Starship Launching in 9 Days!? But the Wet Dress Rehearsal Needs Repeating...

  • It’s likely the Starship's Flight 4 Wet Dress Rehearsal we saw last week wasn’t a full success, as SpaceX appear to be readying for another one ahead of Flight 4’s Launch. We also saw The first of six dedicated launches of SpaceX’s Starshield satellites for the National Reconnaissance Office, 46 more Starlink satellites made it to orbit, Electron conducted the first of two launches for NASA's PREFIRE mission, and the UK got one major step closer towards its first vertical rocket launch thanks to Germany's Rocket Factory Augsburg, there was a massive failure during a test of a Starship Raptor engine, and during a launch attempt from North Korea! All of this and so much more, enjoy!

    I was thinking about an idea for a KSP video - playing the game in real time with an eye tracker so you can see what I am actually looking at when flying rockets. I'm guessing I basically never look at the "game screen" and purely look at the navball and KER. Would that be something you'd be interested in seeing?

      It would be interesting, but I’d find it more interesting if you got several different KSP UA-camrs to do the same thing, then compared. Maybe even a novice who’s not played the game much.

    We know that when Musk says "3 to 4 weeks" that usually turns out to be 3 to 4 months, so if he says "10 days", we should expect it to be about a month.
    For the booster, I believe that it was a selling point for 33 engines that if one for some reason shuts down the other on can take it's role. They had 6 engines failed to ignite, but there was 20 more in reserve. Why weren't they used instead? And I don't believe it was filter blockage that was the reason for failure. If there was the same problem in flight 2 and they took measures to solve it, then that problem repeated, they were probably looking in the wrong place. It looks as someone has an idee fixe about the reason of failures, but I don't want to accuse anybody over appearances. My candidate would be pipes or fittings bursting under acceleration - blockades with fuel would lead to engine stop working, not to an explosion. Anyway, no piece of equipment was retrieved for analysis, so all we have are conclusions based on telemetry.
    And that raptor engine test explosion - if it was intentional, I believe SpaceX would hurry to tell us so. The silence on that part points the other way.

    I wonder why they want to stage separate the hot stage ring... I mean it cant be a weight issue.. so what is it?

    • @lazarus2691
      @lazarus2691 3 місяці тому +1

      The hot stage ring was never meant to be part of the booster (IFT-1 didn't have it after all), it was a retrofit.
      The hot stage ring is actually quite heavy, which makes the booster top heavy, and may also mess with the aerodynamics.
      In short, the booster is probably unstable when landing with the hot stage ring.
      The V2 boosters appear to have a properly integrated hot stage section, so it should no longer be an issue.

    • @Ph33NIXx
      @Ph33NIXx 3 місяці тому

      @@lazarus2691 Ah - so that could have been the cause of the rapid maneuvering from the grid fins?
      My reasoning was that - since the booster has the power to push Starship out into space, it has enough power to handle the weight of the hot stage ring.
      Not considering that the super heavy was designed to land without it.
      But it makes sense. thank you for taking your time to explain x)

  • @Harry-ff4vx
    @Harry-ff4vx 3 місяці тому +1

    Does it bother anyone else that the Saturn V with half the amount of first stage thrust as the star ship could put 140 tons of payload into orbit yet the first gen star ships are being down rated from 100 tons capacity to 50 tons and have barley been reaching sub orbital trajectories EMPTY

    • @lazarus2691
      @lazarus2691 3 місяці тому

      The Space Shuttle had about 90% of Saturn V's thrust, yet only had about 25 tons of payload (and the early flights with the standard weight tank could only do about 15 tons). Starship managing twice as much with about double the thrust is pretty par for the course. The simple fact is that making a rocket reusable comes with a significant performance penalty.
      And although Starship didn't successfully land on this test flight, it still paid the mass penalty in terms of fuel reserved for landing, the heat shield, fins, etc.
      However, it's worth noting that Starship can fly in an expendable configuration, in which case the current performance is around
