The shrubs on the right side do look like they are sitting on higher ground. I agree with your suggestions.

Thanks for your comments Nancy. Let's see how they get on in the following year after some action has been taken

@@saslandscapes Another idea I have that would be aided by your suggestions is that it looks like the shrubs are competing with the grass that are around them. So weeding out the grasses along the drip lines of the shrubs would be good so that the roots of your wanted plants are getting the nutrients from the soil instead of having the grass compete for the nutrients.

@@nancywells5626 Yes, that's a good additional idea for them to work on and give those plants every chance.

Can i add, i planted approx 480 of these at 60cm around my 230m garden boundaries in Feb 2021, generally now they are140-150cm, although those under tree canopy are nearer 170/180cm (nutrients from tree roots aiding growth?) but one row in full sun have only grown to 90cm. I think alot depends on sun/soil/drainage etc.

Thank you for your comment Ace. The tree canopy does seem to be creating a microclimate for you which appears to be favoring your Griselinia. The intention of these plants is usually to form a hedge and not to grow to their full glory so eventually, everything should catch up and look uniform.

    Hi SAS,
I planted a load of griselania 6 months ago, but slowly they are dying off, leaves falling off, they look like theyve been in a fire, look all burnt.
Not sure if my drainage is the problem, but what causes the plant to look burnt.
    Thank you

      Hi Barry,
Thank you for your comment and for reaching out to us about your concerns as regards the Griselinia.
There can be several reasons for this to occur with Griselinia, let's go through them one by one and you can see which one(s) are most likely for you and your unique
Sunburn: Griselinia hedging prefers partial shade or full sun with protection from intense afternoon sun, especially when young. Excessive exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during hot and dry periods, can cause the leaves to become scorched and appear burnt.
Drought Stress: Griselinia hedging requires regular watering, especially during dry periods or when newly planted. Insufficient watering or prolonged drought conditions can lead to leaf discoloration and a burnt appearance.
Frost Damage: Griselinia is generally hardy, but severe frost or freezing temperatures can damage the leaves and cause them to turn brown or appear burnt. This is more likely to occur in regions with colder climates or during unusually cold spells.
Salt Spray: Griselinia is sensitive to salt and can show signs of burning if exposed to salt spray from coastal winds or if planted near roads where de-icing salts are used. The salt can accumulate on the leaves, causing them to look burnt or discolored.
Chemical Damage: Exposure to herbicides, pesticides, or other chemicals can cause leaf damage and a burnt appearance. Be cautious when using any chemicals near Griselinia hedging and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
Nutrient Deficiency: Inadequate soil nutrition, particularly deficiencies in essential nutrients like nitrogen, can lead to stress in the plant and result in leaf discoloration, including a burnt appearance.
Disease or Pest Infestation: Certain diseases, such as fungal infections or pest infestations like aphids or spider mites, can cause leaf damage and browning, which may resemble a burnt appearance.
I hope one or more of these makes sense to why you are experiencing this particular issue.

Are these suitable for clay soils and coastal land?

hi, thank you for your question. Griselinia can grow well on coastal land. While it prefers well draining soils, Griselinia can tolerate clay soils. I hope this helps you.

    Hello
How have the shrubs been doing one year later?

They are getting better, just struggled with that initial phase of getting established.
