Thanks so much for the getting to this and the shout out!! I'm sure you'll get some comments about people's preferred live versions of this and how you should of done this one or that one, but I wanted you to get every little crazy detail from the album version just like I did when I was younger and this came out. I believe this is the first studio Phish song you've reacted to, and while they are soo soo good live, their albums are fire too. Come on people, let's get the views up!!! ✌😎
I love studio Phish!!! This version of split open and melt reminds me of frank zappa oddly.nI love picture of nectar too - this album and that one are my favorite full studio Phish albums. Last time I saw Phish was big cypress ny 2000. I miss them. Good recommendation 🤘🏼
@@amandatheyahoo411Before watching this last night, it’d been so long since I’d heard the studio version. Forgot how good it is. The crazy spoken vocals, with the odd effects on the end of each lyric, and then the drastic change & reverb’d out layering for “We breathe deep…” section. This was a fun revisiting of that song, and I enjoyed seeing Jamal’s reaction, as well.
Certain songs I definitely prefer the studio version, this being one of them! Great suggestion! My music app was kicking out studio versions yesterday (started with me picking studio Limb By Limb), it went in heavy on Rift- I had forgotten how perfect Maze, The Wedge, and My Friend, My Friend are.
Its truly a shame how passed over jam bands' albums are. Just with Phish - Ghost and Rift are phenomenal albums. Rift is one of my fav albums ever. The Dead has some good studio stuff too. But most fans will clown on you for not listening to a live version XD
Damn I just looked at the track list for Lawn Boy - Coil, Reba, My Sweet One, Split Open, Oh Kee Pa, Bathtub Gin, Antelope, Lawn Boy, Bouncing. I guarantee they all go as hard as the Split does here. Idk I just hate how dismissed the studio is sometimes. They aren't just cash grabs for record sells, they were the only way you could get this quality from them back then, cause sure as hell no cassette tape is going to sound like this!
@@terenceokane Everything from Junta to farmhouse are some of my favorite albums ever made. I even love undermind. Their newer stuff, while different, has its own appeal. Never understood the crowd who said Phish had bad songwriting, they're my favorite.
@@meganmccormick998One of the best rules that carried over from the Grateful Dead, to Phish. I live in Baltimore, and have been to several of the MPP shows. In the years since they started playing two night stands, if I can only see one of them, I always pick Sun. In the few instances that’s happened, I haven’t been disappointed. Oh, and nice use of emojis. I use these four. 🎸🎹🌵⭕️
Hell yeah, Jamal. Big Phish fan weighing in here. Was happy to see this pop up on your channel, and with your ever-expanding range of musical tastes, I knew you’d dig it. I’ve seen them 52 times, since my first show back in 1993. Every setlist is different, which is part of the allure. Ironically, this song was my introduction to them. Met a buddy in my dorm building, freshman year of college, in Salisbury, MD. One Saturday afternoon, a few of us took a day trip to Ocean City, MD, and I drove to the beach. One of my new friends (Todd, from Connecticut) handed me a cassette tape to play for our drive. It was Phish’s album Lawn Boy, which has Split Open & Melt. Same as yourself, that opening bass riff caught my ear, and then what really grabbed me was that “We breathe deep…” breakdown, with those beautiful harmonies. I was instantly hooked, and a few weeks later, Todd bought 4 tix for a show @ U of Delaware, and we drove up to see the show. That band was the catalyst in broadening my own musical tastes, and l listen to all sorts different stuff because of it, both new & old. It’s the lifeblood of my soul, and a big part of who I am. Keep up the great content, Jamal. It’s such a fun exercise, and the rewards are priceless. 🙂🎶
I love the jam bands but never got too much into Phish, a couple of cds, couple songs. I have a longtime friend that LOVES Phish. I'm gonna have to check this out some more. Thanks Jamel Jamal!!
I was just thinkin about you while finishing up my new phish documentary! Glad you liked this one! Split Open and Melt has always been one of my all time favorite live songs. It's basically like the 'horror movie feature' of their shows, and they like to use it as a vehicle to play some dark and otherworldly music after that song section.
I love this song. Like a lot of people are saying, when they play this song live, they really extend this one out and jam hard. The crowd gets to frenzy levels. It's an intense jam fo sho. One of my favorites. This studio version is good, but it's short and sweet. The live version is usually in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 minutes long and the ending is at peak jam level factor 11.
Life long Phish Phan here.. “ear candy” for sure! One of my fave jams of all time and watching your reaction was so phreakin phun! Shout out to Mike Gordon groovin that phunky bass! 💜⭕️ 5:42
I am one of the few fans of this band that has extensively listened to all of their studio albums, and I forgot how wild this studio version was in the horns and everything, but I go completely crazy at their shows when they play the song
Man, I haven't listened to Lawn Boy in decades, thanks for this reminder to do so! I usually stick to Junta, Rift, and Billy Breathes. And A Live One, but mostly shows.
Please please please react to Phish- The Lizards Clifford Ball Live, personally my favorite song and one of the absolute best live performance they ever did of this song. It's mind blowing how underrated the song is.
Jamal, from a scotsman, I'll direct you to the greatest song ever written. Nolan Porter - if I could only be sure! Trust me on this. The Hammond organ solo in the middle is outstanding.
Great reaction man! I dont know if you're interested but can you react to the music video called revelation by john rich, please? It is about book of revelations and its a fantastic song and its catchy. John rich did an interview with tucker carlson and he told tucker that god told him to write this song. He also said the guy with the fire is playing lucifer and the guy in white is playing michael the archangel.
ua-cam.com/video/XiNixnMFlDA/v-deo.htmlsi=JKB2NSP_dr_eTjyK Gotta check out a live version like the one above! It’s one of the quintessential phish songs that encapsulates everything that makes them great. Incredible musicianship, absurd lyrics, and a bit of fun and weirdness

I am a very open musician and in my 60s now. Also enjoy eclectic music. Some music is too discordant both musically and lyrically to make the connect for me. It is funky, and the drummer is a very skilled jazz drummer for sure. Beyond that.... hmmm.

Right on man. I am a life long Dead lover, but there will always be a special place for Phish.. One of the greatest live bands to ever play together.
Thanks for this! A long-time Phish fan, but haven't listened to this version in probably 25+ years. Very Zappa-esque.
So glad to see you with the music again! Love it!
Your name got flow.🪬🗽 Nice
I actually forgot how good the studio version of this song is.
Check out reba again if you haven't for a while. Still the best reba jam imo. Put on some headphones, close your eyes, it'll take you there.

Man, I haven't listened to the studio version in forever and I forgot how, with the horns, this is SUCH a Zappa composition!

This song live is on another level.

Top notch call on this one. The relisten had me remember how much the horns add to this album version.

I went last night. Two more amazing shows coming up at Alpine!
40 minute Simple, haven’t made it to the Alpine shows yet, still listening to the Mohegan Sun shows.

This is not his first Phish react. Jamal did several a couple of years ago.
