Bald Mountain / Big Levels Jeep Trail | Overlanding Virginia Part 1/3

- This will be a 3 part series where I go overlanding to three different offroad trails in Virginia.
This journey began on Tuesday morning, 9/12/23. I headed up north into Virginia towards Bald Mountain Jeep Trail. I went on this trip solo with just me and one of my dogs because it was during the week. The wife and I both work full time, but I had the 4 days off. So, I left the wife and kiddo at home 🤣.
I found a camp site that had cell service. I had cell service for almost the entire trail also! Hopefully, this video gives you a good idea of what to expect on the Bald Mountain Jeep trail in Virginia.

We have tons of people asking and we want to make sure they are like minded people who will respect the land and not trash it. Also, it takes us a lot of time and research sometimes to accurately locate a lot of these places. Name/channel/social media recognition!!

Nice video. Huntsville, TX - stock 23 Gladiator Rubicon. Running the Daniel Boone Byway in KY with friends in a few weeks.
Thanks! That’ll be cool! I need to get up that way at some point haha
Those 37s and 2” lift kit you got make this look easy
@@jeremyknappe1128 the lift and tires help not scrape the belly as much on the gladiator that’s for sure!!
This is my old party place. In the 80s I drove the whole thing in a 2wd dodge short bed..
@@brianhulse1665 hell ya!! Haha 😂
It is rougher now all the dirt has washed out . Now I use my 23 Bronco
@@brianhulse1665 awesome! I love that new Bronco
Man, I like your content. Looks like a lot of fun getting out there by yourself like that. exploring. Love it! Great job with showing the maps and such so newbies like me can follow. Lot of work though by yourself setting up the shots and all. I have almost the same set up but I'm in a Mojave 2 inch AEV lift and 37s 12.50. Gears at 5.13 though.
Thanks man!! I appreciate it. It makes the trail a lot longer when I film it 😂 hopping in and out of the jeep and setting the camera up all those times. Not to mention setting the camera up and trying to get it leveled and not really knowing if it’s going to record the Jeep in full view while you drive by. 😂 The Mojave looks cool with that different hood!
@@appalachhaun_adventures Yea, I can see how much work you put into your video, and I appreciate it, but don't forget to have fun brother.
@@samhouston5217 Hey I appreciate it man! It’s fun to me! I’m like, “oh man this terrain/obstacle looks cool” and jump out to film it haha. But sometimes it’s hard to get the true terrain to show up in the camera the way it looks in real life 🤷🏻♂️
@@appalachhaun_adventures Haha I get it. And it is near impossible to capture an uphill slope on camera. It could be wicked steep and the camera shot can look like, "meh," you know what I mean?
@@samhouston5217 yep! Haha. I’ll look back at some of my shots of hills and it kind flat on the video. Weird! I’ve tried pointing the camera right at the vehicle and also tried holding the camera level. 🤷🏻♂️
Lancaster Sc. I drive a 1999 jeep wj I’ve done hurricane creek so far in NC. Plan on doing a lot more this fall
There’s a few in north GA and around Chattanooga too!
Great trail. Thanks for sharing
Great video
Thanks man!
Thank you for sharing.
Nice trail! Enjoyed the ride, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the nice comments and for watching! Stay tuned for the next 2 videos! Flag Pole Knob has some cool obstacles and views!
@@appalachhaun_adventures looking forward to it!
I was up there yesterday, nice trail with some deep mudholes. Really tight trail. I'm based in WV . You need to come up to the New river gorge np. We have some epic trials up here.
Heck ya! I have only seen a little bit of stuff on trails over there. I need to check out more videos for that area! Thanks!!
anyone know if it’s okay to ride dirt bikes on this trail?
Gladiator Rubicon owner here. 3 inch lift on 37’s. New to running trails so I have a couple questions if you don’t mind:
1. Are you basically running 4H the entire time in a trail like this?
2. What do you air your tires down too?
3. You think a winch is a necessary recovery tool for a trail like this?
4. How does your dog do bouncing around in the truck?
5. Would you recommend this trail for a beginner going solo?
I throw it in 4L when it’s slow going and rocky. Always heard it’s easier on the engine, trans, and drivetrain. Sure you can do it in 2H or 4H, you’re going so slow anyway 🤷🏻♂️ may as well let the low gearing help out. I also disconnect the sway bar the whole time. I air down to like 15-17 psi. It helps absorb of the ricks and stuff and helps make it smoother than if you don’t air down any. The mud holes can get deep on this trail if it’s been raining within a few days so I would want a winch just in case. Dogs don’t mind bouncing around a little bit! They get used to it. I did it solo. Just check weather for a good week before. Don’t go if it’s been raining recently!
Those few decent obstacles I did on purpose and you can go around them but the mud holes you have to go through most all of them
Also. Go watch a few videos of it so you get an idea of different vehicles that have went through there
Tennessee Kingsport area drive a 2011 jeep wrangler Sahara unlimited
Forgot to ask, I drive a stock 2019 4-door wrangler unlimited, could I get by on that trail on stock or would you recommend bigger tires and a lift kit to go with them
That stair step obstacle looked like you could go around it to the left side. The one big rock I went up on and over, you can go around. I think some of those mud holes can get deep if it’s been raining recently...I’d worry about that if I went again and would check weather for a good week beforehand lol. I’ve only been on the trail once. I definitely would not do it without good tires. Really good All Terrain tires or Mud Terrain tires. Wouldn’t be good to get stuck if one of those mud holes were deep at the time you showed up. You may be able to search and find more videos of possibly stock vehicles doing it and see if anyone has.
@@appalachhaun_adventures thanks dude, appreciate your feedback. Happy trails!
You in 2H 4L ?
Once I’m on a trial that is slow going with all the rocks, terrain, and hills I go to 4L. It’s easier on the drivetrain and transmission with that gearing
These trails are in my back yard. What gears are you running?
Just the stock 4.10 that come with the Rubicon trim level. So far, with the 37’s on there, I don’t feel that I need to regear. It drives basically the exact same feel as with 33’s!
Check out Potts Mountain next time you are in VA. That’s a fun trail and definitely challenging.
@@Hkh19d ya I need to hit that trail up sometime. It’s hard to do trails that far away from my house when all I have is the weekend. It usually takes a whole day to just drive 1.5 - 2 hrs away to do a trail, get out and film it all, then drive back home. So if it’s more like a 4-5 hr drive, I’ll need to camp too. Plus we have dogs that would have to go with us too hahaha. Trying to figure it all out as we go!
