Behind the scenes with the women shaking up Australian politics | Four Corners

  • There's a new force in Australian politics: women who defied the odds and won seats historically taken for granted by the major parties.
They now make up parliament’s largest crossbench since WWII.
Four Corners goes behind the scenes for a rare, candid look at their first weeks in office, following two MPs and one senator as they find their feet in Canberra.
But as the reality of life in government sinks in, can they maintain their promise of change?
    Or will politics change them?

From a 40 year old Aussie male I just want to wish these awesome women luck in everything they do. It saddens me that Labor is doing this. What an incredible opportunity Albanese has to truly change the political landscape in this country, and he does this dirty little trick. We need MORE independents who actually care about the community they seek to represent. Not just the (insert colour) party and it's power.

Jesus Christ they should just use the tax payer funded resources they have at parliament like legal aids, tax/financial law aids, and legislative Liberians and bill readers & deliverers that ANYONE elected in parliament can use! Or better yet OUT OF THEIR OWN RICH POCKETS! Government/opposition back benchers, a lot of them don't even have 1 tax paid office staffer? Why do the cross benchers all of a sudden think they're entitled for more hands that are only use for either their coffee or formal dress deliveries? Honestly you shouldn't be putting your trust in those people whose first actual critique of the new government relates to policy that causes a lose of some comfort AT BEST

Early days for the independent movement, I think we will eventually see a much larger cross-bench within the next 2 elections that will hold balance of power. Both major parties are out of touch and only care about preserving the 2-party system.

I would be apprehensive about learning the established norms simply because these leaders are “rookies.” The entire reason why you entered the political realm is to CHANGE the norms. Too many people get involved in politics with a drive to truly represent the people. However, in time, they simply resemble the same political population by adhering to old patterns accepted as a political climate, or a ‘this is how it’s done’ standard. Why? Because the folks in politics enter into the political fraternity and the standards NEVER change. Stay the course. Disrupt the norms. And speak and expose actions in the non-typical realms. Set new standards.

Monique Ryan showed good and mature self-reflection after meeting with the PM. Strong sign of good character and a fine political representative.
All the Teals and Independents need to now come clean and stop whinging about the staffing issue which is that they will get what every other member gets-whether Labor, Lib, Nat, Green, PHON, JLG, Teal or Independent.
So either share your resources, or use the significant skills and processes of the Parliamentary Library, and realise that Morrison's bribe of four staffers to Independents to get his legislation through the Senate is now over-just like his political career.

  • @carolleenkelmann4751

The Independents (women) should all join forces and set up an outsourcing/sharing Staff complementary workforce calling for an army of Volunteers. How about that. Has Albanese cut his own Staffing back? Girls, get to it. Politics is a dirty business, especially when it comes to Male/Female shows of who really is in Power. Please don't get too woke and don't lose heart. Go look at the English BBC series "Yes, Minister". and "Yes, Prime Minister." Might help to refresh your memories.

EVERY member of parliament gets the same allocation of taxpayer-funded staff, whether it is Lab, Lib, Hanson or the Greens.
Late last year, Scotty offered the Indeoendents in the Senate a bribe of THREE extra staff (paid by the taxpayer), so the independents had FOUR staffers, and every other member and senator had ONE.
Now, Scotty is not PM anymore, and so his bribe is no longer on the table. The parliamentary library is able to give all members and senators the information they need to do their work. The Teals could share some of their resources, as they do have much common ground.
