Background
"A Letter to Elise" was made public for the first time on MTV's Cure-"Unplugged" show in 1991 and had very different lyrics from the later version to be released as a 7".Letters to Felice by Kafka was a huge influence when Robert Smith wrote the lyrics of the track.
The B-side "The Big Hand" was planned as an A-side single early in 1993 but the idea was scrapped, largely due to Boris Williams not wanting the track to appear on the album but having no qualms about it appearing as a B-side (from KROQ radio interview with the band in 1992). "The Big Hand" is one of the few B-sides to be played live, although very rarely. It was first played in 1991, performed a few times during the Wish Tour in 1992, then revived at the Ultra Music Festival in 2007, and popped up, though rarely, during the band's 4Tour World Tour 2007-08.
A promo version of the song features yet another longer unreleased mix, with phaser on Robert Smith's voice.An instrumental version on cassette is also known to exist.
"A Letter to Elise" itself was revived by the band's new Smith/Gallup/Thompson/Cooper lineup in 2005 after being played sparingly, if ever, during the Smith/Gallup/Bamonte/Cooper/O'Donnell era. Like "The Big Hand", it was not played very often, and was usually a pleasant surprise to fans when it popped up in setlists.
"A Letter to Elise" has been covered by Aaron Sprinkle, for his Really Something EP, Blink-182, for the MTV Icon show for The Cure, and Sense Field, for their 2003 album Living Outside.

This was The Cure at their absolute peak - creatively, emotionally, lyrically and musically - Porl Thompson's layered guitar parts make this sound like an orchestral piece, the solo is beautiful and sad, and soars so high then falls back down. The song somehow conveys sadness, longing, hope, joy, love, loss, unrequited feelings, hopelessness all in one. I've been entranced by this song for 30 years now.

About ten years ago, I had to let her go just because I knew "I would never make her eyes catch fire the way they should." Whenever I listen to this song, I cant help myself from crying.

Neither of them can be together but they can't bare to be apart...the love went a long time ago.. neither of them are brave enough to move on with their lives.
So they go through the same routine day after day, trying to covince themselves that what they had was real but knowing deep down it never was.
"And the face i saw looked back the way i wanted to".. that split second....then it was gone... that moment of the way Elise used to always look at the narrator years ago was there and he saw it... then it was gone..
"I let the dream go, the promises broke, the make believe ran out"... there's millions of relationships, every day, across the world, in that line.
The narrator wrote a letter, to Elise... you can bet Elise wrote the same letter to him... neither will send their letter...

I don't think there's a more painful sentence put to song, its beautiful, it's tragic, it's so unbelievably real...
I used to listen to this song many times each day detoxing in rehab, yearning for the relationship my use killed.
I named my youngest daughter after this song, along with Fur Elise- my favourite song to play on the piano. I always loved the mysteriousness of the songs named for such a person, and how simple yet pretty the name is.
Elise has always been a mysterious, romantic and beautiful name to me. I recently found out that Elise means, "My God is abundance" or “God is satisfaction “.
