing this song takes me back to Friday nights on ABC when I was in Junior High School.
szqsk8 I remember the peace and innocent I felt. This theme just like Mash's does that now.
Same here. Odd Couple and Brady Bunch on Friday, and Mary Tyler Moore on Saturday.
I wasn't around yet when this show aired, but I watched it a LOT when it was on Nick at Nite back when I was a little kid.
I loved this show. Sitcoms today can't come close to the good stuff ...
Got that right
Same here, I didn't think I would like it, but I gave it a chance. I'm a huge Odd Couple freak now. I've seen this, both movies, and the reboot of it.
One of my favorite shows in the 70s 😊
Despite the fact that I wasn't born until 16 years after it ended, it will ALWAYS be my favorite TV show. Jack Klugman may be my favorite actor.
Look for one of The Twilight Zone episodes starring Jack Klugman. TWZ was famous for early shows of stars before they became huge. Also William Schatner.
At around the 0:15 mark, the guy in the glasses who stops by Tony Randall was a passerby who actually thought he needed help. He didn't know something was being filmed. Everyone thought it was amazing (and extremely rare) that a New Yorker would help a stranger so they kept it in.
Oh crap, that's cool!
My friend suggested that years ago and I thought for sure he was a paid actor. How do you know he was just randomly looking at Felix? To me it looks like he's actually looking towards the camera for his cue, and then stopping and looking at Felix.
@@MrThermostatic In a media interview with Gary Marshall back in 2004, he specifically stated that all of those Manhattan scenes were unscripted and filmed while Jack & Tony walked around Manhattan, even the one with the boy scout helping the old lady across the street. Of course, they had to quickly approach each of the pedestrians and have them sign a waiver form to have those shots appear in the opening credits to each of the sitcom episodes.
So you actually believe that Tony Randall tried to help an old woman across the street, she smacks him with her pocketbook and then he's punched by a Boy Scout and that is not scripted?
@@MrThermostatic It's not about what I believe, it's what Garry Marshall stated how the episodes were shot. They were filming shots of Jack & Tony walking the streets of Manhattan and them intentionally interacting with other New Yorkers, which took many hours where many shots were taken. They then showed the ones that they thought were the most comical, and added music and narration to them. You can go order The Odd Couple series outtakes, where you can here the same explanation for yourself. If you still don't believe that, then you're calling the producer of the show, Garry Marshall, a liar, which of course is your prerogative, but certainly doesn't hold much weight as you just being a casual fan of the show.
I remember seeing this every Friday night on ABC during my teenage years....ahhhh, what wonderful memories of Friday night TV.
One of the great sitcoms of all time.. one of my 10 favorite all time shows..
God, this brings back memories!!! Would Someone PLEASE loan me their Time Machine?! I Promise to return it unharmed!
I would but Micheal J Fox stole and 10 minutes later returned my modified DeLorean DMC-12. in terrible condition and the dam thing cant go more then 87 mile per hour.
RayfieldA I'm coming!!!
Actually Marty McFly & Doc Brown are waiting for anyone at the JCPenney in their steam powered locomotive & rail car Fromm to 1888 with the destination of 1970. It's filling up fast! BTW, your cell phones will fade away as they didn't exist then.
We all want to do that
my parents liked this show, I just remember the theme song and this opening. It's like a time capsule, just hits you and suddenly you recall all kinds of stuff growing up. I love looking at New York City scenes in the 70's
When it was safe to turn on the television! Oh my, how I miss those days.
It's never been safe to turn on the television. Agitprop in 22 minute segments.
Agreed. Just yesterday I turned on my television and it exploded, killing me and my entire family
This was me and my late brother Marcus favorite show during the 70's. Great memories..
So very sorry for your loss.
Thank you ❤️
I keep hearing this theme song on commercials lately. Takes me back to watching The Odd Couple as a kid. Then later seeing Jack Klugman as Quincy M.E. Always loved the police officer dropping during the opening.
I used to watch this sitcom when I was a small child. This video brings back so many memories for me. I love Jack’s confidence!! Great actors. I think I should have grown up in that time era. Lol Awesome television show.
My favorite show as a child...brings back great memories.
so sad
54 years ago today, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence…..
This show is still in my TOP 10 T.v shows to watch.
Para mí también. Tiene algo de especial y no sé todavía que es.
The ODD COUPLE is my best & favorite show.I hail from Escanaba,Michigan. Now residing in Bradenton,Florida. Thanks a lot for posting.
I still watch the show. I love it.
I always loved this Odd Couple tv sitcom theme and I was a child back in the 70’s listening and watching the show with my mom.
Jack and Tony were perfect for their roles as Oscar and Felix. I'm watching reruns now and they still make me laugh!! (always had a crush on Oscar. hehe) :-) :) When Neil Simon gets it right, he really gets it right.
Actually Neil was only involved in the play and the movie. The geniuses that ran the show and helped make it iconic was Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson.
My Childhood… as a kid growing up, this show was absolutely everything. And Felix was and always will be my Heart ♥️
I would always feel so sorry for Felix, having to walk the streets of New York with all of his belongings.
Thanks for sharing this Masterpiece!!
Every year for the past 8 years or so on November 13th my Uncle texts me this into 🤣
It makes me lmao every single time! Thanks Unc you're the best I love you!
I think he also used the drapes to dry his hands and when Felix complained, he used Felix's shirt. While he was wearing it! Just the look on Tony Randall's face was priceless. You could not have cast this show any better!
Legendary Neil Hefti music! Love it! This theme and the Bob Newhart Show Theme.
Pat Williams wrote the theme for The Bob Newhart Show.
time capsule..
takes me back to when I was ten years old ..
actually remember the new shows on ABC ...
this was one ..
wow ...
fifty years plus ...
gone
I really miss this kind of tv
Loved this show when I was a kid in the 70s! Thank God for reruns on MeTV!
I'd just like to thank you so much for the video post RETROREBIRTH because this is one of my favorite television series intros in the whole wide world, one love. Yours truly, Brian Paschal.
I always liked the shot "deep down he knew she was right" when a non-extra sees the camera, sees Tony Randall and figures it out ("hey, aren't you...?")
Just bought the boxset. So enjoyable. Just brilliant. One of the greatest TV shows. Great actors and characters.
Narrator (William Woodson):
_On November 13, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence. That request came from his wife. Deep down, he knew she was right, but he also knew that someday he would return to her. With nowhere else to go, he appeared at the home of his [childhood] friend, Oscar Madison. Sometime (or several years) earlier, Madison's wife had thrown _*_him_*_ out, requesting that _*_he_*_ never return. Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?_
And in the bloodsoaked finale, the answer is 'no, and it killed fifteen other people as well.'
Another one of those shows that was on after the 10 O'clock News back when I was a little kid.
I have seen all 5 seasons! And I'm 14 years old, July 11 2013
And now?
Oh, I wish the show would come back. I loved watching it when I grew up. Now that we are under quarantine it would make a welcome distraction.
I remember watching the intro to this show, as a kid, and I would always laugh when the elderly lady hits Felix with her purse and then when the boy scout punches him.
Starring Tony Randall Starring Jack Klugman my kind of credits RIP the 2 of them
I love that Felix is carrying a Louis Vutton garment bag. Good for him.
the cigar bit that Futurama did a nod to was great. Fry looks at Bender after dropping the cigar, pokes it with the umbrella but then takes a puff and just drops it inside their apartment. what a classic scene
Great show--classically funny with great writing/acting. Acting is not acting--its REACTING--and both leads were fabulous at this.
When setting our wedding date, this day was one of our options so we picked it, partly because of the show. Been married to the best gal now for 48 years!
Those were the days ... ohhhh I loved these two !!!
This theme reminds me of my high school friends in band and jazz band. Happy theme makes me happy.
And so cute, watching the kids do The Maypole Dance.
Man does that take me back
RIP Jack and thanks for all the laughs over the years.
R.I.P. Neil Simon 8-26-18
I'm cooking dinner while watching this classic, reminiscing of that old antenna TV and great memories.
Jack and Tony were incredibly talented veteran actors. The entire supporting cast members were also top notch players. This TV theme song was one of the best. I was 13 in 1970. I made money mowing lawns. I purchased a miniature reel to reel tape recorder in part to record a lot of these great TV theme songs. Another outstanding TV theme song is from the show "Banacek". More excellent examples are the TV theme song from the show "The Fugitive". Peter Rugolo (music arranger) is responsible for that theme song as well as many others such as the show "Leave it to Beaver". Another memorable and iconic TV theme song is Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn".
One of my favs was Mannix!
I started watching around 1983. I was around 12. LOL.. Its that beginning tune that triggered flashbacks.
I luv this show when I was a kid. I knew the lines by heart.
I seem to remember this show being aired on Friday nights as it was one of the few TV shows I could stay up and watch. My parents always made me go to be really early during the week and I was only allowed to stay up till 10PM on Friday and Saturday nights.
I always preferred the television adaptation over the movie. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall were hilarious. Their timing was always spot on, and they thoroughly enjoyed their work. The show was clean, comical and uplifting, with talented actors and actresses, unlike today’ television. Thank you Jack and Tony for bringing a bit of humor to us, and may God rest your souls.
Song intro great child hood memory Friday night television miss those days.
And today is Odd Couple day! November 13! At least where I live!!!!
I just love that theme!! My favorite episode is the one where Felix and Oscar were arrested for ticket scalping!!
R.I.P Jack & Tony
I was born in 1973, after this tv show first aired. I remember my uncles watching this tv show and me watching it, along with other 70's sitcoms of the 70's decade and earlier. I thought they were both funny as a child. ^_^
Wow, what a good intro. That part where both of them gets their butt kicked side by side in perfect timing really endears you to both of them at once, showing both of them aren't one dimensional events.
Watched this when I was a kid and just recently rewatched it all on CBS all access and it is still just as funny now as it was then... now I am currently watching the reboot of the show that only went three seasons and it is pretty good too... love this show.
From my job, which is on 87th street, I'm only 3 blocks away from 1049 Park Ave 🙀🙀🙀
Omg I used to watch this show faithfully as a 5 year old😱😱😱
As a kid I was called Oscar Madison because of my locker in high school. I still love the name and will always be Oscar Madison.
1 of my favorite shows of that era
I loved that show!!!
Who else noticed Penny Marshall dancing on Tony Randalls right at 1:00!
Penny was a semi-regular on the show. She played Oscar's secretary, Myrna Turner.
After all these years I never noticed that.lol.
I always wondered about the guy at 0:15 who stops to look at Tony Randall sitting on his suitcase - was he just a passerby who thought 'That guy looks like Tony Randall'? Reminds me of the woman standing behind Mary Tyler Moore throwing her hat up in the air and clearly wondering 'What is this girl doing?' (I remember a guy once phoned in to the NPR quiz show 'Whad'Ya Know?' and claimed that was his mother.)
@ Elitist20 Same thing here whenever I watch MTM...lol....think I read somewhere that she was interviewed once and was asked why she was looking so grumpy...I think she replied along the lines of she was worried that Miss Richards would get run over....
At the one minute mark that is Jack Klugman getting out of a taxi going into a building
Sad news, R.I.P Jack Klugman. I really used to love watching The Odd Couple as a kid with my parents at home. Very happy times!
How I wish I could go back, I’m 66, and time flees from our grasp I was 12 in 1970,
And got tears in my eyes playing this great memory. I’m an only kid and my folks are gone. This is heartbreakingly sweet- Tom Struska
This was one of the shows that was really kool, as a kid felix and Oscar omg would have my family screaming , laffn, and it was decent show ..whenever we heard the theme from the odd couple from the television, we run and sit in front of the television. These were the times that was really nice, and television was television.
thanx for the theme with the narration. Been lookin' for this. God bless!
That was some theme song, complex yet easy listening and catchy. They paid lots of attention to those things back then. My other favorite theme songs were of the Mission Impossible and The Persuaders.
Nickos1b "Good Times", "The Jeffersons", "Sanford and Son", "All in the Family" and "The Flintstones" and this one were my faves from back in the day. "The Saint", "Naked City" and "I Dream of Jeanie" (both early and later versions) and "The Partridge Family" had good theme songs, too.
You Toober Yes, you are so right for the ones I know. Unfortunately half of those shows never aired in this part of the world. I also have a soft spot (and go all nostalgic) for the theme of "Happy Days" .
Nickos1b Ha! Oh yes, "Happy Days" = classic!! That one and "Laverne and Shirley". Yes, those were (and still are) GREAT theme songs!
Nickos1b and You Toober Those are all my favs too! I couldn't even pick a fav out of those but I'll also add Get Smart, The Andy Griffith Show, The Addams Family, The Munsters, The Golden Girls, 227, Frasier, Cheers, The Cosby Show seasons 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6-7, The Simpsons and Amen on the classic themes list for sure
Yes, I have always loved the theme song to this show. One of my favorites.
Okay, O M G....i was obsessed with this show as a kid, im an early 70's baby and i used to LOOVVEE Felix and Oscar, you couldnt tell me nothing...
my Mother told me that when we would go out, i used to think that every Caucasian Man was Felix and Oscar, and they would just laugh and be friendly with me....such a great time in TV...i miss those days and times. Thank you for posting this, Great memories
Very funny series ! I watched it on the BBC when I first lived allone .
RIP, Jack reminded me of my own dad. Loved him in Quincy!
I love this song! It takes me back.Especially the scene when they are in the park watching the little girl and doing the foot moventsI wonder if they had fun making these sitcoms as i do watching them
I made sure to post this to my Facebook page this morning and share it with two local radio stations too.
In 2014, Thomas Lennon was asked to remove himself from his place of occupancy. That request came from NBC. Deep down, he knew Sean Saves the World stunk, but he also knew that someday, he would find a better show for his incredible talents. With nowhere else to go, he appeared at the home of his frequent collaborator, Matthew Perry. Sometime earlier, networks pulled the plug on three of his television shows, requesting that he never return to television. Can two struggling men reboot a classic television sitcom, based off a beloved Neil Simon play, without driving the viewers crazy?
That's classic!
Lattrice Robinson Jr Indeed!
Warren Mitchell Now THAT's a sense of humour!
tryarunm Indeed there buddy!
+Warren Mitchell Nicely done, sir.
1970 was the shows first season. The Odd Couple, (titled onscreen Neil Simon's The Odd Couple), is an American sitcom television series broadcast from September 24, 1970, to March 7, 1975, on ABC.
Happy Felix Unger day,, hang in there brother. shell take u back 1 day!
BEST SITCOM EVER! I watched it as a kid. Now I'm in my 40s and my husband and I STILL use some of the lines in our everyday life. We even had two cats named Felix and Oscar and there WERE the odd couple!!
Frasier reminded me of the Odd Couple. Frazier and Niles were like Felix and their Dad was like Oscar.
I watched Cheers as a kid but frasier started airing when I was 1. I just started to watch it less than a year ago and it's become one of my favorite shows ever.
WOW your right about that and come to think of it does was 2/12 Men.
Just graduated from HS and it came out, loved the show!
