    What stands out to me among all the other videos is that you are the calmest youtube person. Which is a good change of pace compared to the hyperactive speakers you could listen to on youtube.

    While I was watching the video these considerations came to mind in retrospect. Which internship created meaningful skill sets to help you achieve your next milestone. Which internship helped you create meaningful relationships such as finding a mentor that can guide you along your career path. Which internship created an environment where it was easy for you to feel passionate about your work and that it is meaningful. I know I mentioned the word “meaningful” several times. It hard to predict what would be meaningful and rewarding in a non-monetary way without experiencing it. I guess sometimes all you have is to just jump in and find the meaningful as you experience it.

      Thank you, again, for pointing something out that I had actually not thought about! I've gained so much from each of my internships, and I've found them all to be rewarding in different ways, but I've never actually thought about which internship I found the most 'meaningful' until now. And I do have an answer, but I'm not sure it would be interesting to many, because it's not one of these cool/hip tech companies. And it wasn't necessarily the internship itself that I found meaningful - as you pointed out with the relationships and mentorships, it was actually my mentor and teammates and the amount they taught me that made that internship the most meaningful to me.

    Qualcomm housing is a better idea but being a possible fulltime employee at Google is what makes it better. Qualcomm layoffs are a problem since SoC efficiencies keep improving less need for employee redundancies

    Thanks for sharing your experience!
    I'm a PhD student in the middle of internship application processes, and trying to find information about thesis interviews but there is hardly anything. Since you've been through it multiple times, it would be super valuable if you could talk about this too. I'm mostly interested in what to focus on when preparing for the thesis interview. Is it better to read up on the broader field of my research, maybe go deeper in my specific topic, or focus on demonstrating what I have already done during my phd? Is it important what has been published already, or what I'm working on right now? What if I want to explore something different in the internship than my "official" phd field of study? I happen to be a software engineer, but I think these questions are general enough for any STEM phd. Thanks! :)

      Interesting questions. I actually never did a thesis interview for internship interviews. I have had interviews where they wanted to discuss my background and projects I've done, but I would hardly call those "thesis interviews". I did one interview where the interviewer asked me to send him a paper I had written and he wanted to treat the interview like a mini "defense" of the paper. But the only interviews I've done where I've had to delve into my dissertation were when I was interviewing for full-time positions.
      I'd say it would be easier to get an internship in a field in which you've published papers and are currently doing research, but you'll likely be able to get opportunities in adjacent fields if you're interested. Regarding whether to "read up on the broader field of your research, go deeper in your specific topic, or focus on demonstrating what you have already done during your phd", I'd say it really depends on the position you're interviewing for. If the role is very closely related to your research, definitely emphasize your expertise (this should be easy, considering you're the expert on your own thesis). If the position only broadly related to your research, you should be able to speak on your knowledge in the broader field, so it would be good to review more general subject matter.
      I don't think you should be deterred in exploring positions different from your "official" field of study. In fact, it might be easiest to be open minded, because the chance you'll find a position directly related to your research are slim. I mostly did internships only slightly related to my field of research, because it was so difficult to find opportunities in my exact area.
      I apologize for such a long-winded answer. The TLDR of it is: go for opportunities that interest you, and the preparation required for each interview depends on the specific role and what the recruiters/hiring managers reveal. Feel free to shoot me an email if you'd like to discuss more or if anything I said is unclear. Hope that helps!
      Btw, I will be releasing a video on (more general) interviews soon :)

      Hi Jan, thanks for the detailed response!
      I had the thesis interview yesterday and it was focused on one of my papers and my specific research topic. After your answer I was kinda expecting this (instead of broad discussions about the whole field), so thanks for the advice! It made me go through my papers before the call and it definitely helped smoothing the conversation since the paper was in my short term memory :)
      Thanks again, great that someone is showing the PhD perspective to these highly sought-after companies and internships!

    For me personally, Qualcomm is my number one place I hope I to work for because I'm interested in Wireless R&D. However, although I have a very good offer from NI in that same space for an internship (for the summer in-between my Bachelor's and Master's), I haven't gotten any emails from Qualcomm yet. Should I email Qualcomm and try to get interviewed earlier so that I can consider both options if Qualcomm considers me, or should I just take the NI offer? If I do want to email Qualcomm and try to get considered earlier, who would I email? I don't really know who the hiring managers are or what their emails are.

      Just FYI, there are many companies equal or better than Qualcomm for wireless R&D. Especially considering the current status of Qualcomm's relationship with a certain larger company in that space. Something to keep in mind, you have a lot of options

    Hello your channel is great is contains extremely helpful information .
    I recently was offered a phd program. Im in the finish line of my undergraduate EE program but my goal is to work in the big tech companies . It really calls my attention to do the phd or graduate program but my university it doesn’t have a big prestige do you think is a good option to enter the phd program or look for other school with a higher ranking . Personally I think academically is the same but the ranking of the school I don’t know if is it important when your goal is to work for google level companies.
    Thanks happy holidays!!

    • @janpancake
      @janpancake  3 роки тому +2

      Short answer: I don't think the ranking of the school matters that much.
      Long answer: However, I can't say the school name doesn't help. Your experience and everything else on your resume is of course more important, but the name of the school *may* make some sort of difference. There are other factors that might make more of an impact though - for instance, have others at your school gone on to work at some of these larger tech companies? That might give you some indication of the opportunities you'll have if you go to that school. Additionally, do the larger tech companies fund projects/grad students at that school? If you could potentially work with industry engineers from those larger tech companies, then I think that would definitely make it easier to get your foot in the door.
      Just to give an example, in my lab, there were students working on projects with Facebook, Google, and Netflix. They all were able to get internships with the groups that were funding them. Once you have an internship, if you're thinking of getting rolled over to full-time, you may not need to go through parts or any of the full-time interview process. The opportunities provided by a school or program will make a bigger impact than the school name itself.
      Hope that helps!

    Hey! Really love your content!
    I would like to know what Qualcomm and Google look for in an electrical engineer. in the sense that what courses or specializations are given more priority when hiring an electrical engineer.

    • @janpancake
      @janpancake  3 роки тому +3

      It really depends on the position/group/department you're interviewing for. Your coursework should demonstrate you have at least taken the fundamental courses in your area. I could try to give specifics if you have a particular role in mind.

      @@janpancake I plan to pursue my masters in electrical engineering and I would chose either embedded systems or power electronics(I love both of them). I was planning on making a table deciding which would be better for my future. (Any help on deciding the area also would be appreciated).

    • @janpancake
      @janpancake  3 роки тому +3

      @@sreekarvattipalli9925 Ah, I don't know many people in the power electronics space, but I know quite a few embedded engineers. Since I didn't go down either of those tracks, I can't tell you what the best classes are to have on your resume. I also can't say which field would be best (sorry, I'm no help!), but my professional opinion is that embedded engineers are quite versatile - and it seems there's always a demand for good ones.

    Hi there. Were both internships about software development? I thought that a phd in electrical engineering would work more with the hardware

    • @janpancake
      @janpancake  3 роки тому +1

      The Google internship was in software, yes. The Qualcomm internship was more on the systems/research side. An internship in EE can be in anything! Just depends on your track/interests/skills

    Where was the Qualcomm free housing? Was it near the office and is it like a studio apt? I got an offer from them on the QCT team in San Diego and was curious

      Congratulations on your offer! My year (2017) they put interns all over the place, but I was in Staybridge, an extended-stay hotel down the road from Qualcomm. A handful of interns were in the Residence Inn near the Qualcomm campus, but I think most of the interns were in furnished apartments around UCSD.
